Well, like it or not, Belle and Sebastian are headed for the big time. Why, because they are in this week's issue of People magazine!!! For those of you who don't know, People magazine is, hmm how to sum it up? well, Satan's own entertainment weekly sounds about right. A sycophantic celebrity rag that normally reports on critical news such as what Cameron Diaz wore last week, the latest issue has a review of "TBWTAS". I'm not going to bother transcribing it, because it just says what most of the others do - "good lyrics, beautiful songs touching melodies blah blah" and anyway you wouldn't read it if I did. But they did mention that "sometimes the band gets a little too snide for its own good" specifically targeting "Seymour Stein" which is "about skipping a meeting with a record company exec" and then at the end of the article they say something about the "funny name" of the band. Maybe it's just me, but it seems "seymour stein" gets misinterpreted a lot, cos when i listen to it I feel sorry for the guy... there he's stuck washing dishes and bemoaning the loss of his lil chiquita while the rest of the band gets wined and dined down the road... anyway if you're interested go check out People. Sinister: Guilty as charged

Dear lovely fellow passifistic fellow listees, I sent that last mail before reading what had been sent to me, and as a result I now feel guilty about argueing on the list, as I have been doing quite a bit lately. I love the list as much as the next cardie wearing saddo. Sorry I promoise to love it more, and argue less. While people seem to be talking about what outsiders semm to stereotype B&S as I thought I'd say that all of my mates reckon that the rest of you fans are all students, with that certain hippyness that students have. And they call the band Bell End Sebastian to annoy me. There is an picture of an arab strap in Melody Maker this week, in the photo of the band on the singles page, one is holding up the SOTW and the other is holding an arab strap. And how emmense does the Boat Tour sound. I want to stay on it as a cruise, and listen to each gig, and maybe they could play a different set each evening. Oh what a thought. So Fluffy baby, Hi ya it is Jake here, known to you as Kenny, who alledgedly smells of poo. You say that my sarcasm is , and I quote, "about as funny and cutting edge as leprosy". Well i think that there is a case of double standards here, seeing as darling Katrina decided that she would be sarcastic in one mailing not too long ago about track 5 on 369, yeah go on LOOK IT UP IN THE ARCHIVES. And did you decide to tell her she smelt of poo? Like wee you did. And as for being cutting edge I've had even more people say to me "oh my god they've killed Kenny" than I had lists of bands sent to me on this list. So that makes you about as cutting edge as an Austin Allegro. And no, I wasn't have a dig at Honey in his absence, I was doing him a favour by reminding people to "LITA" so the list doesn't get bombarded with questions that have been asked a million times already. I would have sent this privately but i thought that I would defend myself. And Belle and Sebby, like it or not, would not exist without good old kick ass rock + soul. Well, maybe they would, but Stevie would be playing a Lute, or something. And Chris would legally be required to change his name to Gawain, whilst the girls would play crumhorns, and the Stuarts would take turns to Morris dance. Richard, in case you're wondering, would be replaced by a dribbling, one eyed dwarf called Snuffhammer, who drinks real ale, and re-enacts the black death every saturday afternoon, on wimbledon common. On his own. Observant readers among you will notice my self aggrandising subject line. Well, it's not, actually I was going to give you all a red hot tip (ouch!). 'It's Getting Funky Round Here' is an knee tremblingly great track that I've had boogying through my head for a couple of weeks now, and I thought I'd tell you all to go and find it. Except I can't remember who performed it. So I can't. It's on a rather tasty compilation called Stax o' soul (classy title), and the whole thing's pretty fantastic, so if that kind of thing floats your boat (or as the cool set are saying, 'butters your muffin'-thanks whoever that was:-) ) go seek and find. Actually, I think it should be compulsory listening for hipsters- anyone who can deny the presence of any element of S!O!U!L! in B&S should have their head examined. But I didn't, and I apologise for any offence or consternation I may have caused. The reason I don't like the expression "black music" is because I once watched a documentary about Spanish group Greta y los Garbos and they said that their main influence was black music. At that moment, something in my brain slipped its moorings and is yet to return to safe harbour, if that is the correct nautical expression. I certainly didn't wish to accuse anyone of racism, or non-racism for that matter. Of course, the term "race war" was used as a joke, like with "class war" before. "Race tiff" would be more appropriate, but even that's a bit strong. I'm sorry boys and girls. You know that footballer, Reiziger? He looks like a monkey who's just come down from the trees. There's a section of copyright law which deals with "fair use" - i.e. not copying more than 5% of a book, etc. It's generally accepted now that copies made as backups are covered by the fair use clause - i.e. if you own the original, and are only using your copy as a backup, or to prevent further damage to the original, you are legally OK. I use this fact all the time to make compilation CDs of tracks that I already own on other CDs. Similarly I intend to record all my old 7" singles onto CD to prevent further wear and tear to them. On another note, bands I like - nah, can't be bothered. I was pleased to see Fairport Convention getting a mention one someone's list, and a couple of mentions for the Violent Femmes. Anyone who hasn't heard the Femmes eponymous first album should definitely do so. Very acoustic, but with a great raw edge. Finally, and exceptionally late due to information overload, many thanks to those who have offered to find out some more about Pez body parts for me. I wait with baited baity things for any information you can supply. As for those that criticised my patronage of Woolies to buy Pez, I should point out that my local independent Pez supplier went under when Thornton's opened. It's a choice between new, Woolies sold digital Pez, or no Pez at all. If anyone has any old analogue Pez that they need duplicated in digital form, let me know. I'll do you a copy provided you promise to only use it for your own enjoyment, and that you will buy the official digital re-release of the analogue Pez when it is re-released next year. I don't want to be the source of a Pez-legging ring that diverts money away from the independent Pez suppliers.
