So yes, i don;t write for a long time, then i write a little bit in response to a months worth of stuff. is that ok? first: HELLO!!! WHAT'S WRONG WITH RUVI? Nothing really, except for talking a lode of cack about necrophelia and pretty girls vs. smart girls...Ruvi is pretty Rad. yes, his first post about square-dancing was NEARLY PROUSTIAN. only much shorter. significantly shorter. he brought up sylvia plath who at least had the guts to stick her head in the oven unlike that dreadful elizabeth smart woman who lived forever and ever and wrote terrible books. the best thing about sylvia plath so far is that talk of her compelled jillian locke to post! rah! >Pinefox asked: Is it true, by the way, that Pynchonians just don't like Salinger? yes. The Dave Matthews Band is bad like Israeli Trance. boo! did anyone else find that the new baxendale joint is like a kind of anthem for a new tomorrow? a mission statement even...a kind of flashlight of hope? no? sorry. someone didn't like physicists. i take great umbrage at this statement since a) one of my best friends is in physics b) my girlfriend is also in physics. and they are nice people and not at all creepy or stupid or lax or anything, to be frank they're probably acres cooler than you, so there! of course me and the rest of the young barthesians in the wanky semiotics dept. find anything remotely sciency to be mind-bendingly exotic so maybe i look at physics with rose coloured glasses or something. On the subject of Charleston and pretty phones, here I am. I do not live in Charleston, NC---I'm deeply sorry, but I will have to miss that picnic as I live on the opposite side of the United States of America. Isn't Charleston a dance? I think I've always wanted to learn how to. Also, SCAD. it's a lovely acronym, and the school sounds interesting. When you mentioned all the nifty girls it caught my eye---maybe the nifty-ness would rub off if i journeyed to Savannah, Georgia from my plaid perch here in California. To someone who said they have a pretty new phone (i pressed delete before I was aware of the sender), I wish I could call and cheer you up but these (insert swear word here) calls cost so much money and these (insert another swear word) phone companies rip everyone off. The world would be a much happier place, if you could just pick up the phone and dial and perhaps make a new friend from anywhere. The smoking quit thing isn't going quite as planned. Too many nights in smokey, drinky venues. Right, quick thing about whats going on. Went to an indie night a week last monday with this girl I'm pals with called Sara. Had an amazing time, bumped into these blokes who knew me (one of whom I couldn't remember even though he knew every detail about me.). A fight broke out, and people got arsy, and indie boys burst into tears. People took drugs, and I played the game of being "no dear, don't fall up the stairs, you need a breath of fresh air, that would help" Oh, and saw this bloke there who works at the bookshop and looks like Stuart David. Don't know his name, but was suprised. Went to see El Hombre Trajeado, Kaito, and Sputniks Down last Thursday. Got a bit drunk and then proceeded to chat to Sputniks Down and ask why the hell they didn't leave the cosy duvet of glasgow more often. See? we don't bite. Also discovered, that although I am going to be involved in doing some sort of fanzine thing with my uni indie society (which has a crap name) I'm going to do a Murdoch (no, not literally you dirty thinkers) and I'm refusing to do interviews cos I needlessly make a prat of myself and go all gushy and gruppie- like. And you know, I'm not good at pretending to be cool like you lot and sophisticated. I'll stick to the drinking instead. Much more becoming when I start talking bullplops. Saw that little Stuart David lookalike man again. Weekend, well, you don't want to know. Oh, went for a coffee with a mate and discussed stuff that I'm not going to tell you, and resisted H+M with my switch card. Then last night, saw that little Stuart David man again at a hip hop drum'n'bass night. Decided to nickname him the little white rabbit. As in Alice In Wonderland. Cos everywhere I go, he just pops up and runs away. He seems to be a sign I think. A sign that I'm going to have fun. It was odd. It was this private party and this friend of a friend had hired it for his birthday. Saw people again who knew me. Its always the sort of vague knowing, rather than pally knowing. If you know what I mean. They know me from first year. I think most of campus did. Anyway, got drunk, moral: aftershock is ace but evil, then me and my pal wandered up stairs to see what was going on there. Very decadent in a kewl way, Miss Scarlet would surely cream her pants with joy. It looked like it would fit in with her website. Anyway, theres all these people sitting there looking like, you know, intent and stuff and interested. Nodding heads, brows furrowed with understanding and thoughtfulness in a arty bohemian way. And this music coming from the corner. Me and my pal stood looking perplexed round the room. This bloke spotted me who complimented me on my t shirt when I was at Sputniks Down gig and gave me a nod. And this music. it was like some sort of new age jazz keyboard playing. And she and I, having danced and boogied like chickens (*apparently*) to drum'n'bass and garage and whatever else have you; stood, perplexed. We noticed all this, and neither of us could control the laughter that burst forthwith from our inconsiderate mouths. It was like a blimin' funeral! Also discovered that screw Glasgow, man, we have our local indie "talent" (exception of Kaito who are crap and wannabe Elastica or Sleeper and even sang one very bis esque song that I decided to sing along to, cos I'm cool like that.) working for us on campus. Stephen Pastel in John Smiths (R.I.P)? Pah ha! we don't even have to leave the campus without having local indie types serving us. I've been wanting to write here for the past week, but I couldn't be arsed and I've got an attitude problem towards being arsed. I think I am maybe a little too late for the Plath/Hughes discussion, not too bad, as I don't really know anything about them, but I thought this bit was lovely, especially for you artistic sinister types: Ted Hughes's Poetry in the Making It is better to call it an assembly of living parts moved by a single spirit. The living parts are the words, the images, the rhythms. The spirit is the life which inhabits them when they all work together. It is impossible to say which comes first, parts or spirit. But if any of the part are dead... if any of the words, or images or rhythms do not jump to life as you read them... then the creature is going to be maimed and the spirit sickly. So, as a poet, you have to make sure that all those parts over which you have control, the words and rhythms and images are alive. That is where the difficulties begin. Yet the rules, to begin with, are very simple. Words that live are those which we hear, like "click" or "chuckle", or which we see, like "freckled" or "veined", or which we taste, like "vinegar" or "sugar", or touch, like "prickle" or "oily", or smell, like "tar" or "onion". Words which belong directly to one of the five sense. Or words which act and seem to use their muscles, like "flick" or "balance". But immediately things become more difficult. "Click" not only gives you a sound, it gives you the notion of a sharp movement...such as your tongue makes in saying "click". It also gives you the feel of something light and brittle, like a snapping twig. Heavy things do not click, nor do soft bendable ones. In the same way, tar not only smells strongly. It is sticky to touch, with a particular thick and choking stickiness. Also it moves, when it is soft, like a black snake, and has a beautiful black gloss. So it is with most words. They belong to several of the senses at once, as if each one had eyes, ears and tongue, or ears and fingers and a body to move with. It is this little goblin in a word which is its life and its poetry, and it is this goblin which the poet has to have under control. Marybeth wrote: 2. I did a sonnet about shopping for my first bra with Grandma at the Sears in Michigan. There's something really tacky yet memorable about lingerie section in department stores. I think Stuart got it perfectly with one of my favourite B&S lines, 'start in lingerie, and Doris is your supervisor'. Nightmares of tan underpants that go up to one's chin...that's why I am so glad Sinister chose Red Underwear as the offical celebration colour. I think The Boy G and Erica should download 'No Means No' by Canadian popstar Ricky J. I can picture them dancing to it. The Peacock also wrote to the list, intercepted. I should slap you Peacock, but you might like that. Anyways, I'll try and persuade the 'pussy boys' but I'm not sure. I think they are mostly confused. So there is the picture of the two of you together, and clearly, that's THE PEACOCK. But is that Stuart David, shrouded in darkness? I should know my beloved's face, but..it's...all...so...hazy. Stuart David could be locked in your basement for all I know,Peacock. I wonder who's behind this evil Murdoch plot, getting everyone excited for a non-existant gig in hopes of causing rage towards fair, gentle Struan. CONSPIRACY!! I was excitedly hoping it was archenemy Alasdair Gray, prancing around in a tower with a feathered masque and cape while Struan is locked in a snow-globe, slender fingers pressed against the glass, but apparently Alasdair Gray is actually quite lovely. Maybe it's this Evil-Bob character? Dear sinistahs Hope this finds you all in fine fettle. Im in the finest of fettles that could be and there is a very sound and fine reason for this fine state of fettleness that I have found myself in. You see I am now on my third day of work experience at the crawford art gallery here in Cork. I tell you it is the easiest of jobs and I cant believe that people get paid for doing that. I can waltz in there at 1030 drink as much tea coffee or hot chocolate as I wish and then begin work with the other loafers at quarter past eleven. Work generally consists of moving boxes and paintings from one place to another and generally back again. This afternoon after seeing various artists I was put minding the Contemporary Gallery, which consisted of me, reading for two and a half hours and every so often ogling the French students that were wondering around. I finished Sophies World today whilst minding the gallery and man alive was that a good book. I heard it once described as a childrens book. I couldnt see how a child (apart from the manchild that I am growing into as each day passes) could make an ounce of sense from that book. (Perhaps it is just Irish kids). I came out of that book educated and trying to figure out whether I was in a book or notam I just the figment of someone on sinisters imaginationit that someone making me write this very sentence nowhoneys brain perhaps. Okay I believe it is content time. Who are theyare they really here. Well they are rather smashing and I would love to have bumped into Isobel in the toilets, her first question no doubt would be why are you in the ladies and my first answer would probably be a drunken mistake (both the reason and the response), the set sounded quite spiffing with legal man live catching my eye. Sinister: Sinister Junios Reporter reporting for duty.

The Scene: John McIntyre Hall, instruments strewn across the stage: Wurlitzer; opaque black electric guitar; transparent bass; blond electro-coustic with a turtle shell scratch-plate; drums (drums are just drums arent they); piano; cello (lovely instrument); and violin. The pasty-faced vegan geeks sit cross-legged abreast the tabernacle, where the angelic chimings of Belle and Sebastian is sacrificed for the next 45 minutes. There they come, look. Its them. Stuart. Richie. Stevie. Wee Chris. Surly Isobel. Lovely Sarah. Oh my God, a Maisonette? Surely not Legal Man live. Hmmm. Worried look adorns the face of young Howie. Stuart scurries about collecting lyric sheets as the Belles play an Introductory ditty. Low melodic shuffling chords hide behind the irascible drawl of Stevies harmonica solo. One-and-a-half minutes of aural egg-shells; Stuart still looking fer tit-bits. He steps to the microphone, mumbles something about opening the floor for questions. Stuart, what are the issues? Hmm. Ahh. Well. Thats a rather boring question, in that it means I have to think, pines Struan. You tell me the issues and Ill tell you my attitude towards them, he jests. Murdoch moves for the piano, Sarah steps to the fore adjusting the lead microphone so as to allow the audience to here her violin. Theres a portrait *Clunk* in a backroom, which I keep *Clunk* for days *Clunk* Stops. Are you about finished moving that? Laughter implores the room. Stevie breaks into a smile; or, rather, a smile breaks into Stevie. Back to the song. Theres a portrait Its glorious. Euphony abounds as the angel ascends to a sonorous heaven. Epiphany lies dormant, too limp a word to describe Murdochs iridescent genius. Much shuffling of people. Positions assumed; instruments swapped: theyre ready. I envisage the band as a sort of amorphous cosmic space-jazz septuplet. Na, not really. He said: I envisage the band as some sort of building that still has its scaffolding up and youre all not allowed in yet but somehow youve broken in. Well arrange some coupon system so you can come back and see us when weve practised a little, jokes Murdoch. COUPONS? You give me COUPONS? jests Geddes. They dont get the reference, says Murdoch. We dont get the reference. Needless to say that I Fought in a War remains a wholesale Love song as well as love song: and, thus, fantastic if a bit obvious. Theres Too Much Love, though (the song Nick Dastoor described as the typical B&S sound that theyve been driving toward) is frenetic and ecstatic. Vintage Belle and Sebastian augmented by outstanding performances all round. My God, this GIG was good. Missed Bowlie: sad. Stuart introduces the next track as a song that was going to be on the soundtrack that theyre recording. However, the director didnt like it so it probably wont see light of day fer a while. Murdoch was going to detail the story of the film (as the song was scheduled to be at the end of the film) but he realised that that would give away the ending. Aww. Centred around a duopoly of riffs: curt but skewed LLPJ riff played out over and over for 3 bars then raved up for the fourth. Murdochs back at his lyrical best, poetic (but not flowery) lyrics which retain coherency and a sense of knowing what they want to say (Cf. Womens Realm, The Model). The story is told from the view of an ageing director/actor who has sold out. Take another tired story make it into another boring movie. However, the protagonist redeems himself by returning to the smaller stage, the theatre. The whole sell-out/integrity of art theme centred lyric delivered against a poppy (sorry, loose description) tune. Then a pretty straight version of The Wrong Girl, which is no preparation for what comes next. Sympathy For The Devil (nee a Rolling Stones song). You do it, I dont want to sing. Well, I would sing but I want to concentrate on the guitar opines Stevie. Ahh, go on. But I want to be Mick. I cant be Keith and Mick at the same time. Rapturous laughter. Then they play it and it rocks. Sorry, it BelleandSebastians. Its grate. Capital GRATE. Stevie jokes his way through imitation Mick dancing and pointing augmenting this performance by singing the last verse in a faux-Mick falsetto. They pulled it off. Despite the fact it was a shambles, if you know what I mean. This song leaks into Legal Man, the maisonettes trying their hardest to contain their inner-laughter. The girls seem unenthusiastic but the song-that-should-be-a-shambles-live is not: its Legal Man it makes you want to dance. It makes you want to sing. It makes you want to live. It makes you want Belle and Sebastian. It makes it all make sense. Well, maybe not. Ahem. Settles. Thats it. Damn, no space to deconstruct what it all means Sinister Junior Reporter, David Howie.
