Hello all, I am still trying to recover, a) from seeing Struan and pals live, in the flesh, for real, less than 100 metres from my distant, distant circle seat at the RAH, b) from my seething jealousy of all those who managed to get into the standing area down at the front, (and more so of those who managed to meet them at various other gigs) and c) from my disappointment at missing the meetup before hand. Grrrrrrrrrrr. Nonetheless I was first into the bar on our level (alcoholic? me?), and managed to pick up a rather nifty set of badges from the cawkney merchandisers, and the posters. Oooh, the posters. Not quite up to the Tigermilk poster I saw in a club once (man sized, although not particularly man shaped), but they'll do :) I would also like to take this opportunity to apologise to the Irish girl sitting next to me (Circle row 2, X block, seat 110ish) should she receive Sinister for my friend's loud and very poor imitation Irish accent. She meant no harm, and was mimicing the guy on the door, not you. She is suitably embarassed... I was wondering whether anyone who was down the front at the very start (7.30 - 8ish) could shed some light on the first support act - they did an _interesting_ cover of Legal Man, albeit without singing. We suspected a bunch of band members arsing around for the over-enthusiastic people that arrived early, but couldn't see anyone properly (due to what looked like comical Harry Enfield scouser wigs), only hear Scots accents. Again, we couldn't make out what they said when they explained themselves due to the terrible accoustics... Oh, and Lazy Line Painter Jane. Woooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww. Wow. I'm going to stop now, before I get carried away... the archetypal comedian who plays a character which is almost pretty much themselves but with dialogue not written by them but by someone else is tony hancock. anyone who likes comedians of this sort should check him out. the half-hours and the films he was in. some people think that the stuff that wasn't written by gaulton and simpson is much less funnier. but it's still really very funny. the composer and conductor of the incidental music [for the 'hancock's half hour's] was wally stott. he arranged a lot of scott walker's solo albums. he also changed his sex. from a man to a woman. I saw belle and sebastian in glasgow but didn't post. then. I'll just mention it now: it really was very good. I'm glad it happened. it was worth it. I feel better because of it. I met some nice people at the picnic. but I was tired. so people might think I'm rude. and maybe I am. when I'm tired. that's enough. I heard belle and sebastian on radio one but I didn't post. then. I'll just mention it now: it really was very good. et cetera. I do like the rhythmic talking in 'shoot the sexual athlete' very much. but I was tired. enough again. I met a nice man from chicago at the weekend. after almost mistakenly attending 'an evening of guitar music' at hynland's church. as I say: he was nice. and we talked about music for a while. because I like some music from chicago. and so did he. I highlighted some areas of my musical ignorance. and, with his ball-point pen and my used underground ticket, he tried his best to set out a list of nice music to hear which would also resolve some of these gaps in knowledge. I offered to compile and send him a list of nice buildings he should see. he was a nice man. he had a beard. and a beret. also at the weekend: I found out that a friend from my university course has signed himself and me up to go to the czech republic next year. for studying purposes. it was going to be prague originally. but now he says 'brno'. not knowing anything about that country. I don't know if there's much difference between the two. except, obviously, the consonant to vowel ratio. no-one is likely to recall my last post. but I do. and I'm feeling indulgent. I mentioned spying people who looked like bill wells and chris geddes at the steve malkmus show at the q.m.u. and I mentioned the support band. lonecop. and their bow-wielding singing guy. well. he gets around. because. I went to see damon and naomi at king tut's. I never did actually *see* either damon or naomi. BUT. I *did* see lonecop's bow-wielding singing guy at the bar. at one point. when I woke up. briefly. THEN. I was going to canada and I was checking in for my flight. and he walked past me. the same lonecop bow-wielding singing guy. and I just thought to myself that it was quite peculiar. and I still think that now. but it probably wasn't THAT peculiar. that you see the same people. there are probably people that I've seen a greater number of times than this guy. but, because they don't sing or wield bows for lonecop, I haven't noticed. anyhow. I got the 'playback singers' album by damon and naomi a few weeks back. following the advice of a narrow wizard. I'm sure it's probably very good. but I haven't listened to it. as yet. just now I'm reading a book called 'flatland: a romance of many dimensions'. it's very good. and I'd recommend it. if I thought there was no chance that someone might actually read it as a result and report back on how boring it is. but I enjoy it. hey! I'm going to recommend it anyhow. there is a very cheap edition in print just now. a 'thrift edition', if you like. I got my copy for the equivalent of seventy-five pence. it's certainly worth it. anyone who already HAS a copy: you have no excuse. I got the new beta band album on napster. most likely the last favour napster'll do me. I like the album. I know some people don't like the beta band much. but I know that I do. very much. but not as much. obviously. Hello, I was plinking at my pianner the other day and tried to play along to Jonathan David. I got a little carried away and ended up trying to figure out the whole song, so here's my stab at it which I also sent to Damon for the sinister pages. Hope it's vaguely (sp?) correct. I altho bought the stwokth thingle. It'th exthellent and rockth veritably! Oh shit, I've turned into Toyah Wilcocth. Help! Phew, that was both frightening AND unfunny. If anyone's going to T in the Park and wants to "hang", then please let me know. My colleague Dave was going to get our free office ticket which I used last year. Sinister: Not RAH, but Birmingham.... and stuff.....

Roight yes good morning. *Birmingham* OK well i'm sure theres lots of people sat reading their sinister posts with some vague unhappiness that everyone is having so much fun at all their gigs, but they themselves, like me, have tickets for Birmingham which it seems has been somewhat abandoned by the higher forces within Sinister. I know there wasn't going to be any sinister meet-up before the birmingham gig, but i'm afraid (this is me being threatening, please play along) that i'm not going to take no for an answer. i've got a map of birmingham in my hands now, not a proper map you understand, but one of those hand-drawn ones that shows all the buildings and tells you where the local branches of boots and m&s are.... let see... theres a massive field about half a mile away from new street station ('public open space' it calls it')... thats about it actually... not many parks in birmingham.... theres a few grassy places.... theres the cathedral if we feel like meeting up by a gravestone... ugh... also theres that place with the fountains and loads of stairs which i vaguely remember from when i was last in birmingham. any ideas people? *Leicester* Picnic on sunday right? erm...tomorrow in fact... James i was going to phone you but i've lost your number... again... i will take the guitar but i canna play it at all really... i'm guessing someone will be able to though... i have the fishyclap songbook so i guess we'll be fine.... Sinister: The Mighty RAH!

The RAH was indeed mighty and marvellous. For a start it's great venue and I now expect nothing less from any band passing through London. It was fairly awe inspiring to turn around (I was standing at the front) to see rows of people dancing the night away. Isobel's lovely dress featured the visage of Bob Dylan. Though if you were standing too far away to see it properly it looked like Belushi apparabtly. Dylan links in to- someone shouting "Judas" in the same way someone did in 1966 to Dylan when he played Manchester (though for some reason it has always been credited as happening at the RAH). In response to this Stevie did a not overly kind impression of Dylans' "I can't hear you" response. The songs were all great and yes, the cover of Everyday People at the end was unexpected. Actually I thought Theres Too Much Love was a bit weak. But then again I thought it was weak in Glasgow. Maybe they played it too early? Seeing one of the Sinister girls get on stage to sing The State I Am In was marvellous. Not sure who it was because I failed to make any of the pre-gig meet ups due top work but she sure can sing, dance and look pretty on stage. And even cajoled Stu into singing a bit of it. He couldn't remember the words too well. The was also an instrumental of Europe's "the Final Countdown" which is all you can really ask for. Oh, that and Monica Queen coming on to do a rocktastic LLPJ that reminded me of the Velvet Underground before Lou Reed decided to go shit. They were Rock and Roll. One last thing- i am sure the adverts said it was sold out weeks ago but there did seem to be quite a few empty seats right at the top. Maybe some people got a better offer or accidentally joined the not inconsiderable queue of old ladies who were about to camp with tents and everything so they could purchase Daniel O'Donnell tickets this morning? Sinister: do something risky while you can

one highlight of the RAH show: stuart throwing his precious hollow-body guitar in the air and wondering if he would catch it... ah, for those who caught that fear in his eyes for that brief second and the full-on calculation of the spin, plummet-rate. wonderful, how full of emotion the human soul can be. even more loved than a car, for that instant. second bit i appreciated: lazy line painter jane. complete with originals vocals. that woman has one *fine* voice. sinisterine fame: one sinister member sang on stage w/stuart. and yelled out 'SINISTER!' quite clearly and had a nice voice to boot. fess up - who got the honors? also, her friend danced with stuart and may have gotten a thrill himself... from head to toe: isobel's jim belushi(?) full-length. nice dress. one head fully lain across one nice body. it hung just right. closer under cover: 'everday people' cover was done ever so nicely. much better than the car adverts. was that geddes' voice that was so tuneful, on-key, and full of timbre? quite a nice little shift of roles to close up shop. on the undressy gnoll: picnic footie - monsieur murdoch booting shirtless. ah, what will the tabloids make of ye, heathen? i tire. i'm still sauced. my feet ache, my eyes are bloodshot, yet i'm still in good spirits. senor droolcup [ sold in finer establishments everywhere ] +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. it's funny that of the ten films playing on the plane from london today, one of them was a sex pistols documentary and another was sid and nancy. i think i was the sole person on the plane who watched either of them...definitely the sole person who watched both. here is a sad story: i have spent the past month rambling about in europe, and i thought it might be nice to keep some sort of journal of my travels. i am, for some reason, still working toward an art degree, so i bought a brand-new sketchbook before i left and spent a good deal of time filling it up...drawing the angels in florence and turning them into strumpets, things like that. it wasn't a very good sketchbook, but it was full of funny little drawings and a number of songs. one morning in amsterdam, aimee and i woke to find a dear irish boy crying in our room. we took him out for pancakes and ended up having a grand time with him, running around amsterdam and giggling at all of the cute boys. i found out later that not only was he absolutely lovely, but he was a sinister fellow. needless to say, i was having a ball, and on my birthday he wrote a pretty poem in my sketchbook. i think that the poem was the only pretty thing that has ever been in any of my sketchbooks, so i was very happy. i had to leave the next morning for london, and as soon as i arrived there i went to use the telephone...set my beloved sketchbook (now complete with birthday poem) on the little ledge by the phone and leaned down to get my change...and when i stood up, my sketchbook was gone. i don't know what sort of monster would up and steal a sketchbook, but it made me cry. i bought a new one, but it's empty and even when i fill it up, it won't have any pretty poems in it. the world is scary. Hello All! You know what? I just got paid. This is a fact. A fully-sealed envelope was just handed to me. Sigh of relief - house payments and all, you know. How frighteningly responsible that sounds. Moving on. . . AVOIDING WORK, AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES: Well, I'm writing to you from the gothic bowels of the ASU Admin building, huddling in my corner workroom, where I'm glad to have a monstrous copy machine throwing warmth my way. They keep this place positively arctic; I sense a corporate conspiracy, here. But then, I see a conspiracy theory in nearly everything, don't I? I'll answer that. In a word, yes. This is the land of the magic bullet, after all, and I'm afraid it's left a permanent scar on my impressionable psyche. Anyway, as I was determined to do as little as possible in the way of work today, I thought I'd drop you lot a line. WARNING: ODE TO MAGNUM Our lovely Kiwi Counterpart - Mr. Lawrence Mikkelson - made his Magnum sentiments quite clear the other day, and although I concurred privately, I will publicly take a stance: I dare anyone to put together a cogent argument against the pioneering, episodic brilliance of Magnum. Look, I mean, you have a suave detective, casual humor, mystery on the homefront (Robin Masters, of course), and a fine, exotic setting as well. Self-analysis abound. As the man said, pure genius.... and I'm of the breed who subscribes to that whole concept of "Kill your TV; Read a Book".... alright, I guess that's that. Next. IF YOU CARE TO CALL IT CONTENT. . . Well, you know, everyone's kind of put their two cents (adjust currency) in for Jonathan and David, and all that, but if you must know, I quite enjoy it. For some odd reason, no matter the arrangements or the instruments or whatever other variables you can drag up, B&S just give me a funny grin, that occassionally scares small children. (One might say it's a Sinister Grin, but it won't be me). I particularly like the sweet cutting of TYCCASI. I really do. I won't say it's a return to IYFS, because that's it's own entity, but it gives me the same warm glow of, say, Stars of Track and Field. And as for TLOAMDR, well to say it's spectacular is just a vast understatement, and I will leave it at that. Again, along with some of our other vocal listees, I have never had the privilege of hearing the live version, and if that's better - I'm interested. Now, Jonathan and David, I don't know. I'm going to have to let that one sit. And I know you will all rest much easier now. (! ! wry grin) THIS REALLY TOOK ME ONLY 15 MINUTES - I'M QUICK - REALLY I so look forward to all of tomorrow's posts, because I know they will contain concert minutiae and live verbal footage. I only hope they don't have anything to do with Isobels' ass (arse, if you like), because, frankly, I'm not really interested in Isobels' ass (again, whatever you like). I think I'm the only one in the general vicinity who has her clock set to London time so that I know exactly when the show starts. Not that I do really know, mind you. It's not like I'll have a psychic vision the moment they walk onto stage or anything, although that would be nice. I just like to fantasize! Anyway, blah blah blah. I think I have a few copies to make, now. Better push off.
