Hello Some chap wanted to know what song is used in the Natwest Hobo ad and as I helped make it, here are the details. The song is called 'Maybe Tomorrow', was written by Randy Sparks and performed by Terry Bush. Sadly it's not going to be released despite efforts by the Sun newspaper and the Big Breakfast. Sinister: the creation of a drunken myth

Hello camper-than-thous I am only just recovering from the weekend. Chapel choirs (or rather, the shenanigins which we get up to after Evensong on Sunday) are seriously detrimental to the health. I mean, fair enough that we played Twister till the early hours, but why did I drink quite so much, and WHY did I not sleep AT ALL? And then there was the feverish argument about the decline of society. Which went on for several hours. Sheesh. Also got chatted up by scary girl who sings tenor. Easy there, tiger. Come to think of it, all choirs are seriously debauched. Well, all choirs I've ever been in, apart from ickle school ones. Feeling rather ill yester evening, I still dragged myself off to the University Chorus rehearsal, as we're singing scary modern music by James Macmillan, and besides, I'm stalking one of the basses. Actually, it's more of a mutual stalking thing, and it's very entertaining indeed. He's had a haircut. Erica said > Kate Moss is the sort of girl that just shouldn't exist. The very lovely Steve Kado said something about "The Secret of NIMH", which is the most bogglingly wonderful animated film, and based on a very cool book. Did anyone else fancy cartoon characters when they were wee (or now, indeed)? Justin off NIMH may be a rat, but he's a very sexy one. Yes, I have a crush on a cartoon rodent. So sue me. I was shit at most sports at school, but I was scary in hockey (people scurried out of the way of the ball), and I'm actually quite good at badminton. It's a very twee sport, really. There's something about the required wrist action. Matron. People at my school didn't bother jabbing with forks in the dinner queue (although I fairly frequently went beserk nonetheless), they just lacerated with nasty crude *wit*. Well, it helps one to develop the ability to be witheringly nasty on cue. Which is nice. Has anyone heard of the band Owada? They make kind of conceptual pop music, some of which is vastly amusing, in a kind of minimalist-Fall-stylee. Top flight entertainment. I shall have to love you and bugger off, as I have a lunch engagement at Pierre Victoire - not an everyday occurrence, I hasten to add - it's my friend Sarah's birthday, and it's my mission to force her to wear the badge off her Barbie birthday card. Hello, I was reading the nme, apparently ol dirty bastard shouted "sperm donor" at a woman in court. Fancy that. I had to turn off that Gormenghast program, the guy with the long hair really turned my stomach, he's grotty. Like that bastard off the phone advert (not funkyseb) the mobile phone advert, the guy that's stalking that girl then gets to shag her for nothing. That's not on. Talking of which, don't read this if you don't like swearing or if your name is Stephen Pastel. I don't usually swear at all, I'm really quiet and I love little babies and puppies. ==================== A long time ago in a land called Partick there lived a young man called Stephen Pastel. He was the sort of ruffian that would call folk "wank" or "poof" and then batter them. And it wasn't just children, it was grown ups too. He thought he was the hardest cunt in town and whilst punching people he would cry out loud "the hardest cunt in town!", just like that. But he wasn't really the hardest cunt in town, his rich dad was paying everyone behind his back to let him think he was. And, you know, people didn't mind getting punched by him, because it didn't hurt (it actually tickled a wee bit). Now then, one day the circus came to town. Stephen Pastel fucking loves the circus, that is a well known indie fact. He couldn't sleep the night before, his legs where kicking and he kept getting up for glasses of water and looking at the clock and wishing it was circus time. At long last the time arrived, and he sprinted to the big top faster than a speeding rocketship. He ran up to the best seat, punched the woman sitting in it and told her to fuck off. Which of course she did, because she had already been paid by his rich dad. And so the show began...colourful clowns fell about silly, lions roared, the strong man lifted up a really fat woman and a man did a handstand. Stephen Pastel was loving it. Then he saw her - the trapeze girl. She was a beauty and he fell in love with her. After the show he thought to himself "I must meet her, and make her mine". He wandered up to the girls caravan and chapped on the door. "Hello", he said, "this is Stephen Pastel here, hard cunt. I love you, I want to marry you". "Go away", came the girly reply from inside "I'm not interested". Stephen Pastel was at first flabbergasted, then he was raging. "Well, if you don't want me", he shouted, "I'm gonna have to batter you raaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrr". He burst in and punched the girl on the nose. But instead of falling over like people normally did, she just looked at him. "That wasn't sowa at all," she said, "you'we no hawd cunt, you'we soft. Your wich daddy has been pawing people to let you punch them so that you'wd thwink that you'we hard!". Then she pulled of her wig - she wasn't a girl she was a man. In fact she was the Murdoch! "You'we fow it now!", the Murdoch said and proceeded to punch Stephen Pastel until he ran away crying. He was distraught! How could his own dad have done this to him? He wasn't hard, he was soft, in fact he was so soft he could be a qualified librarian. Then and there, he decided to devote the rest of his life to being lovely. Sinister: On french pop and other things

Hello, you lovely people: The last bits about french pop have been really interesting. Arantxa and Charles suggestions were great (there was somebody else, I just donŽt remember.....), but I wouldnŽt consider Pascal Comelade as pop. He plays really rare but fascinating songs, but is much different of the ones mentioned before. He plays with toy pianos, little guitars, banjos and other stuff like that. I can suggest Kitten Mouse to play Françoize Breut, lovely chanteuse, girlfriend of Dominique A, with sad pop songs which are really beautiful. However, I think that Kitten Mouse and everybody else in America must know something. An american label called Shelflife (If I understood well our local DJ) is going to release one of the most beautiful albums ever made. itŽs called "un soplo en el corazón" ("A blow in the heart") from the band FAMILY. It was originally released in 1994, and itŽs the best Pet Shop Boys mixed with the best Smiths, lovely voices and sad lyrics. Americans, please, do yourself a favour and get it. Or, at least, have a listen from it. I donŽt know if SRD will release it at the UK (it was originally released here by Elefant records), but it might. Jesús Gil ? I wonŽt say anything else than heŽs a fat old franco-lover fascist. Now heŽs judged, which leads me to think if Peter Miller is following his case. Peter are you still there ? At first I thought your post wouldn't merit a response from me. But I was wrong. Giving the Sinister list a lecture on what IS and IS NOT art, I would assume, would not be a wise thing to do. Are you trying to be the Joseph Goebells of this list? No doubt you've never heard of him, because that would require some actual KNOWLEDGE of art. Goebells was Hitler's sidekick in charge of confiscating the "expressionistic and abstract" works of europe. Hitler, as anyone elementary history class will teach you, was a failed artist. He couldn't grasp abstract ideas. So, many years later, he stole and destroyed everything that he considered "degenerate art." Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's not art. That probably means it IS art. What is Belle and Sebastian to Haydn or Mozart? Out of context, they are nothing. But, to put Sinisterines in the role of those "ecstatic art-critics," it pulls it all back into context- we understand them. We love them. We love that they are the music for us, for OUR time. Dear Sinisterinies Hello to you all and a very happy and belated New Year greeting! Hope you guys all had a great and unforgettable New Year's Eve and ushered in the New Year in fine style. Unfortunately *I* was working (as a waiter at the Hyatt hotel). Not only did I have to work from 6 or so in the evening till 3:30 the next day! But I had a headache AND I WASN'T TIPPED:) (I know that sounds greedy but there was all this hype about getting tipped generously in New Year's Eve in previous years and you'd have expected even bigger sums on *this* occasion) Ah well at least I was paid triple my normal amount:) For some peculiar reason unknown to me; Perth, W.A. is turning from cultural desert to be full of great events. Recently have been to see Smog (very lovely and wonderful) and also Cat Power. She (alone) was doing musical accompaniment to the classic silent film, "Passion of Joan of Arc" (a super slow-moving film and never have I seen so many close ups of the wide-open eyes of the lead actress Renee Falconetti but still very intriguing). It was intermittently transcendent- when it worked both music and image gelled together to create a feast for all senses that was very stark and moving. But it was ruined by her apologies for putting on a "crap show" (the audience was very appreciative and WE all thought it was going well but obviously not her) and half-an-hour from the end of the film, she said she was going for a drink of water and never came back. Swindled. Listees who have seen her before, does this happen often? Bootlegged both gigs with my microcassette corder and it turned out quite well. Just yesterday went to see his Dark Majesty himself, Nick Cave sans Bad Seeds but with Warren and Jim from Dirty Three and a bassist. They played at the Belvoir Amphitheatre, a gorgeous natural venue that is a good 45 minutes out of the city but well worth the trip. It has steps made out of grass and wood on which to sit and picnic on and it is surrounded by tall trees which make it seem like some magical reserve hidden in time. Nick Cave played all his most beautiful, heart-breaking and just plain breath-taking songs. Stuff like "Love Letter", "Ship Song", "People Ain't No Good" were so tear-jerking and delicately beautiful that all you could do was swoon. We sat sorta near the back (we arrived late) but still had a pretty good view. There were these two hippie over-the-hill rejects who kept heckling and were forcibly ejected (too late if you ask me) much to the cheers of the crowd. Why do people pay $55 to heckle the band? Someone please answer me! Also bootlegged this gig but it didn't turn out very well at all. The vocals are clear as is the music but there is so much background static/tape hiss (is it because it was outdoors?) that it nearly obscures it. All you bootleggers out there (don't worry I'll be discreet and not reveal your names, PLEASE GIVE ME TIPS ON HOW TO DO A PRETTY GOOD BOOTLEG! I just want a good memento of the great time I had at the gig:) not for any kind of financial reason (i.e. selling these tapes or something) Please tell me ASAP if you can help me out. Obviously the best thing to do would be to get more sophisticated equipment but let's presume I have very little money (a good assumption) ok? How do you record sans tape hiss or how do you get rid of it afterwards-HELP!:) Previously the International Festival of Perth was barren of any kind of really interesting events but this year is chockfull of 'em. First up is The Weir, that highly acclaimed ghostly play which I wanna see. Has any listees seen it and if so, what's it like? Also *gasp* Dot Allison (her out of the heavenly and legendary One Dove whom I intermittently rave about) is coming and I've never been more excited about a gig since Radiohead came in '97. This would be on par with if B&S came, i.e. relatively obscure (though of course B&S are pretty well known) but genius band dares to be different and NOT ignore Perth! How amazing is Dot Allison going to be? I'm just SO EXCITED! WOOHOO! When I first read it, I couldn't believe my eyes. Just said, "ohmigod!" for a full ten minutes and would have let out a little yelp too if I wasn't in a public place.
