If life were perfect, StuM would music me to sleep every night. I think I'm the only person here who could talk about Belle and Sebastian non-stop. Not that I mind the off-topic stuff...some of it is very entertaining (most of it isn't). I just like talking about, y'know...*them*. ~Reid Actually, I've found most of the topics to be educational in one way or another. Stuck in Heartland, USA, it's not exactly possible to pop on over to Barcelona's gothic zona for the weekend. But I must say I enjoy the B&S posts the most, keep them coming. Select magazine has a piece this month something to the effect of "...Only in America" that lists all the absolute worst that the American music industry has to offer. It lists the Matchbox, Third Eye, Sugar Ray, Jewel, Cherry Poppin', Blues Traveller, Dave MAtthews, etc. Each and every one of these bands , is of course, crap. Where are the mentions of the Beastie Boys, Beck, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Wilco,REM, Victoria Williams etc... And if they are going to list all of these American phenomenons shouldn't All Saints, Robbie Williams, Gomez, Travis, Embrace, Catatonia et al get mentions as examples of "only in England crap." Of course Matchbox 20 sucks, and of course American commercial radio sucks, but don't buy into some cynical America sucks musical reasoning. "Why would they want us there, they've got everything" -George Harrison, before getting on the plane to come to America in 1964 I'm sorry to vent a little bit, it jsut seems like an as equally ridiculous train of thought as the early nineties "England sucks." crap. If you've already seen this, i sent it again because I think my email messed up, if you did sorry, but one thing i'd like to add is "One of the stupidest things you can do is criticize someone else's taste in music" ---Mr. Lawson (Read on to find significance) I think I'll be welcoming Reid's posts from now on. His last was the first one of his that I've seen, and its good to have someone with as much knowledge about about the band that I do about......em......corned beef. (??) I'm liking the news, and info about future tracks. but I kind of missed part, is the band in the studio now or are they not? i find myself going to the jeepster website constantly because of the lack of other B&S sites. not to offend anyone who has a site about the band, I probably havent found them. anyone know any good ones? I would love it if there was one with the coolness of the radiohead (gasp!) planet telex site, (underworld.net/radiohead) I happen to really enjoy radiohead, and I've kind of found that some on the list dont and some do. Oh, for those who are afraid of Coke, there's another "secret recipe" soda to be afraid of. It's a store brand of a chain of grocery stores here in the US, and is called Dr. Smooth. It's a knock-off of Dr. Pepper, but boasts of its secret recipe. Ginger :) Ginger Nance gnance(a)email.unc.edu http://www.unc.edu/~gnance The Natural Life Cycle Of Mailing Lists Every list seems to go through the same cycle: 1.Initial enthusiasm (people introduce themselves, and gush a lot about how wonderful it is to find kindred souls). 2.Evangelism (people moan about how few folks are posting to the list, and brainstorm recruitment strategies). 3.Growth (more and more people join, more and more lengthy threads develop, occasional off-topic threads pop up). 4.Community (lots of threads, some more relevant than others; lots of information and advice is exchanged; experts help other experts as well as less experienced colleagues; friendships develop; people tease each other; newcomers are welcomed with generosity and patience; everyone -- newbie and expert alike -- feels comfortable asking questions, suggesting answers, and sharing opinions). 5.Discomfort with diversity (the number of messages increases dramatically; not every thread is fascinating to every reader; people start complaining about the signal-to-noise ratio; person 1 threatens to quit if *other* people don't limit discussion to person 1's pet topic; person 2 agrees with person 1; person 3 tells 1 & 2 to lighten up; more bandwidth is wasted complaining about off-topic threads than is used for the threads themselves; everyone gets annoyed). 6.Finally: 1.Smug complacency and stagnation (the purists flame everyone who asks an 'old' question or responds with humor to a serious post; newbies are rebuffed; traffic drops to a doze-producing level of a few minor issues; all interesting discussions happen by private email and are limited to a few participants; the purists spend lots of time self-righteously congratulating each other on keeping off-topic threads off the list). hello sinners am i really that deadpan? i am beginning to get worried. anyway, i'd like to publicly apologise again to rory for the beard misunderstanding. it's a relief to know that i was mistaken. i'm glad i made an interesting inpression.... now, reading that 12 nicens albums of last year list, i felt like i was reading american psycho, in the bits where patrick goes on about genesis and whitney houston for a chapter each. i skipped those chapters. i ended up in a demo about tuition fees last night, by accident. what abject joy! it was very amusing, and i simply couldn't take it seriously. not when the student masses were seemingly led by a man with a lisp. and someone was passing pringles round. i think i shamed one of my friends, who had inadvertantly joined the socialist worker party, by telling one of the swp members that i had 'apathy up to my ears'. he told me i was playing into the hands of the ruling classes. or something. i was too unsober to think of a good argument. dear diary, in my fantastic job i have to explain what digestive biscuits are, to tourists. and why cafetiere isn't pronounced cafeteria. I think i have an issue of Record Collector from either January or February 1997 in which Tigermilk is being sought, in an ad in the back, for £60 ( about$110 ). The thing about waiting a few months is probably not the case for a lot of people who paid a high price for it,myself included there. Yeah, if somrone bought it as some kind of invrestment, then they probably will not get the big return they had hoped for. I don't foresee the original pressing ever being seen as common as dirt though :) People of France, lend me your ears, and your vcrs! Douglas Coupland is, as you wonderful people stated already, capable of rocking our worlds. I don't know which one(s) of his books is/are my favourite(s) because they are all so fantastic and full of the greatest little images and sentences, which piece together into a crazy quilt of literary genius. Blur quotes douglas coupland (or douglas coupland quotes blur, tho I think that mr coupland said it first) on the liner notes for Modern Life is Rubbish... The bit regarding Legislated Nostalgia. I think of that phrase when I remember suburban childhood... it wasn't like TV, yet I see televised childhood and remember mine as somehow similar. I don't understand that. Perhaps a psychology expert could explain that. Also I'd like to apologise to J. Murtagh & the others.. sorry, i don't know your names or I would use them. If my posts are too long or too reminiscent of a ramble to a diary, then forgive me. I haven't been on this list too long; a matter of weeks, i think it's been. I read the FAQ and thought I was in the boundaries of that. If I've drifted out of line, it's purely because my attention span isn't too fantastic. I've enjoyed the posts recently, until content started being evaluated.. I don't mean that as a jab at anyone; merely stating an opinion. so there's my thoughts; hope this hasn't dragged on. Claire....this is simalar to your joke: Theres a smartie and a jellybaby in a pub, and they're just chatting and having a drink when a polo comes up and starts knocking the jellybaby about and calling him names before going away again. The smartie turns to the jellybaby and says "why don't you stand up for yourself mate?
