Salutations, I feel awkward writing due to the recent influx of newuns coupled with the fact that I never became a Sinisterian for the purpose of posting. Because of this, I really didn't care that I was still in the nursery, but then last week something happened that was truly postable, and then the whole nursery thing became bothersome. Imagine my surprise when I receive my ticket to write the very day the keyboard DIES!!!!! Talk about cosmic interference! (At least I got to go out and bash the old one in true Luddite glory). However, I digress... For the past while, my only portal into the world of the LLPJ set of singles was one particularly bad and otherwise incomplete tape. I finally bit the bullet and decided I needed the proper CD version so I doled out the money (cringe). I can't imagine why I waited so long. Very happy-making. I also had to pick up a Godspeed album to replace the one I stole from my friend. What this required was going to evil HMV as they were the only record store to carry these things at the time. Needless to say it was a day of much expense. I find my wares and as I walk through the store I see one of the little flappy things that says: ELLIOTT SMITH Check this out only if you're into GOOD MUSIC Naturally, I laughed out loud. All of the kiddies in the neighbouring DANCE HITS area looked at me in scorn. I didn't care. One day they will have to read a VCR manual I proofread and WHO'LL BE LAUGHING THEN, EH? A lowly stockboy turned around and asked why I was laughing, which I took to be rude at first. I explained and then he said that sometimes the manager lets them puts phrases like that on the name cards. He then looked at my purchases and said: "Whoa, you're really eclectic eh!" I blushed. Very shy-making. To make a long story short, he offered to put something onto B&S's card out of the goodness of his heart. I was excited. I was about to say something about Narnia because he had a copy of the screwtape letters in his back pocket (not that i make a habit of looking in back pockets) but I held my tongue and thought the better of it as it did seem a bit contrived. Then I blanked. I had nothing to say. I said I'd get back to him with a good name. COMRADES! WHat am I to do? Unleash your well of wit and wisdom to help me categorize OUR category. More of the band's online diary below, this time from Chris. UK residents don't forget the band's appearance on TOTP tomorrow night at 7:30. They're probably recording it... right now. Honey x *** Diary of a Band 26/05/00 This is a strange time for the group. Obviously there's a lot going on with the single coming out, and the possibility of our biggest hit, and maybe being on TV and stuff. But we've not all been together for weeks. I'm sure the last time we were all in the same room was at the press conference down in London, and before that for the video, but as to when we last were doing any music I honestly can't remember. It's frustrating especially because last week myself and Andrew Divine were working on Landslide, a song of Isobel's that Evie Sands sang when she was here last year. Listening to the track which was recorded quite a while ago really made it apparent how much we'd improved over the course of working on the record. It's a shame not to be able to carry straight on. No doubt a few of you will have seen the NME feature last week. It is a strange situation where a music journalist who doesn't like our music attacks us, and Stuart in particular for not being vocal enough about our politics, which he seems to sympathise with. Anyway I thought Stuart came out of it okay. Anyone who pays any attention to what is happening in the world is bound to come to the conclusion that things need to change in some fundamental way if life for the majority of people is ever going to be better, but do people really need an indie band to tell them this? If you feel like a dose of reality read the book No Logo, an indictment of todays global lifestyle brands. I'd hoped to be able to tie things up in some neat way since this is the last one, but since most of you are probably away for the summer anyway it doesn't really matter. I guess the album will sum up the last year for us better than anything I could say here. So I'll just give a quick plug for my clubs - Tuesdays at Yang and Fridays at the Brewery Tap - and wish everyone a good summer. Dearest Sinistereenies, Sorry for my post yesterday...i was a suffering from 'Lost Soul Syndrome', that feeling of detatchment and no purpose. Anyway, i feel better now; my tigermilk lp will be with me by monday (yippee! Tigermilk parties...) and tis now the month of june, filled with exams (yuk), friends birthdays, my birthday, Snow Patrol/Alfie gig (19th June!!!) and Pilton!!! The post office was fully operational today...i didn't mention anything cos i'd look like a twat after calling the bobbies...they never called back neither... I made pancakes this morning..unhealthy (plus unhealthier with raspberry icecream!) and am making fajitas for lunch and penne for dinner. sorry for that, my menu isn't interesting to you... Snow patrol question - what is the name of the secret track? it's lovely...Snow patrol are such a good band, their songs are uplifting, but they have this underlying despair...like you can make a perfect pancake, but it's useless if it's not eaten...wierd analogy... hola! that review thing nick sent in, yeah? well, where it described la campbell as: "the giggling, sweetly nervous cellist". i read: "the giggling, sweaty, nervous cellist". no really, i did. im not just being nasty. (moi?) after a marathon 10 hour Bouzeathon yesterday (incorporating a tacky "NITE" club with The Townies - AKA My New Bessie Mates) we were walking (see also: stumbling) around town trying to get a taxi. i was doing a quite passable "Thats Amore!" for the benefit of my friends when we bumped into these american blokes. they said they were here on their "vacation" and they were from Michigan, to which i replied "oooh, i've got a yellow jumper with Michigan written on it!" (americans dont say "jumper" though, do they? they say "sweater" or something silly like that. isobel must have been wearing one of those when she encountered that pesky reporter...) i think they must have thought i was breeding yellow showhorses and cruelly branding their arses with "MICHIGAN" or something, cos they were looking at me like i had two heads. there's also the possibility that they couldn't unnerssshhhhtand what i was shhhhaaayinggg, of course. anyway, where is this going? oh yeah. they said they were going to see pearl jam tonight and asked were we going (like, *wild horses* couldn't stop me....). so we started talking about music. i asked them did they know B&S. they didn't. oh well. i see there is a picnic in Dublin this weekend. hmmm, i wonder how many will show up for that. the last time we tried to organise a meetup here, 4 people showed up. thats 4, *including* me. i spent the whole night talking to myself as i was the most interesting person there. and thats a Bad Sign. i apologise if this mail sucks filthy plums. but there you go. Sinister: Faggy but nice

Hello you glorious little specimens of humanity I HATE MY JOB BIT Yesterday, on the way home, this woman I work with said "I do like your shoes Lucy. Weren't they in fashion two or three seasons ago?" They're just black ballet shoes with little bows on them and I don't give a toss if they're fashionable or not because I like them. Grrr! And this, too, from the office fashion doyenne, in her navy sandals with sensible heels and thick straps. GRRRRR! WEEKEND BIT Having recently undergone the rigours of a splendidly ROCK picnic, I decided to spend last weekend quietly at my Mum and Dad's house. However, no sooner did I step through the front door, than the parents announced that we'd be going for a nice walk in the countryside. I looked down at my skirt and pristine trainers and grimaced but, not wanting to cause offence, agreed to go along. Bad idea. After an hour and a half of hacking across cow pat spattered fields, picking my way down sheltered (and therefore not exposed to the sun and therefore VERY MUDDY) pathways, and negotiating splintering stiles and rusty kissing gates somewhere in the middle of the wilderness we like to call Surrey, I was in a bit of a state and so were my Stan Smiths. Dad was very chivalrous and beat back the stinging nettles with a big stick and Mum rewarded me with a hug slab of sponge cake in the tea shop, but I was still pretty pathetic. Much as I'd love to be a rosy cheeked lass, dressed in florals and fearless of cattle, I can only conclude that I'm a complete townie. Not in the Kappa/Reebok Classics sense though. Obviously. PROPS BIT I'd like to thank Calumn for giving me the biggest laugh I've had in ages. I thought I took an unflattering photograph, but some of his pictures outshine mine by miles and miles. Every photo ever taken of me is rotten so I can't really talk, but my nomination for Mr Photogenic 2000 goes to poor Carsmile Steve, who deserves particular recognition for his outstanding dance moves up on the stage - funky! I'm not making up any captions though, because they'll be shite and unfunny. I've just collected my own pictures from Boots, so watch out all those of you I caught trying on items from a lady's wardrobe and/or wearing blood red nail varnish. And especially watch out if you hung a Hello Kitty nightie from your ears, you fool. PICNIC BIT Scots! Lock up your vodka! I've got the afternoon off work next Friday and it's looking increasingly likely that I'll be heading norf of the border just in time for the Edinburgh picnic. You have been warned. So, Isobel could be the new Britney, eh? I wonder if she wore a PVC catsuit to record Top of the Pops. Here's the Guardian review of the new album. Completely spot on, to my mind. And, heaven's above, it actually reviews the album and not the band's press profile. Whatever next? Underneath that is a piece from the Independent On Sunday. Ooooh - Nicholas Barber 4 Stuart Murdoch. What do you think of his contention that Isobel could be the next Britney is she was so inclined? I have my doubts, but now the BMA have got involved, who knows? >From Mick's interview: >B&S is sometimes called the biggest swindle of the 90's. The last band to get that >treatment was the La's ... I'd go along with that. >We never try particularly hard to do something new. Very few bands that try that sound good. I find this a bit depressing. Maybe Mick interprets 'new' more narrowly than I do. If I didn't think the band were doing anything new I wouldn't be that bothered about them. Musically, OK the ingredients have been used before, but it's an interesting enough... cake. And lyrically, I think Stuart is utterly unique. But I've said all this before. Here's that review then. Mind Your Own Business Belle and Sebastian have many strengths ? if only they'd play to them, says Maddy Costa Belle and Sebastian Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant (Jeepster) *** When it comes to pop, there are singers, guitarists, and the other, somehow anonymous musicians who make a song sound brilliant even though you've no idea what they're doing. People don't care about drummers, and generally would need to be directed by neon signs before they could pick out a bassline. It's precisely this tendency that Belle and Sebastian strive against. When they won their best newcomer Brit award in 1998, it was drummer Richard Colburn and trumpeter Mick Cooke who went on stage to collect the gong. Singer Stuart Murdoch might write the songs, but it was bassist Stuart David (recently departed to concentrate on his own band, Looper) who last year published a novel, Nalda Said. Democracy has long been Belle and Sebastian's guiding principle; the trouble is, this isn't a good thing. Their last album, 1998's The Boy with the Arab Strap, was the first to feature songs not written by Murdoch, and it was significantly weaker than its startling predecessor, If You're Feeling Sinister. While Murdoch's title track mused on the silent burden carried by "The Asian man with his love/hate affair with his racist clientele", guitarist Stevie Jackson's Chickfactor pondered, more pleasantly than thought-provokingly, over the strangeness of being interviewed by a fanzine writer. A similar disparity characterises Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant (surreally, Murdoch once saw the words scrawled on a toilet door). It's not that the songs not written by Murdoch are bad - far from it. Jackson's The Wrong Girl is a dreamy but dynamic pop song, whose catchy lyrics make it the album's most immediately memorable song. Beyond the Sunrise may be the best song cellist Isobel Campbell (who also fronts the limpid Gentle Waves) has yet written: a Hazlewood/Sinatra-style duet with the burnished richness of western movies, it is unlike anything else Belle and Sebastian have produced. That doesn't mean it's unlike anything that anyone else is producing, however: Arizona's Calexico recently released their second album of spaghetti western music; meanwhile, the charts are clogged with songs about loving the wrong people. That's the problem: of the octet, only Murdoch's writing is extraordinary. Who else currently is writing couplets like "Lisa learned a lot from putting on a blindfold when she knew she had been bad / She met another blind kid at a fancy dress, it was the best sex that she ever had"? That song, The Model, is Belle and Sebastian at their most euphoric, Murdoch's tongue-in-cheek vocals skipping over a jaunty rhythm and strings as thrilling as the sight of 3,000 balloons rising into the sky. Murdoch is renowned for his character studies of unhappy schoolgirls: debut album Tigermilk was reeling with them. But that's no preparation for The Chalet Lines, a subdued piano ballad written from the perspective of a girl who has been raped. Its simplicity is searing; the only jarring thing about it is that it's followed by a rinkydink song called Nice Day for a Sulk. The latter is a deliciously teasing answer to Belle and Sebastian's detractors, who dismiss them as mimsy moppets, but the juxtaposition is a mistake. When they concentrate on their strengths, this is an incomparable group of people. Campbell and violinist Sarah Martin's strings are increasingly wonderful; Chris Geddes grows more inventive with his use of keyboards (he brings a sultry soulfulness to Don't Leave the Lights on, Baby); just two notes from Cooke on trumpet can transform a song. In turn, the writing should be left to Murdoch. It might not be democratic, but it would mean that Belle and Sebastian's albums would be exceptional again, instead of good with flashes of breathtaking greatness. Independent on Sunday 28 May 2000 Music: Whatever you want to know - they're not telling: Reluctant indie stars Belle And Sebastian giving a press conference? Nicholas Barber can hardly believe his ears: Something weird is going on here. A gold invitation arrives in the post. You take it to a club just off Piccadilly Circus. Inside, you're met by a woman carrying a tray of complimentary beers. Funk is playing over the PA. Purple velvet curtains cover the walls. Journalists lounge on settees. A tripod mounted film camera points at a podium. And on the podium there is a long table lined with microphones, beer bottles and glasses of water. It looks for all the world like a pop group's press conference. And that's what it is. The weird part is that the pop group in question is Belle And Sebastian, and if these Glaswegians are famous for anything, it's for not wanting to be famous. They turned down support slots on tours with Radiohead, Pulp and Suede and turned down Cameron Diaz's request to write a song for one of her films. Their leader, Stuart Murdoch, refuses to do interviews. And no such thing as a conventional band photo exists. If they're feeling co-operative they'll send the press an artfully shot picture of two or three members, probably in disguise. If they're feeling less co operative the photos will feature a random selection of their friends instead. But the people who have managed to discover Belle And Sebastian adore them. The group's impeccably arranged, dreamy music and piquant, personal lyrics inspire the same devotion as The Smiths' did in the 1980s. Their fans are obsessive, in a civil sort of way, and organise regular picnics and conventions. And the word is spreading. In 1998 Belle And Sebastian's third album reached number 12 in the charts and in 1999 the band beat Steps to the Best Newcomer Brit Award. They sent only two of their eight members to attend the ceremony. Belle And Sebastian's fourth album, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, won't be in the shops until June. And yet, in the first week of May, advance copies had already been mailed to the Press, along with invitations to a question-and-answer session. Even on the way to this event I wondered if it was a hoax. But at 5.30 sharp, Belle And Sebastian trooped onto the podium and took their seats. All seven of them are present (the bassist, Stuart David, has just left the band), including the enigmatic Stuart Murdoch. What's more, they're willing to discuss everything from the new album title (graffiti spotted on a toilet cubicle door, apparently) to the time Murdoch dressed in leopard-print trousers in homage to Rod Stewart. So what about the fabled shyness? Has it occurred to them, I ask, that their refusal to adopt the conventional marketing strategies of a corporate pop group has worked as a kind of marketing strategy itself? "It's just frustrating when that overshadows the music," says Chris Geddes, the pianist. "When that's what people talk about in relation to the band. I'm not pleased that that's what we're known for." "It's just the way it's worked," adds Richard Colburn, the drummer. "It's not deliberate. Fortunately or unfortunately that's the way it's gone." Murdoch speaks up. "Sorry, what's your name again?" he asks, looking me in the eye. And then, having established who he's talking to, answers the question. "It's safe to say, I don't think about it all," he says. What is most remarkable about the press conference is how quickly Murdoch emerges as the leader. Often, he'll let the others talk for a while before delivering a definitive, sardonic answer, always making eye contact with the person who asks the question. It's difficult to reconcile someone so charismatic and candid with the image of a semi-recluse who never does interviews. "I did a few right at the start," he objects. "I just didn't really enjoy them too much. Talking about yourself is. . . you've got to be wary of that sort of stuff. But I think also we've all been frustrated by talking openly and truthfully to people and then what we've said being misinterpreted and put out of context. And the only answer is, simply, not to do interviews. And it's easy. You just don't do them. It's fine." Belle And Sebastian aren't quite so arcane after all. They are just that rarest of beasts in the pop industry: a band who prefer to go about things in their own way. "We're not particularly awkward," says Isobel Campbell, the giggling, sweetly nervous cellist. "We're just not puppets. There's a huge difference." The group started life in 1996 when Richard Colburn was studying music business administration at Glasgow's Stow College, and a course project required the students to produce 1000 copies of a single. Colburn brought in a demo made by his friends, the two Stuarts. The students were so impressed that they manufactured a whole album: a thousand vinyl copies of Belle And Sebastian's debut, Tigermilk, were duly pressed. Before it was re- released on CD last year, those original pressings had been changing hands for up to pounds 300 each. The band came into being, then, as "a college experiment". There was never any plan to conquer the world, let alone to win a Brit. Now that stardom is forcing its attentions on Belle And Sebastian, they're determined to move at their own pace - an attitude which seems all the more admirable when you see how easily they could have played the pop star game. I'd probably advise against the short-sleeve shirt and tartan tie combination, but there's no doubt that Murdoch is unusually handsome, with a jawline and cheekbones which many more publicity-hungry wannabes would swap their guitars for. Isobel Campbell, too, with her blonde pony tail, sparkling eyes and radiant smile, could replace Britney Spears on a few teenagers' walls if she were so inclined. She isn't. On the other hand, Belle and Sebastian aren't completely afraid of fame. Several of their seemingly perverse decisions - such as the meagre turn- out at the Brits - were actually motivated by practicalities and economics. The resolution not to support some big name bands on tour is another example. "Just logistics, actually," says Colburn. "Quite a lot of the times it happened it was overseas, so it just cost too much to do it. It was nothing to do with the bands in question. It just wasn't possible financially." Campbell offers her own point of view. "You know, it's just like, you don't. . . we're rushed off. . . we don't get. . . our soundchecks are, you know, legendary. There's a lot of things to do, we don't have samples or that. So our concerts would be. . . even worse. But I don't know, I can only talk for myself, but we were never into courting too much stuff anyway, so. . . I suppose if someone we loved asked us we might do it." So there you have it. Belle And Sebastian really are trying to communicate with the public. But in the end, it might be better if they let their music do the talking. Belle and Sebastian IT's cool when a band knows that they're so good, they can dare people to like them. Case in point: Glaswegian popsters Belle and Sebastian. (1) Frontman Stuart Murdoch has never done an interview. (2)He grants his inferior sidepeople a couple of awful tracks per CD (see "Beyond the Sunrise" here). (3) He's usually as wispy as a drooled-on zwieback forgotten under a high chair. You'll gladly suffer, though, because the reward is so great. Belle and Sebastian's songs are diary pages from an asthmatic camper who spent the summer with a magnifying glass and a broken heart. just got the new ida record (over a month early... ida fans, wonder how...) ... it's gorgeous! i just want to tell everyone that this is gorgeous, wow, i love it. and the magnetic fields "holiday" is terrific, too. how come no one is commenting on the geometrid? for instance, there's far less spoken word here, which is not good, but far more lovely singing, which is great. sorry to clog up everyone's email bins with locality rubbish, but I couldn't let the mentions of pennsylvania/new jersey/delaware meet-ups go without me putting my two lurker cents in, since I'm stuck in delaware for the summer. I'd love to go and do whatever it is that is done at these meet-ups, but since I'm carless I'd have to beg for a ride, and I certaintly wouldn't do that. er, wait.
