Hello I'm just out of nursery, beaming with pictures, and I thought I'd dip my toe in the water to see how all you cats are. So how are all you cats? I'm quite well, thank you, drinking coffee and covered in wallpaper paste. I subscribed to Sinister ages ago, back in 1997, when, as the older among you will recall, the summers seemed to last forever. Hot topics then were "Who is Elvis?", "Where'll Fakers get to in the charts?" and "Is Betamax better than VHS?". I posted a few times, mainly about Vince Guaraldi and sweet shops that display sweet jars in the window. But then emails started to bring worrying news ("your story on what you did over the summer was due in two weeks ago, and you will fail very soon") so I unsubscribed and took to my bed. So can I introduce myself? I'm Mouche, and I live in Kilwinning, which is on the west coast of Scotland. I haven't lived here for ages, but I came home trailing balloons a few weeks ago. I was struck by two things when I came back: a) the abnormal percentage of people under 40 who use walking sticks 'round here, and b) the way it always kind of smells of frying sausages. I needed salvation and fun, so I reached out for sweet sweet sinister. You know when you're on a bus and there's a kid in front of you, leaning back over the chair desperate to make eye contact? I was in a benevolent mood today, I was chatting to the kid, trying not to stare at his little icicled snotters and stuff. And things were going well, till he burped (with some force) right at me. I was dizzy with strained carrots for about fifteen minutes after. This is a cautionary tale. It was nice when I came home though. When I got off the bus, the driver said "cheers, Matthew," and even though I'm not called Matthew, I didn't complain. In fact, I was secretly chuffed to be mistaken for one of the apostles. Do bus journey stories qualify as B&S content? Is it borderline? I know that there are quite a few Nick Drake fans on the list, and this Thursday night at 10pm (tonight, roughly 7 hours from now)Triple J are doing a J-File on him. YEah! Shame on Mick Cooke for using the list to promote his side-project... ...So I went to the Amphetameanies gig and I thought it was GRATE! Sorry I had to leave early to get a train. Mick - rudeboy dancing not too convincing - you've gotta BOUNCE y'know. Does "Ten times less than BombSKAre" count as an entry for the What's The Weight competition? I fancy Isobel too. Big backside and everything. Obligatory in-depth review of FLAPPYCLAPPYFLAPS: It's really good. Very glad people are giving large props to Lambchop. Nixon is the best album I bought this year (sorry B&S) - check out "The Man Who Loved Beer" on "How I Quit Smoking" for sheer brilliantness. Sinister: it's very quiet in here...

hey, why is it so quiet? i think someone said about the uni students have gone back home for the summer, so that's why it's only the tech heads and bedroom saddo devotees that's left.....so it's gonna be like this until late september? oh well..... that means i'll be a student then too. uh oh. i keep think that it's gonna be ages until i hit the streets of glasgow/stirling (delete as to which one i actually get accepted to), but in reality, it's only a couple of months. crumbs.* i think that sarah gets terribly overlooked too. i met her at the looper gig at king tuts a couple of weeks ago, and she is a lovely girl, and i think that Isobel gets too much attention. maybe that's why she's filled out, all the attention has got to her and she's gonna keep on expanding forever and ever and ever and ever until P!O!P! she explodes......~giggle~ nah, that's not fair, i'm actually a bit jealous of isobel, i'd like to be ale to sing like her and be able to apply eyeliner as perfectly as she does, grr.... i watched Glastonbury on telly. hmm, so-so,.........except for darn macy "spawn of the devil" gray, she should be banned. maybe that's what her backing group are called, The ShoodBe Band.......i don't like her, you might've guessed. i'm sorry, but a voice like that should've been used as a form of torture, not *ahem*, "entertainment".....and david gray too....though i do seem to like his babylon song (sorry, that's bad!) but his voice is all gravely like big-sis macy's........must be a thing about the gray family, they all have dodgy scratchy voices... ooh, t in the park is less than 2 weeks away!! i have never been to a festival before, so it could all go brilliantly or terribly, depending on the weather and what i bring and whether i actually meet up with my friends.....btw, if any of you wanna buy a day pass for the sunday at titp, then email me at amy_jackson0(a)tinyworld.co.uk and offer me some money and maybe, just maybe i can sell it to you. sorry, that was list abuse.........oops. well, better go, i think my time is up... toodle pip, amy xxx * have been watching Dangermouse recently, hence use of Penfold-speak. i apologise. the review below makes a lot of the Smiths connection, and while it's a bit of a dis-service, first-hand stories of Stuart strumming/singing Smiths/Go-Betweens songs around a bonfire at Ocean Beach during his visit to San Francisco two weeks ago corroborate 'em, in the nicest way. but didn't we already know that? http://www.salon.com/ent/music/review/2000/06/27/belle/index.html By Carlene Bauer June 27, 2000 | "Nobody writes them like they used to, so it may as well be me," sang Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch on the band's first proper record, "If You're Feeling Sinister" (1997). He delivered the line with a modest shrug, but for some listeners -- mainly grown-up boys and girls who still took solace in Smiths records -- it sounded like a manifesto. Murdoch himself could have been the subject of a song off the Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead" -- a church janitor who likes to wear silver trousers. And his seven other bandmates from Glasgow, Scotland, also seemed to know what Morrissey and Marr knew back in the 1980s: that even if your pimples clear up and your braces come off, the world can still pinch like the wrong shoes. With such lilting anatomies of melancholy as "Lazy Line Painter Jane" and "Stars of Track and Field," Belle & Sebastian made a virtue of that sort of wallflower wit. On "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant," the band's fourth record, strings, flutes and trumpets filigree pristine melodies. The result, as on their earlier albums, has all the rock 'n' roll kick of a teacup rattle. But that beloved wit is rare: Murdoch and the band seem tired of consoling with tragicomic parables of boys who need to put the book back on the shelf and girls who have split ends and VD. They almost sound determined not to be the poster children for unforgivably fey sensitivity -- the role they played in the film "High Fidelity," in which a concave-chested record store employee was mercilessly razzed for listening to one of their records. Instead, the album features an "issue" song ("The Chalet Lines," about a girl who's been raped). And Murdoch's given up the winking references to dirty dreams for sex itself, a development reinforced by the sinuous, suggestive string section of "Don't Leave the Light on Baby." Like the nine other compositions, both songs are slow of tempo and devoid of the irony and insouciance that made Belle & Sebastian semi-famous among record store employees and their friends. For the first few spins, the new angle makes for an infuriatingly soporific and chilly listen. Which isn't surprising. The last full length, "The Boy With the Arab Strap," found the band in a rambling, diffident mood, unwilling to deliver -- as they'd done on "Tigermilk" (the actual debut record reissued last year), "Sinister" and several EPs -- instantly charming songs that were as wry and flushed with feeling as a just-confessed crush. But "Fold Your Hands," with arrangements that are less music-box cutesy and more considered in their use of retro touches, is again a more polished attempt at ditching their rep as pent-up and way too precious. The most affecting numbers -- "I Fought in a War," "The Model," "There's Too Much Love" and "Women's Realm" -- are all elegant, torchy songs that temper regret and befuddlement with resolve. They're rather grown-up, and they're all Murdoch's doing. The songs written by the other members of the band don't fare so well. The music for cellist/vocalist Isobel Campbell's "Beyond the Sunrise," is a lovely exercise in eerie acoustics, but her borderline hokey lyrics put wayward women in soft-focus ("Sir, come to me and I will keep you warm/Taste hope in my skin and faith with the dawn"). Coming from baby-voiced Campbell, the words just sound sentimental and naive. And violinist Sarah Martin's first contribution, "Waiting for the Moon to Rise," is pretty, but it's basically just a standard folk-pop ballad about longing. There is nothing wide-eyed or ordinary about Murdoch's "Women's Realm," a serenade to a girl who'd rather hide out in a train station with a flashlight and homemaker magazines than face the world. Murdoch's choirboy tenor pipes along, agile as a flute, as he moves through Glasgow, down silent streets, along the river and over to an empty dance hall where he dreams about "a boy, a girl, a rendezvous." He's unsentimental about their prospects, but not hopeless. "Are you coming or are you not?" he demands. "There is nothing that would sort you out/There's nothing I could say or do/You're going to crash, I'll set the bails in front of you." It's a new tenderness for the band, a state of grace achieved without cheek or irreverence. Chiao, I suppose I ought to introduce myself. My name is Earl Sheridan d'Orange III, and I live in a converted castle above a shop in Greenwich. The shop is called 'Interiors' and stocks the sort of high-class fibreglass reproduction fireplaces which are in such demand in a well-heeled neighbourhood like what this one is. I once saved a small child from drowning. It was nothing really, I just took my hand off the back of his head and let him finish his soup. Philanthropic, I guess you could call me. Yes. Many a time and oft I've espied a vagrant and, tossing him a Dime, bade him: 'Eat this, poor serf.' They are darlings, some of them, but oh! the smell. Pardon me, but if I left the house without my Tiffany's Eau d', I would feel practically naked. Being rich isn't all about limousines and getting blowjobs from Zara Phillips. (Incidently, it was I who requested she have her tongue pierced.) There's the responsibility, the heavy, crushing burden of superiority. One would hardly expect you to understand, but really, one must always behave with such... dignity. Honestly, it's a dreadful bore. How I long for the carefree life of the lower classes. The freedom to use prepositions to end sentences with. Navigating a push-chair through the double doors at 'Poundstretcher'. A cheery can of Special Brew and a park bench. The constant scrimping and saving. It gives one such... purpose. A far cry from those dreary cocktail parties and (I wince to say it) movie premieres. When I graduated from Eton, with a 2.2 in Applied Woodwork, I hardly would have believed I'd be where I am today. Indeed, as I said to the CEO on my first day at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; 'Are you sure I'm qualified to be Financial Director?' He just smiled and carried on talking about my father. My photograph usually appears in Tatler. And I suppose that's what I love about Belle and Sebastian. I'm rich and you're all as poor as, well... as little church mice. And yet there is something in the soaring beauty of a song like 'Beyond The Sunrise' which unites us. Briefly, perhaps, for one must have one's standards, but in that moment we are almost... equal. Sinister: i'm soo gay i'm dating women again...

man...i had an interesting weekend. it was gay pride here...and it took over the city. went to vaseline night at the elmo...i've now seen everything one can do with a watermelon. it was one of those situations when you wake up the next morning and think that you'd just had too much to drink and it couldn't possibly have happened. but, a friend of mine confirmed that i really did see it, and that i'd had too much to drink. i also remember a black balloon that was shaped like a...nevermind, you don't need to know about that one. saturday was a bust as there were torrential downpours...it was raining cats dogs and frogs all day and night. i saw a spanish drag show that night, all costumes look better when there are feathers involved.
