Firstly there was evidence that "Watchdog" have been eavesdropping on Sinister since I complained to them about CDZone (and they never invited me on the telly either). Not only did they have an article about the reduced number of tracks now allowed on a single (which was the subject of protracted discussions here a while ago), but the same presenter then embarked on a separate article on the subject of golfing attire. Coincidence? I think not. Robbie then shimmied his way onto Top of the Pops in blank underpants and a gold see-through dress. This did not make me sigh, but did make me think about going to see him at Wembley next February where he will be supported by our old favourites The Divine Comedy, are you up for that one Rod? Did anyone else catch any of the Bee-Gees special on Saturday? Hairy and overrated Antipodean chancers, or glorious Gods of funky seventies pop? I remain undecided. Who said that it's not really Isaac Hayes on South Park? Isn't that a bit like telling children that there is no Santa? Of course it's Isaac Hayes. I seem to remember going to Hastings once and finding a decent pub there, so it can't be that bad. Don't think I've ever been to Bognor though, so I couldn't comment. Broadstairs on the Kent coast is my favourite seaside town, because it has been constructed specifically for pub crawls where you end up unconscious on the beach. A beach is far better than a flower bed. As long as the tide doesn't come in of course. Sinister: Wandering Days

I was working in Glasgow last week, and I was board on the train, so I wrote a little story. I haven't written anything for years, and I'm not very good at it, yet I've plucked up enough courage to send it to the list. I hope you like it, please send any comments. For any of our American listees - Please don't be offended. Oh, and it's written in dialect (ala Irvine Welsh), I can spell really! And I don't speak like this either! Cheers, John S. Wandering Days It's five o'clock and I'm ready to leave. I hastily say a few goodnights and I'm off oot the office door. I'm walking a bit too fast. I stumble doon the stairs and open the front door, walking oot intae Princes Street. Reaching intae ma pocket I press play oan ma Walkman. The sounds of Belle & Sebastian's 'My Wandering Days Are Over' fills ma ears as a continue walking towards the West End. The music immediately makes me grin. I feel the pressures from the day lift from ma head and notice a slight spring appear in ma step. The street's mobbed though, bloody tourists. Bloody festival. I weave in and out between them until I get stuck behind a daft family of yanks. I don't fuckin' believe it, their aw huddin hands wi each other, takin up maist of the pavement. Some people don't have two brain cells tae rub together, it's bloody scary. Aw fat as fuck tae. I push through between the bloke and the wife, and I can hear their comments over the music. But am not interested. I turn the volume up on the Walkman and keep on walking. That wee smile quickly returns to ma face. I run across the road just in time before the lights turn tae green and the traffic moves on to the next queue, at the next set of lights. As I begin to walk up Lothian Road, I reach intae ma pocket to pull a fag from the packet. Then I remember that joint we started at lunchtime. We hudnae finished it before getting back tae work, and I still had nearly half. I pull whats left of the joint ootae the fag packet instead, and get a funny look from an auld dear at the bus stop as I light it wi ma zippo. It's far to nice a night to take the bus hame. It's just efter five and the sun is slowly sliding down behind the castle and it turns the pavement's and buildings gold. I keep on walking. At one point I feel I could just keep on walking forever. No need to sleep or eat, soaking up the sunshine and the music would give me all the energy I needed. But by the time I'm up tae the Kings, am glad am nearly hame. The sun has fallen below the rooftops and it's a bit colder in the shade. The music finishes and the walkman stops with a click. Actually, Sweet F.A derives from the girl of the name Fanny Adams ( this is a true story folks). She was horribly murdered, cut upp into small pieces and thrown into a lake. Sailors around these times used to receive tins of mutton as their food rations. These tins didn't contain very much meat in them, and it was in tiny little bits. So as lads like to do, they made jokes about it, referring to the sweet meat in their tins as being like Fanny Adams and thus Sweet Fanny Adams began to refer to pretty much nothing, which led to sweet fuck all. phew, so that is why I study linguistics. So I can enlighten the world with the origin of common phrases. anybody want to know where c*** comes from? Sinister: NY PICNIC ENDS IN DISSOLUTION OF SCOTTISH BAND

The NY Picnic finally came to be -- thanks Matt, for a great job organizing it! Here's what happened: 30+ Sinisterines met in East River Park for a delightful day in the sun as the breeze off the river reminded them of a summer wasting . The mighty states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and I-Know-There-Are-Others -I'm-Sorry-If-I've-Forgotten were represented. Delegates were also sent from across the pond. Food of all sorts was spread around on colorful picnic blankets by the river under some trees and the group undertook to lounge about in fetching twee fashion, discussing the state they were in and other simple things. All was going well until a squirrel, bearing a list of its Ten Favorite Bands written in numerical order on an acorn, attempted to descend from a tree, making threatening noises at Lauren who was sitting below. MickMcMick decided to fend it off with a chinese yoyo, setting off quite the rollercoaster ride of events (which, as you will see, put an end to the dreams of fame and fortune of a certain glaswegian octet). The squirrel decided to fight back and Mick was forced to retreat, tangling himself up in a bicycle left carelessly lying around by some dog on wheels. Mick was left bruised and battered on the ground, getting little sympathy from the rest of the group as it was quite clearly not very fucking belle and sebastian of him to go after the squirrel in the first place. "The boy done wrong again," agreed Ethan and Jessica. In an attempt to do something pretty while you can, Brian then tried to soothe everyone's angst over this troubling display by offering posters (which he had gotten from Matador by citing a close but completely untrue blood relationship to Seymour Stein) to one and all. Megan ("I never get any B&S souvenirs it's not fair") held out for the large special poster and Brian, in an attempt to be fair, decided to hold a competition. The beautiful poster was greased up with some honey from a sangwich shaped like a star, and tossed into the East River. Like Dylan in the movies, Megan jumped into the river without a look back in an attempt to have the poster as her own. The greased poster, however, kept slipping from her grasp, and she was halfway to Jonny's house across the river when she lost strength and began to sink. Sadly, most of the group were looking around the park and seeing other people going about their activities, drawn particularly to the stars of track and field who were competing beyond the footie fields. Laurel noticed that Megan was sinking and yelled "If you're feeling sinister, hold on!" and hailed a passing police boat while other listees asked each other "Is it wicked not to care?" and passed around Ben's cheese and cracker plate. The ensuing rescue operation caused quite a stir, and the press arrived. Megan was pulled from the water, shivering like a fox in the snow, while the chief of police, trying to claim his 3..6..9.. seconds of light gave his statement to the 10 o'clock news. He began by saying, "Me and the major here are pleased we could serve the public good. It is not safe to ease your feet in the sea when wearing a cardigan. Too many of these young "popsters" suffer serious injury each year." Meanwhile, a reporter from the NY Post, nosing about the picnic site, noticed a copy of a cd bearing the title The Boy With the Arab Strap. He surmised that this picnic was NOT the innocent little event it was purported to be and decided it was more likely a perverse cult led by some vicious foreign influence leading innocent Americans astray. Overhearing Joss and his two mates speaking under their breaths in foreign accents to a gentleman from Oxford, he alerted the authorities, who began questioning them regarding the chickfactor in the cult. Sadly, unable to answer satisfactorily due to an overdose of Taco Bell burritos, they were hauled off to jail and subsequently deported. Megan meanwhile decided she needed to sleep the clock around after her ordeal. She screamed to her roommate, "Get me away from here I'm dying" and began hitting the chief of police with her soggy prize poster (which she had refused to leave the water without). She too was taken away by the authorities and remains in custody while her recent trips to the former soviet union are investigated. The rest of the picnic group was sent to deprogrammers who questioned them about the significance of what dirty dream number two might mean. Mayor Giuliani called a press conference and declared that New York City would not put the book back on the shelf until the entire incident had been completely investigated. "Our crime statistics are the best they've ever been -- I've been the best mayor this city has seen in a century of fakers. This bunch of loopers, obviously under the influence of amphetameanies, will not ruin the safety of our citizens." As the sun set and the park emptied, a huge yacht sitting at anchor in the river began to move slowly out toward the Atlantic. Those with binoculars would have seen, ensconced in plush teak chairs on the aft deck, 8 people being served champagne and canapes by uniformed cabin boys. "Another string bean, Jean," ordered a boy with a trumpet as he settled back against the cushion. The captain pushed the throttle forward under the orders of the offensively aromatic Stuart David, who had barked into the intercom, "Listen, this is pish, I'm leaving." He was surrounded by a cloud of buzzing insects whose genus, it was decided, was mayfly. The fey Stuart Murdoch took a bite of his pastie de la bourgeoisie as he surveyed the scene on the shore. He turned to the girl in pedal pushers next to him and commented, "Well, too bad... looks like we'll have to cancel the US tour." She nodded, muttering, "That's a shame, it could have been a brilliant career." Stevie shed a tear or two because had been going to use his earnings from the tour to fulfill the lifetime wish of a close friend. "There goes Judy and the dream of horses," he sobbed. The rest of the group, thankful they had not been arrested, decided it had all been just a spaceboy dream anyway. hello boys and girls allright, so i was a little mean the other day (or just saying what everyone else thought, depending on who you asked) when i ranted a bit about reading the faq et al. well, i'm still having issues with getting 80 million emails a day (and *please* only write one or two a day of more than one line!!!!) but honey paul (aka ps mitchell to you newbies) was kind enough to point that out. so i'm trying to relax a bit. but anyway, there were a couple people who have been making me feel so lovely, all with their first posts. mr/ms c hall beguiled me into reading their full post, and i've been quite happy with julien boudreau's posts as well. charming newbies. i guess i'm trying to say that i love this mailing list, it's frightening to think how many of my friends are on it, whether i met them beforehand or afterwards. and i've met so many people who are now important to me through it.... urk, i sound silly i fear. but please, try to get a feel for the list and then write uniquely in a way that fits in. sorry for the rather serious nature of this post. i'm tired and a little annoyed right now, though i must say that the picnic this afternoon was utterly wonderful and i'm so glad to have met all you new folk, and that there *will* be further nyc picnics in the future. i'll try to post something about it tomorrow. xox megan ps, as there seems to be an interest in tigermilk, perhaps we should put together another system whereby someone hooks up people willing to *tape* copies with people who'd like one. i'll do it if no one else volunteers too. but *please* discuss this with me rather than the list. mkl206(a)is8.nyu.edu visit the magnetic fields web page at: http://www.dissemination.com/megan/magneticfields/ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: dc show and new person stuff

I see a few people on the list are going to the Black Cat show; anybody who is considering making the d.c. date should--it's a great, intimate club. Also, B&S fans should check out the Momus show at the Black Cat the week before. Momus is overeducated foppishness at its finest!! Just joined the list...overwhelmed by the amount of mail, but learned about the d.c. show early as a result, so thanks. Alas, I'm a bigger fan of "Sinister" and the "Lazy Line Painter Jane" and "3..6..9" EPs than "Arab Strap," but what the frick, it's a free world. For the U.S. fans, has anyone seen a B&S vid on MTV? Sinister: my thoughts

Greetings from Miami...... It's been a year since I started listening to B + S, and I can say that, after a few listens, TWATTYBUS is infinitely better than Sinister. In fact, I listen to Jane and Wheels more than Sinister. I am no critic, I just know that Stuart's voice and the musical arrangements are more entrancing. Brilliant Career is mesmerizing. Care also is a g-dsend. Others, too. After discovering B + S, I now know how Richard Dreyfuss felt in Close Encounters: Utterly obsessed with something he had no control over. This is how i feel about the music. Radiohead and Buffalo Tom are the only others which, well, make me FEEL. During tonight's Rosh Ha Shana dinner lyrics to Brilliant Career were rolling off my tongue. My mom gave me some looks...I sympathize with you, Richard. I hope your journey was nice; mine certainly is. For three years I have been eagerly anticipating Buffalo Tom's next release (Sept. 29). It is, however, going to be quite difficult to eject TWATTY from my player.
