Hi everyone, I just want to complain about Matador a bit...I STILL HAVEN'T HEARD TBWTAS YET...here's how this developed: A few weeks ago, I moved from Berkeley back home to Texas until the end of the month, when I am leaving for school at Sussex. So knowing in advance that I wouldn't be able to find the album in my hometown (and I HAVEN'T), I decided to order it directly from Matador, one CD and one LP. I called them up on the 2nd of September, and they said "We'll have it to you in 1-2 weeks, for sure before 2 weeks" I wanted to get it sooner than 2 weeks, but I settled for that because I had no choice. I called them occasionally to see if they had sent it yet, and of course they hadn't, they just said "It's just so hectic here, etc" and they kept on pushing back the date...to over three weeks! Since I'm leaving very soon, I finally decided to order it from Amazon, which will take them 2-3 days. I was hesitant to do that, b/c I they don't carry the LP. The moral of my story is that I find Matador mail order pretty repugnant...can the person from Matador explain why they've taken so long and why the mail order people lie so much (the last time I talked to them I told them that I had to leave in a week and he promised to get it out for sure by then, like he was doing me a favor, and I found out yesterday that they still haven't shipped it). It's terrible, isn't it? Speaking of homies: It's damn dangerous to listen to Belle and Sebastian in the ghetto. I was dropping off my date from last night at her building in DC and we decided to share a romantic cuddle + smoke on the hood of my car and I'd had "The Boy with the Arab Strap" in the CD player which I left playing with the windows down, which was good and perfect for a little while until I realized that I was in fact in the middle of the ghetto listening to the whitest music imaginable, getting stared at like a Martian in pedal-pushers. I half expected some seven-foot-tall fellow to stride up and say "Do you mind if we dance witcho dates?" It was at that point that I thought it perhaps wiser to pop in Canibus or Lauryn Hill but didn't want to really wreck the mood so I settled for K-Ci and JoJo (not really, but I did turn it way down). I must apologize to David K for flying off the handle about the indie-solidarity comments; my oversight was not realizing that Woolies demanded the super-distributor discount SO THEY COULD PUT INDIE STORES IN THE GRAVE FOR GOOD I'd like to think. Not that they're really actually selling the same merchandise, I mean, indie and big chain stores have somewhat overlapping but usually quite different target markets (i.e. bedsit obsessives/casual listeners). Indie record stores, I think, definitely have it a lot easier than, say, independent clothing stores or the like which are selling to pretty much the same people who buy their clothes at Big K. I don't think there's really any need to worry about Belle and Sebastian getting too famous, their music isn't really garish or danceable or radio-ready enough to make any kind of real mainstream impact, I don't think..... and I pray to someday swallow those words. We should all hope for a cooler world and want to share, not hoard, something this priceless.... I sometimes feel that people who want a band they love to "stay indie" or stay un-famous or something are only into the music because it makes them feel cooler than their fellow human.... Yesterday a friend told me that he had to return his copy of the TWATTYBUS-cd to the store 'cause it fades in too late, ie "Career" starts with "...had" instead of "...he had". He already had the promo so he could compare, so I know he's not talking bollocks. The CD he bought was the Delabel-version, so I fear all of us on the European mainland are stuck with a shoddily mastered CD. Koen

Of course in between all this thoughtfullness, he enjoys having sex for 6 weeks non-stop, which is all down to his tantric yogic flying experiences that he manages to keep it up for so long, although with the large amount of advertising currently being afforded to arab strap technology, Sting need never yoga again. If they repeat that South Bank Show, watch it, it's incredibly funny. I believe the one about David "A" Stewart is just as funny too - someone told me, he apparantly "artily" poses in front of a large number of television sets whilst he talks twaddle. That photo in that album is incredibly funny though. I sort of imagined him thinking of the idea... "yes... I can see it now, on horseback, with a strange medieval instrument". In any case, I'll forever associate him with the time when Suzanne out of Grange Hill was convinced she was having an affair with Mr.Hotford - because of the lyrics to Don't stand so close to me. By the way, cheers for all the replies regarding the meet up. It should be a good laugh, we're gonna try and finalise some time for it to take place so's that people can work out whether they can come. Can I apologise in advance as we're going to have to pick a particular date. Now this date won't suit everyone and some people will no doubt want me to move it. I've already had conflicting wishes from people as regards when it's going to be so unfortunately someone's going to lose out. Rest assured I'll try desperately to make it happen on a day when most people can come along. Let's face it, the only good record shop in the world, following the demise of Ear Ere, is Ultima Thule, and they stock bollocks. I hate record shops, even the good ones. I mean one. Sir Anthony H!O!P!kins is coming to the film festival. Another thing I hate is "listening posts". Bleeurgh! Germs! You've got the lurgy if you've used one. The best record shop ever was Swordfish records in Brum. It was tiny and cramped and all the CDs were displayed on shelves, like in somebody's house, so it was really difficult to see what they were, and they had the Manson Family album in the window and the staff were obviously instructed to laugh at the customers, regardless of what they bought, in my case a splendid Sun Ra compilation. I'm not surprised they laughed really. So did my dad. I think I've told this story before. This once magnificent cornerstone of Birmingham cultural life is no more. Or else it has moved. I realise that all of the above is complete crap, but no way am I deleting it now. Sinister: My trip to Woolies

Crumbs, I didn't think my trip to Woolies would start such an ethical debate. But I don't mind helping it on a bit. David K says that to buy from a major store only helps them to dictate what you'll buy next. Surely, buying indie records from major stores will make them stock more indie stuff, which I hope everyone agrees is A Good Thing (except those people who don't want their favourite indie bands to become more successful, of course). So I say boycott the small indie record shops, and go to Virgin and HMV like the rest of us. Sinister: Space Boy Dream lyrics

Hi everyone, Well, I'm one of the hordes of newbies who signed up to the list in the last couple of weeks. And very fantastic the new album is too. Anyway, as a sacrificial offering to buy everyone's friendship, I worked out the lyrics to Space Boy Dream last night. It didn't take as long as I thought - only about 20 minutes (for a song less than 2 mins long!). To the bloke from Lancaster - I know what you mean. I grew up there, and the summer I came back from university to find "Closing Down" posters in the window of the greatest record shop in the world, Ear Ere, was a very sad one. Still, life goes on. So, here they are: I dreamt I had to go up Mars. Im always kidding on about going to Mars through the day but faced with the reality of it, in a dream, I was terrified. And it wasnt going to be like a mini trip. There was three of us going, but we couldnt all go into the same ship, we had to go one at a time, with a day between us. I had to go first, and it was the thought of passing through all that black space, all the darkness with nothing in it, and then being the first one to land there, all alone. I knew it was supposed to be all dark around, with just a red surface, but what if I got there and it was light, all civilised and populated and stuff. So I made a plan. The other two astronauts were going to be my guiding assistant. My dad would come first after me, so I decided when I landed that I would just stay in my seat until he got there, and we could both get out together, and look around and see what sort of things were there. And when I woke up, and I was lying there in the darkness, I thought I had landed, and I just lay still for a while, waiting for my dad to get there too. (Funky instrumental to end) I'm pretty confident that these are right. One questionable is "like a mini trip". I think he says "min' trip", running the two words together. Also, "guiding assistant" doesn't really seem right, but I'm pretty sure that's what he says.
