hi everyone!! it's been ages, it seems. i hope that this finds you are all splendidly happy :o) i know that i am. in recent weeks i have registered for school, begun correspondence with a very highly respected director (the fact that he's irish is just a bonus :o) had 8 job offers and lots more. i have just been having one of those weeks when things are going so well that you just float through the days....i am sort of afraid though....waiting for the other shoe to drop i s'pose. i also got to have a real telephone conversation with sinister's own chris eames!! yay!! he sounds like martin gore from depeche mode when he speaks :o) i have spent quite a lot of time thinking/talking about relationships lately. all sorts of relationships. it's funny how there are people you firmly believe will be in your life forever. it is impossible to imagine a world without them. a few weeks ago, i brought over some tapes that friends and i made a few years ago when we had a "band". we would write songs together and this one girl would sing and play them on the guitar, as well as help another girl and i convert the music in our heads to a playable piece. we had fun....it dissolved but, more sadly, so did our friendship. the singing girl jsut stopped talking to us for no reason. she used to do things like that from time to time but this time it was for months. the other girl and i remained as close as ever and, when the world trade center was attacked, i decided to send the singer a card to tell her that i loved her and that whatever was going on was not a big deal in the scheme of things. so the 3 of us were back together again....then the other girl found out that the singer was bashing us both in her online journal.....then the other girl started bashing me in her online journal....then my dad died and neither of them cared enough to acknowledge it and, for that, i will never forgive them. it's just weird. there was a time when we were together daily and now we never talk. i think that the 2 of them do but i don't think that either of them really trusts the other....and i know that one of them is constantly annoyed with the other so... listening to our songs made me sort of miss them though...well, sharon anyway...the singer i really have nothing but disdain for... weird. anyway...i'm babbling again...though surely, you know how i am by now. :o) where on earth has everyone been? ken, the rachels, dirty vicar, lara llew? ah well...my love to you all. ~stine __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hey gorgeous...s... how do you write gorgeous in plural? Ok. Anyways. Hello. I am in school right now. I just had 1,5 h of French, at level 4, which means that they talk a lot of French and all laugh about crazy grammatic faults once in a while, and I sit there thinking about Things I'd Rather Do. Today was ok, though. I've got a fecking awful cold, I feel so miserable. I was fine til yesterday, but then hell broke loose. Or, er, well, I got the sniffles. Haha. I feel so sorry for myself, haha. Ah, what a saddo I am. but what the hell. I'm hungry because I didn't have time for breakfast. I can't go to the B&S show in Stockholm (three months too young) and, er, well... ok. Dissing my life was boring. Good things is that I'm going to Miami in less than a month now, yay!! We're going to stay with my dad's girlfriend's sister and her husband. They are all quite mad, apparently. And the husband's old mum just died, ah, very sad. They do have dogs, though, and one of them are having puppies, yay number two!! It'll be nice to really GO someplace, though, the only trips I've done since, erm, 1996 when I was ten (yes, imagine that sinister people, i was at the tender age of NINE in Struan's magical year that was 1995!) has been to visit my sister in England, and those have not been holidays like this one. So I'm looking forward to it, although I'm pretty skint. I've got $84.64 or something in my Miami Savings Can. Speaking of that, Savings cans etc, all my friends have had their own accounts since they were maybe 13 or 14... am I the only person in this world to keep my money in a)My Red Plastic Shiny Hello Kitty Wallet b) My piggybank which I can't throw away because he looks so sad, and I am sentimental beyond words, hence my drawers full of porcelain kitties etc. c) My Miami Savings Can instead of having lots of plastic cards? My coolest cards are probably my library cards. Yay..? On Friday, I went to the youth club to see lots of crappy bands with 14-year-old-boys thinking they rawk. None of the bands were great, but some were ok, at least. At least, I almost got picked up by this very cute guy. Um, not a fourteen year old, more a 20 year old. He came out of the rehearsal room once in a while, then looked around the room until he saw me, stared at me, then looked away, then came and stood next to me and didn't say a word. i didn't know what to say, and by the time this had happened four or five times I was plucking up the courage, but then he disappeared and never came back. Later, Richard, who is my favourite indierock 25-year-old in the world I think and works there, told me that they had come back and were a wee bit drunk. It was a drug free event, bla bla bla. So they couldn't play, and my semi-attractive prince was lost forever. Damn. Kat will start to rehearse there next Saturday. Our own key and everything. now THAT'S responsibility! Richard attacked me with a "YOU'RE MY IDOL!" when I came to visit him and talk about some records I'd loaned from him. He had played Hit it, Raoul! four times before he went to sleep the previous night, and had played it at the youth club all day, and someone had done a remix of it. it wasn't us with a phat beat, but us with more bass, or something. i don't know. Pretty cool, though. Tonight, I'm going to a fashion show. My first. Probably my only, as well. This indie shop with hip designer clothes are having their spring collection shown at this big venue in Stockholm, and I was invited by mail, even. Proper mail, not e-mail. It felt nice. I felt important. How sad I am. By the way. I love B&S. I forget just how much, sometimes, but still, they manage to amaze me. I had only brought with me IWUTS with me when I was on my way to the bus, but as I hurried down the stairs in my building, and heard Struan's lovely voice I had to turn around and run back and get DCW, because I knew I'd want to listen to them. Ah. How great they are. That reminds me, I haven't developed the film which contains a photo of me and Stevie, when I met him and Sarah in October. He told me he made his best boyband smile, so it's bound to be a success. Also on that film, is me and Amanda in various states that day. Not states as in states in the US or something, but more like "tired in the afternoon on the bus on the way to my house" and "post-B&S-meeting and happy sitting in front of this stupid club we're too young to get into, pointing fuck you to it and all its hip kids going there" photos. Oh and I went to see Damien Rice and Josh Ritter on Sunday, February 29th. I met Damien before the show, when he signed my copy of O and made a drawing of a girl who was cold and wrote "Astrid - fresh cold air" and signed. We saw Josh Ritter then but didn't dare talk to him. The show was amazing, and cool because he played cold water and eskimo friend as one long song, in complete darkness and then when they started really SINGING in Eskimo Friend, in the end, the lights came on and it was so pretty i wanted to cry. We were seated on the fifth row so we were really happy, ah Damien. And Josh was great too, what a nice guy. After the show, most people had left and me and Amanda were standing in the lobby just talking a bit, Josh came out, and so we started talking to him. He was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met, a real gentleman. He immediately decided that me and Amanda ARE going to get in on the 18-yrs-of-age-show he's playing at the end of May. Nice. Plus he wrote "Astrid, you're the star of the North Sea, love Josh Ritter" and said he really loved my name. But then, just as I'm taking my polaroid photo with him for my photo wall at home, I hear the familiar intro of Delicate, one of Damien's songs. And yes, he's come out to play that song, on acoustic guitar for the people who were still there. Absolutely amazing. I got a lovely polaroid of him standing there playing, he doesn't even make a stupid singing face, as most concert pics contain. Lovely, lovely, lovely. And then when I went to say hi, thanks and all, he recognized me and we took a picture together. I was going for the cool, relaxed face, but when he tilted his head so his head was leaning on mine, sort of, and he put his arm around me, i once more made the THIS IS THE HAPPIEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE-smile. Like Jay, I was intrigued by the I'm A Cuckoo single. Just what are Henderson and Doyle up to nowadays? By their names, you'd expect them to have founded a TV detective agency on the west side of Glasgow; but presumably Taggart has that market all buttoned up. Even though he's dead. I was also puzzled by the photos of Stevie and Mick. "At the Usher Hall" it says, but *which* gig? 2002 or 2003? Enquiring minds want to know. You know. I have to say, though, I do like Stop, Look and Listen, even if is a bit of a musical cut-and-shut: the front half of a Simon & Garkfunkel song welded onto the back-end of something by the Shadows. When the second half kicked in, I thought: "Ah! I know this!" Later, I realised it had been the opening track at the Usher Hall gig. 2003, before you ask. Having said that, I also like The Avalanches; so what do I know? Walking around Edinburgh the other day, I spotted someone wearing the same badge as me. The Glasgow Underground one. If I'd realised sooner I'd have waggled my eyebrows in a "look, we're wearing the same badge" type of way. Sadly, I didn't. There was a rumour (I think I read it on Sinister, so it's PROBABLY TRUE) that the girl who gets up on stage to TBWTAS on Fans Only is also wandering around in Edinburgh at the moment. My friend Brian (who is a goth) occasionally does favours for the local Indie Society, and says they have a member who might be her. Wow, I'm connected to celebrity. I fainted when he told me. Honest. Talking of goths, at my local pub quiz I asked if we could have a B&S question, please sir, only this once. The next week, it got to the final round. We were behind, but might just win. The air was tense. The quizmaster said... "Looper..." "Belle and Sebastian!" I whispered to my team-mates. And I was right, of course. And we won. Free beer. Hurrah! To be fair, the quiz bloke had told everybody beforehand that there would be a B&S question somewhere in the quiz's murky depths. I am a tad suspicious of my pub quiz quizmaster. He said something on his Livejournal, which makes me think he is into BDSM. I want to join in, but I don't know how to broach the subject. My local pub is a goth pub, which makes it rather harder, because it means that all the regulars look like they enjoy dark, perverted pleasures when in reality they'd run and hide at just the sight of a whip. (all the cool kids have Livejournals now, you know. Trouble is, so do the uncool ones. The cool kids are greatly outnumbered, but I hear they're planning to fight back.) An awful lot of people out there want to question The Boy Murdoch's sexuality. And they all seem to come to my website to do it. Literally ... um ... *fives* of people reach my website by searching for stuff like "Stuart Murdoch gay", "is Stuart Murdoch gay", "who is stuart murdoch's girlfriend" and so on. There's even the occasional "mick cooke gay", too. I'm sure he isn't. Or they're not. Or something. The last time I saw Doyle, he was wandering a nightclub clutching something that looked rather like an insertable sex toy. But he isn't into BDSM either, dammit! See how confusing the whole thing is. I have to go now. Hello Sinistris and Sinistros: I decided to post today in honor of the fair Avalanche of Belle and Sebastian-ry I've been involved with today. It started simply enough: I watched the video for Legal Man on my shiny new DVD player. It's quite keen, and I greatly desire the poof-tastic and decidedly Pertwee-esque clothing worn by the Gentlemen On The Couch. Later, while I was slogging away at work, I saw someone with the same Belle and Sebastian t-shirt I got in Durham when they played there. I get upset for some reason when I see other people wearing it here. I was once ballsy (read: drunk) enough to tell a lad of about 18 at a Manitoba/Broadcast show that he had to TAKE IT OFF* when I saw he had one. Serves him right for snarking into club with booze. Kids today... Anyway. The point there was a man with that shirt at work today. Being a decent sort, I tried to make conversation as a prepared his swill. "Oh" says I "did you see their show here last Fall?" He nodded and told all about how he quite liked DCW but other recent stuff was shit. He specifically mentioned Legal Man as shit. I reeled. Other than that, work was quite awful (our concession to Elderly Employment is exactly why you don't hire the elderly for certain jobs... he's painfully slow, clearly incompetent and typically crotchety) because of George the Moron. To make up for this, I decided to go up to the local record store and buy that copy of the Legal Man 12 inch that's been beckoning for the last few months. To my surprise, they also had in I'm a Cuckoo, so I bought that as well. And I've been listening to them since. And dancing. Since I lack a partner, I've been dancing with Cyd the Stuffed Kitty, who is surprisingly good despite his lack of DDR skillz. But the jury's still out about the new single. Jew's Harps and African choirs? Uhh... Interesting, anyway. I wrote in a post a while ago that never came through. That was a pity, cause it was pretty good. In watching Fans Only, I was clearly reminded of a truth universally acknowledged, that there /had/ to have been some kickin' Catfights between Campbell and Martin round about 1999. Oh yeah. You can SEE it in the Legal Man video. I mean, can you imagine? *TAKE THAT CAMPBELL! or, MARTIN MAKES A JUDO CHOP! That was what my errant post's subject line was. Pretty good, innit? As I was discussing this with the sadly absent Laura Llew, we decided the only fit memorial to these fights were for them to be reconstruced by Jackson and Murdoch. In drag. Preferably as the video for "I'm Waking Up To Us". Band guys, if you're reading this: Take it Up! Run! I give this idea to the ages! Anyway. Enough silliness. Best Man: Brother who's getting divorced just now and doesn't like giving speeches or; Best Friend who would give a great speech but likely to take over proceedings? Feel free to email off-list. I think Wrapped Up In Books refers to Struan's insatiable appetite for pornography and what he does in WH Smiths when no one is looking. I mean you couldn't be wrapped up in the Playfair Cricket annual or Janet and John because you wouldn't be able to read the words...but books or more likely magazines...with pictures...you can argue until your blue in the face - I've made my mind up. Sinister: wrapped-up in a wrapped-up book!

hi there all! yes, it's been a while (seeing as i'm sure you haven't noticed, i thought it necessary to say that!) but i'm back! (for now!) (ah, vague bells are ringing now, aren't they? didn't there used to be a boy who used more parentheses [of various types] than you could shake a stick at?) {yes, there did!} anyway, what have i been doing? recently, getting my heart broken etc, but that's not what i'm writing to tell about. no, it's because i've got <GASP!> content! yes, something actually to do with belle & sebastian, though not our beloved boys and girl. "quoi?" you say, but the sharper among you might remember that back in the mists of time, there used to ANOTHER belle & sebastian, to wit, a young boy and his pyrenees mountain dog! and guess what? i've got it! there's this friend of mine who lives in paris, and when i went to visit her, i got her to take me all around the second-hand book-stalls looking for it, but "peine perdue". and then, yesterday, i got it in the post, from her - a vintage edition from 1965, but almost pristine! (would that be the first edition, anyone?) anyway, so, despite my very halting french, i finished it earlier ce soir (okay, i'm doing the french schtick a little thick, aren't i? but i've been going completely francophile again: it's just been air, francoise hardy, cyann and ben and the extremely cute b&s serge gainsbourg cover from a frrrrrench radio-session that the lovely anna higgins sent me on a wonderful mix - hear isobel singing all aggressively, and then trying to apologise for her french afterwards, while being completely ignored by the dj! i'm even working on descartes at the moment!) and it's really really lovely! (easy to read too - after all, it's a children's book!) already on page 3, they mention a fox! and "belle" is blonde, and huge, and keeps wagging her tail! sebastian is scrawny and vulnerable, but okay, he's only 6 years old and has black hair. okay, i THINK that counts as content! so then i hope i'm entitled to add that i think you should all check out the february 29th project on http://www.friendsoftheheroes.co.uk. there's been some really nice entries (i would say "lovely", but a quick review of the above has convinced me that i've rather overused that already!). and we're still looking for people to contribute - that means YOU! go on, be a sport! oh well, back into my (fox)hole! but before i go: i'm so impressed by the amount of musical activity happening with you all! good luck to everyone with a band! and those travelling too! enjoy, and go safely!
