Hello Sinister, So, Ive been lurking around these parts a while. Ive not been away, I just havent had much to say. And thats not to say I do have something exciting to share with you now, in case anyone was getting their hopes up unduly there. Sorry. I just saw this little quote in the Times the other day and thought of you. My worst festival experience was travelling on an overnight rockers bus from Scotland to see Deep Purple at Knebworth in 1984. I was 15. The only seat was at the back with the stinking denim-and-leather brigade. I got to sleep, bolt upright, between two heavies. I woke up with one of their tongues in my ear Stuart Murdoch, of Belle & Sebastian. Eh? Anyway, Im not going to whinge about the fact that the free gig in Glasgow is two days before the scariest exams of my life so far and that I wont be able to go. Because if all goes to plan, I should be seeing them at Glastonbury instead. But still. A free gig! In Glasgow! With Camera Obscura too! How cruelly fate times these things sometimes. A-ha!! How's it going children? So, we've all survived the official most miserable day of the year without too many scrapes, I hope. It couldn't have been that miserable, really, though, because the news was covering this piece of news all day and so there can't be that much suffering going on in the world or silly young men wearing inappropriate clothings to parties just now. So how are all of you guys? Were you miserable in January? Are you happy? Is February going to bring some much needed joy? February is a strange month for me, the tiresome twilight of Winter mixed with the anticipation of March and the brighter evenings. Like the final mile of a marathon, you're tired, in your head you can already feel the jubilation of finishing the race, but you still have that final mile to run. I have started going to the gym lately, it was something that I thought a couple of years back I would never do. Just because it looked so boring. And my God! It was very boring. The first time I went I got on the treadmill and I was like, damn, people pay money to do this??? And then I remembered I had the iPod and suddenly hey yeahhh!! I put on loneliness of the middle distance runner and then time just flies by, I've set the thing to play just all B+S songs and I think I got through 4 songs, and then to the cycling machine, I was really tired by the end of a couple of goes but thought, okay, one last song and I'll stop. And it was Paranoid Android by Radiohead!!! It was like 7 minutes long!! If I didn't have music playing, or hadn't swigged a quarter of a bottle of whiskey in the locker room, I wouldn't have made it, but now I have to carry on until the end of the song. It was Painful!! I mean, it's painful enough without Thom Yorke wailing about The Squealing!! The Panic!! The Vomit!!!! The whiskey was really working hard by then. But then the guitar bit came and I knew there was only 30 seconds more to go, and if Johnny Greenwood can make 6 little strings make crazy noises for 30 seconds I can at least push a two little pedals round and round to make the distance LED thing go from 4.5 to 4.6! And in the end I made it. And now my thigh muscles are tremendous. Tired now x Ken P.S. Congratulations to Belle and Sebastian for being voted as the Best Scottish Band of all time! Sinister: elvis on the radio, steel guitar in my soul

Last night I saw The Clonefox. I was at this charidee event for people who had been washed away by the big wave. Your old friend Paula Cullen Booze Explosion's band The Chalets were playing, my main reason for going, even if I am not convinced by their new 80s Slapper makeover. Still and all, they played an impressively rocktastic set. There were other bands on the bill, and one of them was The Clonefox. This was not actually the name he went under, but he looked and dressed so like The Truefox that I was wondering if maybe he had flown over to Ireland to help raise money for victims of the big wave. Then I realised that this could not actually be the case - for he was using a laptop to assist in the creation of his sweet music. So he must be some local fellow. His name turned out to actually be Joe Chester. I was interested enough by his music to now mind seeing him again in the future, so maybe you too might like to check him out, if you are local. The other band I saw did not have current or former member of this mailing list in their line-up, or a clone of one, but they were called 8-Ball and proved yet again that the days of shoegazing have started to come back. This is a good thing. Meanwhile, my fair consort and I have spotted a shared gap in our busy schedules - the first weekend in February. We are thinking of making a flying visit to somewhere exciting... Cork or Glasgow, I reckon. Watch out if you live in either of those towns. Sinister: Indie movies weekend....

Dear Sinners.... Hi everyone!!! Here I am after what I would call the "indie movies weekend"... It all started with Welcome to Dollhouse by Todd Solondz (spelling?)on public TV, after that I got to see new Ken Loach movie at the cinema, and I just finished Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola on DVD!!! Well, it's been a really nice time... But the thing is, I just started to wonder how this cities (Tokyo, Glasgow or random US city) are, I mean, if they're so different to the way the film pictures them... I don't know, maybe it's because Spanish cities have nothing to do with what you see the in movies (even in Spanish movies). So I thought, maybe I can find some Sinners (sorry for the invention, but I really love the "sinners" word) who have seen any of the 3 movies and live in that city (specially Glasgow I guess), and can tell me how these cities are in fact. And maybe it's just a stupid way of not feeling so lonely.
