hello to all of YOO. This is a final plansz invite to the ******************GRAND NYC SUMMER PICNIC**************************** which will take place this Sunday from 3pm on.... Go to the North end of Sheep's Meadow in Central Park. Take the 1, 2, 3, 9 to Broadway/72nd, or the B or C to 72nd, and get out, walk east into the park. Veer on the path, RIGHT, towards Sheep's Meadow. ANyone will know where Sheep's Meadow is--it's a big field which will have lots of people. The picnic will be near the north fence, just down from the bathrooms. (There's only one set of bathrooms). There will be some kind of a SINISTER sign and Milla in a yellow T-shirt. Please bring: drinks, food to share, tapes, toys, games, walkmen/speakers, a pony, eggnog, force field, eggnog, balloon, flowers. Bring friends, Sinister or not. OKay! This is my first time posting to Sinister, although I have been on the list (digest form for anybody who's interested) for about two months. I finally felt like being brave and introducing myself...so here I am. My name is Elisabeth. I'm 16 and I live in California (that would be in the United States for those of you who don't know) Is this sounding too much like a singles ad? "I enjoy candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach..."heehee :) Hmmm. That's all I have to say really. I enjoy reading what all of you lovely people have to write to eachother, but I have to admit that you can be sort of intimidating to a person like me. Half of the time I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm still very entertained by what goes on. I would really, really love to be accepted. I don't really fear that you won't accept me, but I am new, and many of you seem to have some special friendships going on, so I feel a bit like an intruder. I hope I haven't scared you yet. Sinister: BBC sessions and such

Hey kids, I just got my Tigermilk today. WHEE!!!!! I have to say that "She's Losing It" could be my new theme song. And much thanks to Beth, who provided the coolest (and weirdest) tape cover I've ever seen. (Too bad she didn't sign up for the tape list!) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the names of the last 4 songs from the BBC sessions, since they aren't listed on my tape, and they are new. I wrote down some lyrics to help out anyone who knows what they are. The first one I think is "Modern Rock Song" - there's some reference to Dostoyevsky and Mark Twain in the same line. The second one should be called "Pocketbook Angel" but is probably not. Lyrics include "I've seen her write it all down..." Is this "A summer Wasting?" The third one has the lyric: "London has let me down again" as the first and last line. My guess is "Spaceboy Dream", but he says "dream" in a lot of songs, doesn't he? The fourth one says, "Hurley's having dreams/ He kicks and then he screams..." It also has the wonderful lyric about handstands being bad for pregnant women, which someone mentioned on the list before. Anyway, sorry I had to ask - and I know someone probably asked before - but I'm going crazy, so please help! -Erin P.S. For the Nick Drake inclined: my vote is for "Bryter Layter". It's full of strings and semi-happy music, if there is such a thing for Nick Drake! I'm just curious which OJ single you bought and how much it cost you. I have most of them from when I was in school. My friend is going to London next month and is willing to look for 7" and CD's for me (she will be shopping for herself too) and I was wondering how available stuff from 15-17 yrs ago is. I don't want to waste her time + effort. Is the V-Twin single good? Is there only one out? I saw OJ play at a place called the Venue in London and the thing I remember about it is how this girl had a box of fruit pastilles and passed them around to everyone (people DID NOT act so friendly in New York clubs at the time!) Bill Forsyth is a genius, if you ever see Comfort & Joy it's my Uncle Tommy's drumming in the opening bit....he was in the Italian ice cream mafioso guy's backing band for real for quite a few years. Four Films About Love That End Happily, and How They Relate to Belle and Sebastian, or I Am Bored At Work. A Matter of Life and Death The Pickpocket Trouble in Paradise It Happened One Night .and they relate to B&S becauseif a love film is to end happily, it risks being so intensely predictable that it loses your interest, indeed becomes pointless. That's why so many films with happy endings are ao gruelling. You can see it coming a mile off. The same is true of the films above, and doubtless lots of the other films mentioned on this topic. BUT the mark of a truly great film is that you and I can see and feel the happy ending from the first frame.and not care, because the story is told so beautifully, because it is a delight to watch these characters in an inevitable dance. And the same is true of perfect music, in my book. I know it is going to deliver the goods, pander to my peccadilloes, indulge my weaknesses, and resolve in the manner that I wish it would. B & S are a good story well told. It barely matters that there are no new stories under the sun. Or chords, or tunes, or new ways to do handclaps. The other thing about a great film about love is that even as it moves towards its inevitable end, it dances around many pitfalls, avoiding becoming saccharine or dull by being witty, or clever, or a little mean. Again, like Belle and Sebastian and how they waltz around, tempting tweeness but never quite surrendering. Of course I may be babbling, and the above may be naught but Friday afternoon horseshit. My other justification for continuing this one-way street of a topic, which is really just an excuse for everyone to list their favourite films - and there is nothing wrong with that if you ask me - is that B & S are incredibly cinematic. I'm sure I'm not the first one to point that out. Does anyone fancy a little international cultural multi-coloured swapshop? I'll swap you a video rental idea for one of yours. It's quicker than making a tape and there is no postage. Old coots on the list - anyone around in the late 80's remember "Far Out and Fishy" fanzine? More specifically, whatever happened to Chris Fish of FOAF fame, late of Oxford? Any takers? Thank you for enlivening the stolen moments of the work day. Unfortunately I don't remember Mike's Ozzy cut, but what I do remember about The Alarm is the insistence of their bass player (?) on wearing a Wales football shirt for concerts. Not just any Wales shirt, the one from the glory days of the Home International Tournament, with snazzy stripes that kind of made the shape of the letter "Y", as a tribute to Terry Yorath, I suppose. And the material was really good, not like nowadays, I'm bloody sick of shiny material, it makes me want to throw up. He had a kind of Pete Burns haircut. I had golf lessons once, but I didn't stick at it for long. I now live in the famous Mr Olazabal's home village, his father was greenkeeper. There's a little crazy golf course just down the road, it seems to be where the local ruffians hang out though, drinking beer and revving their mopeds. I'm sure if I went along they'd think I was an undercover policeman. To borrow another phrase ... now I've thoroughly bored the arse off you I'll go.
