well, i'd like to say helloooooooo to everyone out there who is home right now on this friday evening. of course, it's only 7:45 er so right now, but all those UKers are dancing like the brackish fire gods that they are. happy wooooooooooing! i checked out douglas coupland's 'generation x' today from the z. reynolds smith library, here on campus. jygsaw dave told me to go read 'girlfriend in a coma', but alas, the Z didn't have said book. it's quite good. i actually like the color pink. it's got that lazy quality to it. colors can have feelings too, you know. the hideous Floyd passed us by here in lonely North Carolina. my insatiable (one) laura llew can attest to such things. we only got a bit of wind and rain, but nothing to ruffle any skirts, sadly. and stephen merritt wrote a song with north carolina in it! oh but it's on the new box set, vol. 1. i'm not sure if i dig the new sound, though. i like synths. they sound like bubblegum. unwrapped, of course. laura, we must get together. how about the gybe show in winston, and then in chapel hill? i think young puzzle-happy dave is interested as well. we can be the young team, hip, modern, and southern. buyah. all of these b&s side projects, whoa! can we please have the new album? anything, please! i need some new stuart david basslines to learn (laugh at) and hammond organ power chords to dance like a rabbit to. that's right, i just ended a sentence with a preposition. i'm a scoundrel, a dirty empirical SLUT. i felt like lesley jo with that last bit. sinister schizophrenia, whoa!! a while ago i added jessicaxo to my aol instant messenger list, and then when she came on, i tried to type a few pithy phrases, and she never answered back. jessica, honestly, i'll wipe that little xo right off your screen name. i'm kidding. blakie was hurt. he cried himself to nap, had sleep for dinner, and wrapped himself in green knitted curtains that still had a bit of dust on them from the winter of '73. i bought two 'random' albums the other day...yo la tengo's 'i can hear the heart beating as one' and guided by voices 'under the brush under the stars'. at least that's what i think it's called. i'm not really getting into either, actually. it's not making me all hot and swarthy. not like beer. not like b&s. ok, it's obvious i've become neurotic and insipid, simultaneously. like i said, it's friday, i'm in my room, and this desk lamp is LAUGHING at me....wheeeeeeee i'm flying down the slide, it's 1981, and my diaper needs changing.... love blake xx the nerdy shy eyed pacifist ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ "I am not Jesus, though I have the same initials." - Jarvis Cocker +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". I^Òve been wrestling with a beast of a cold as administered to me by my adorable housemates, and I have been inspired to write by the feeling of those khaki-coloured, tobacco-stained throat oysters gliding down my neck. Even if it meant not keeping it real. You see? I read that in a book in the Stevie Trousers pop archive. Other exciting news includes the apparent plans of the mighty Exeter City Football Club to name the new stand they^Òre building (to replace the old Big Bank) The Duke Stand, after Exeter^Òs most famous resident. I can^Òt say I blame them. Exeter Falcons Speedway team apparently have a hot dog stand called Piezoelectric Unit. I've lost my mac. If you find it, will you return it please? Hmmm...I know I may have started a thread awhile back about Brian Wilson vs. the Beatles but even I didn't have the balls to say that. Considering the Beatles were given LSD by their dentist in '64, you're saying everything from Help to Let It Be is crappy? Wow...thats about all I can say because I am simply stupefied... Ailsa made me feel alot less lonely when she said: "I don't really know if I like this idea. Say it's a 12 track album - that's half the songs that aren't by Stuart. Which is not good if you're a big Struan fan like me." I couldn't agree more. Maybe it means they came up with an idea to start the song, a chord pattern perhaps, and then Stuart took the ball and ran with it. I really hope so, because even though I think TBWTAS is my fave album of all-time I say that meaning only the Struan songs and Is It Wicked... Seymour Stein is nice and all but the other two non-Struan tracks are just pish and then some. I keep thinking that if maybe they had included 11 of Struan's tracks and Isobel's take then the record would have been alot better. I mean, especially Stuart D's tracks, which are very lovely by themself but when placed next to anything Struan even breathed upon they shrivel up and die. Paper Boat is quite nice. Maybe this is just an extension of Stuart trying to defuse the spotlight everyone seems to want to shine on him. Maybe if he doesn't include enough Isobel tracks she holds out on him...who knows? This brings to mind something else I've been thinking about for awhile. I know B&S are a band and not a cult of personality surrounding Stuart, but let's be honest: the man's voice is the reason most of us (myself included) come back everyday to hear the same album for the 400 millionth time. It never gets old. It really is their trump card and to totally throw that away for half of the album seems a bit arbitrary to me. I think everyone one of them are the best players at their instruments that I've heard in ages and the way they play together just totally befuddles me in its perfection and heart, but this would be like Wee Chris telling Stevie that he wants to play lead on a track or Isobel taking over the keys: sure its fun but is it really the best they can do? I play drums and when my band fools around at practice I noodle around on whatever instrument is lying nearby but I know if we did that for an entire song it would just lose that certain something. I don't know...maybe I'm expecting too much. Me and Todd H. of the Sinister list are getting together at University of Maryland on Oct 15th for Midnight Madness, which is the first practice of the men's basketball team. If anyone fancies meeting us and taking part in a drunken, stoned mini-Sinister meet they are more than welcome. Come prepared to scream at collegiate men with growth abnormalities... Sinister: london: brash, outrageous and free?

sinisterines, i've given up tussling with the business world and quit my job to flee san francisco for london. well, for a week, at least. i've been to london once before, for two days right before bowlie. i carried my enormous bag around paddington station, then sat in the park around the way and sipped rancid coffee, reading about those teenage gang debutantes that killed all those kids in colorado. people could tell i was american, and they ignored me, as well they should've. this time won't be like that, though, and i'll actually have time to wander around and soak up the cultcha. can any of you recommend bars(pubs?)/clubs/record stores/dens of inequity that i should check out? you can even reply directly to me if you're so inclined. (thanks!) hello again, I just remembered someone mentioning High Fidelity in a post and I just have to say that this book is one of my absolute favourites! Nick Hornby stuffs more insights per page than any author I've ever read... insights that I can relate to... Any of us Belle & Sebastian fans will immediately identify with the main protagonist's love of music, and probably his neurotic antics as well. ....not that I'm saying any of you folks are neurotic :-) .... His latest book "About a Boy" is equally hilarious and brilliant. Sinister: french rap and drunken boys

darling, darling sinister, first of all, the maddest props to everyone who's written to me to tell me to stop kekking myself about cambridge - i'm still scared, but not quite so scared as i was before, so thank you ;) you're all lovely, lovely things. i've been panicking today because i don't actually have a bank account at present to pay my scholarship and parental contribution cheques into, and so quite how i'm going to pay that eight hundred pounds bill waiting on my desk in cambridge at this very moment is beyond me... fuck it, i'd better get drunk and hope it disappears. spread eagle, tomorrow night, seven thirty - does that sound good? see you there martin and lucy, and (hopefully) lovely matt and geoff. let me know. anyway, archel (who i almost always agree with) shocked me with 'i bloody hate french rapping'. i dunno, i think it sounds really unbearably cool - if you want to hear shitty rap, try swedish, czech or russian. and some german rap is appaling too, but some of it (kinderzimmerproject [sp?]) is rather fine. i dunno, i think french rap sounds really suave and sexy, like i could just mosie up to some supermodel in a parisian bar and whisper in her ear and impress her like in that kronenbourg advert... and to this day i still choose kronenbourg. whereas in fact in a parisian bar i'd get mocked (a) for not being head-to-toe in gucci (b) having no bank account, an unshaven face and silly hair (c) sounding and looking like an englishman trying to fit in in an alien atmosphere. oh well. i dunno, i think that french rap, like rap in most other languages, works best when the rapper just constructs complex plays on words, and puns away for a while (à la tribe called quest) rather than just boasting about how big his dick/ car/ 'prop'/ rolex/ bank account is, or how many 'niggas'/ 'bitches' he's beaten up. but that's just me. the parisian suburb slang, i believe, is called 'versl'en', which is 'l'envers' backwards. sort of. and it's very hard to understand, but when you get certain words it can be rather funny. a policeman is apparently known as a 'kuf' - boom boom indeed. but i might be wrong - my french is pretty dire. and i was told about it by a french aristocrat who made rude jokes about arabs, so quite what he knew about the industrial edges of paris i'm not quite sure. what else... yes, reading the new-enhanced-politically-correct-might-be-homo-then lady marian's comments on her winter shoes, i started to think... ever since i started cutting off my laces just above the holes and tying knots there instead, so i can slip them on rather than having to bother with things like laces, i've stopped snogging boys. this hasn't been through any deliberate choice, i don't think, but maybe... hmm... could my footwear customisation choices be a subconscious echo of my changing sexuality? while reading martin's additions to the 'mothers in pop' thread, i was listening to 'machine screw' by that famous band 'type o negative', a song which features the noise of a woman orgasming (or pretending to do so). and so, having a sick little mind, i was wondering if anyone else could think of any songs that feature the noise of people orgasming. i wonder if there are as many orgasm songs as there are mummy and son/ daughter colaborations? didn't think so. does anyone know anything about kid loco? i got a couple of his songs on a tape, and they're rather fine. as is his remix on the mogwai record. are these isolated incidents, or is all his stuff this much fun? i used to sniff lighter fluid, and i think that anyone who knows me can confirm that it hasn't done me any good, love to all of you, you wonderful, wonderful people, Marcus XXX [from saturday] mjmo2(a)cam.ac.uk +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". I'll tell you about my hi fi. Well, I'm not that rich so it's not shocking, but it's much better than the last one. 3cd changer a whopping 2 tapes (the old one didn't) and RDS an' all. Hurrah. I love it I COULD TELL YOU WHAT I'M THINKING (it never seems to work) I'm going to resort to one of these more intelligent discussions: The Narrow Wizard said what he felt: >Some of us have feelings that we just dont have the words to >describe adequately and when we try some of what we mean is filtered out >by our inability to find the right language. I get this feeling. Sometimes I wish you could just show someone what is in your head rather than put the extra strain on yourself to try and work out how to say it. One thing you could try is to tell things in stories. Just an idea, but I think it helps to make people see as much of the picture as possible. I also think that when you are listening to someone you should try and help them communicate by trying to imagine what is in their head. Oh dear.
