hello again all, a few notes re: recent mailings from you lot BELLE AND SEBASTIAN AT THE BARBICAN i confess that others have written on this before me and probably better. however, i must have my two cence to use an american parlance. firstly, i am absolutely miffed at missing the picnic. i arrived late due to having to work - this annoys me everso. i'm sure it was excellent. perhaps you all knew each other and i would've looked daft. either way i'm gonna throw my hat into the ring - let's (as the beach boys so deftly said) do it again. i want a london picnic! come on, lazy types, do we need a gig as an excuse? anyway, there was a gig. stuart's lyrical recollection was about 54% this evening. notable lyrical failures: slow graffiti, women's realm, stars of track and field. however, i cannot begin to tell you how much of a sap i felt hearing that wretched album. i was evangelical about that album circa 97/98 to the point of irritation. hearing the group play it through was pretty emotional stuff......i could see other fully grown chaps and chappesses looking far too emotional considering their years. i left fast to catch a train to enfield. i had to run and it hurt lots. THE GODLIKE GENIUS OF SCOTT WALKER someone was murmuring about scott here recently. scott is not for everyone, but in this scribe's humble opinion scott could sing the phone book and make it divine. if anyone sad enough to own 'i don't wanna hear it anymore' by the walker brothers then you'll know what i mean. i had an evening on the red wine and the scott came out......then the bacharach, then the jimmy webb. i don't drink much (he lied) but red wine + scott = mecca, followed by vomit alas. i reccomend him without reservation. espesh for the red wine crowd. yes i'm drinking now incidentally. If You Find Yourself Caught In Love Discussions/Action ================== 1. Lyrics notes for 'Slow Graffiti' were missing on three occasions but the audiences were able to provide backup copies. 2. 'Another Sunny Day' was a new song that sounded a little bit Country upon first hearing, and it was pretty good, too. 3. Electronic Renaissance was GRATE! even though Stevie didn't quite manage the end instrumental solo bit with a blowy device (action: KC to find out what that device was) 4. 'If you're feeling sinister' was very well rehearsed and I think lyrics were very rarely forgotten if at all during this. At the end of 'Judy and the Dream of Horses', there was a standing ovation. 6. 'Dog on Wheels' and 'The Boy With The Arab Strap' made me very grinny 7. Stuart sang the word 'wank' properly at the end of 'The Boy With The Arab Strap' 8. 'The Wrong Girl' and 'I'm a Cuckoo' made everyone stand up and dance ============================================================================ So yes, that was the gig. It was so so good. I was sitting there slouched on the (very comfy!) Barbican sofa, a beer in hand, thinking how good the sound was at the Barbican, how lovely the music is and how it was just the life and that if I had £25 on me every night and it's possible I'd go back and see the same thing over and over again. I'm properly reporting back because I seem to be reporting backwards too, the picnic was also lovely - so many faces turned up, together with their bodies - and we even made it to the top of the hill! It was very nice and I was particularly happy that we've eventually remembered the proper name of the things you bowl with in a game of bowls. And before the picnic Sam, Jo, and I saw STUART MURDOCH, and SARAH MARTIN, AND BEANS, AND IN FACT THE WHOLE BAND WITH LOADS OF THEIR GEAR* just walking down the street and through to the Barbican where they were to do their sound checks. Sinister: pull out the map

Yesterday was the first day that maybe felt like fall, a slight chill in the air as I cycled in the morning. The sky was a totally clear blue, and stayed so throughout the day, even as it warmed up in the middle. That night I read, by chance, Geoff Dyer's description of the same day. It was neither summer nor autumn. The sun had none of the intensity of summer but the trees were still thick with green leaves. Today was even cooler, even closer to fall. As I rode I thought about why I like days like that so much. The first time I really noticed this feeling it was exactly the same time last year. That exhiliarating combination of things: crisp air, clear sky, the intimation of a brisk fall ahead. The first time fall made an impression on me was two years ago, having just moved to Chicago, and I think this is source of the positive connotations. For the first time I felt like I was where I belonged and things that I wanted to come together were. I had a job where nothing was expected of me and that paid me (just) enough to live on. I had a place I could afford, good roommate, good friends around, and a working bicycle. That was, and still is, really all I need. That fall I cycled incessantly, exploring the city that I had called my own for six years but never actually known. I rode all over the city, eating in dingy ethnic restaurants and riding through neighbourhoods that were fascinating solely because they were there and new to me. I made new friends and revived old friendships, and being anywhere else in the world never occurred to me. The soundtrack to this period was Dear Catastrophe Waitress, which I listened to incessantly at work. I couldn't afford to buy the album, so I would listen to it on a Dutch radio station, from front to back all day, for weeks on end, building up to finally seeing them live at the end of October. By the date of the show I knew every word to every song. One lazy evening I had even cycled out to where the show would be to make sure I knew where it was and could get there by bus. It's a cliché, but it's really true that the more you own and the more responsibilites you have the less free you are. One of the reasons I miss that fall is that there was such a feeling of aimless possibility, that surely anything might happen since I was in a magnificent city with all of my basic needs covered, so I had the perfect foundation to build on. Now, two years later, so much has changed. I am doingat workwhat I want to be doing, I am in school studying exactly what I want to study, I have my name on a lease of an apartment instead of just hanging out there until the demolition crew comes, and I feel like Gulliver, tied down in every way, barely able to move. Every time I think I want to leave, I want to escape, I have to think, No, I have class next week. No, I don't have enough vacation time. No, I don't know anyone who would want to do that. No, that doesn't exist in this shithole of a city. I think about leaving, not constantly, but regularly, and I am painfully aware each time that I can't. I worry what stifling this urge will do to my psyche. I don't want to get used to it, I don't want to become resigned to the fact that for the next two years (or maybe only 20 months, I hope) I have dramatically reduced options. And then what? Will I be too old, too debt-ridden from school, too resigned to not doing things, to take advantage of it and do what I wish I had done. Will there still be things I want to do? In as way this is all academic. Leaving is not really an option, I can't afford to in so many ways. But the possibility is always in my mind, and I don't want it to go away. Sinister: She Made Him Forget His Dreams

Sebastian had been dreaming again. Lisa was not the Belle he had been looking for. And in the end she had lost patience. Falling in love with imaginary people does have a tendency to make friendships turn sour. Half a year of hardly speaking a word, treading awkwardly around each other. That was how long it took. But now they are friends again. Conversing in a more relaxed manner than ever. Maybe it had all just been a bad dream. When Sebastian woke up the sun was in his eyes. It was summer. A time to ponder why windows have blinds and streets are paved with stone. Sebastian always greets the summer with anxious anticipation. It is a time when life weighs easy on his shoulders. Still, at its end he is always in worse despair than ever. With plans left hanging, dreams left unfulfilled, and girls left unmet. What Sebastian didnt know, was that this summer would be different. It was to be the summer he had always been waiting for. Suddenly he had friends to see, things to do, salt water to leave flakes on his skin as the sun made it evaporate. He went to see a band with four boys in their corduroys. There a girl had taken his hand. A herald of change if there ever was one. It was clear it meant nothing to the girl, but it gave Sebastian a boost of self-confidence. Whats more, he now knew who the real Belle of the town was. He remembers clearly the first time he saw her. Two years ago, a brief glance. As if she had stepped out of the cover of his favourite record. Then she had seemed to turn up every now and then. Turn up to make the tears well in his eyes. Sebastian couldnt have dreamed they would ever share a word. And now he found himself in the same city as her. Their paths crossed by accident. Belle was in a band, called The Budgies. Sebastian knew the boy with the drumsticks. So he went to see The Budgies play, if only to hear Belles voice. It felt warm and soothing as it lingered in his ears. These days Belle will stop and talk to Sebastian if she sees him in the street. But Sebastian would find love in someone he never knew. Their eyes met across a sunny lawn at a cancelled TVPs concert. As dusk came, nothing more had happened. Sebastian stood troubled with his hands on the handlebars of his bicycle. He said to himself: Sebastian, if you go home now you know the thought of her will keep you awake all night. If this had been a year ago, he would have straddled his bicycle and been a very tired boy the next day. But tonight was different. He recalled the feeling of a hand in his. It put a new meaning into Having Nothing to Loose. So he walked back, keeping his distance. Minutes passed as he gave her glance. Sebastians heart tought he was short distance runner. His body was aching. Then suddenly he was walking towards her. Lets not speculate about what he asked her. After all, he had never done this kind of thing before and his incompetence is excused. Anyway, the girl mustve thought his question rather cute as she asked him to sit down and talk to her. Sebastian left with dreamy eyes and a piece of paper in his hand. It had a name scribbled on it as well as a series of numbers. Soon as Sebastian started coming to his senses again he learned that the numbers proved more useful if dialed on a phone. He started doing so often and this resulted in many a rendezvous. And the first kiss. And the first mixtape. One day they spent on a blanket by the beach, listening to a song Sebastian had written long ago. A song about that very moment. It was every bit as perfect as he had imagined it. What more could he ever ask for now that he had held her in his arms? Its funny. Sebastian had always cursed his sorry fortune. Being no one and having nothing. But everything he had now was of his own making. He didnt know how hed done it, but he was glad he had. hello sory, this is one of those emails which takes about 20 seconds to compose ... I just logged on to Amazon to order a copy of the new Warchild CD, only to see that the B&S song isn't listed on their tracklist. Can anyone confirm that it's on the CD? Hello Sinister. Robster's post made me remember that there are a few photos of the NYC Cloisters picnic up on Flickr. I won't link to each of them, because I am very lazy. Hiya Sinister! Yesterday afternoon I shook hands with JO PERRY (not the guitarist of Aerosmith, the other Jo Perry) and I promised that I'd post today from work. So here I am, rock you like a hurricane. And no. I never grow tired of quoting The Scorpions. Yesterday's Sinister meetup and B&S gig at the Barbie-Ken here in London was tons of fun. I am sorry that those of you who could not attend missed out. It started out as a nice picnic at Finsbury Circus atop the well-manicured hill. The weather was somewhat sunny when we got there and it was really nice to have our snacks and booze together. In attendance were KEN CHU (still unmarried), myself, the above-mentioned JO PERRY (not the guitarist of Aerosmith, the other Jo Perry), SAM WALTON, GRAINNE LYNCH, FIONA FAIRBAIRN, CARSMILE STEVE, ROBSTER BRENNAN, PAUL HEALEY, JORDI TRENZANO, OLA SZKUDLAPSKA and as we were about to transform our picnic into a pubnic, PINEFOX arrived. My apologies if I have forgotten anyone! No sooner than we decided to move on to the King's Head pub near the Barbie-Ken, it started raining. At first just a random sploosh on the scalp, and then suddenly a full-on shower. We had to take shelter a couple of times on our way, but managed to get there eventually. ROBSTER captured a brilliant photo of how wet KEN got. Once in the pub, other familiar faces and/or names with new faces showed up, so many that I probably couldn't name them all, but including MARK CASAROTTO, JIM PURPLE TROUSERS TAYLOR and SARAH MRS PURPLE TROUSERS, OLIVIER and ROCIO, and even my better half BEN APPS. KEN had smuggled in CARSMILE STEVE'S sausage and was practically forcing it into people's mouths. We were glad that we didn't get caught, KEN said it really filled him up. Some of the folks without tickets to the gig managed to get tickets, and that was very exciting. Some members of B&S were in the pub, too and some of the kids went to talk to them. the place was packed and there was a real buzz in the air. The gig itself was amazing - really good fun. The first few songs they played weren't on Sinister, including what sounded to be like a new one - a really good song. Also as if fulfilling a request by SAM WALTON they played Electronic Renaissance. Then they launched into Sinister and Stuart forgot lyrics almost immediately. Their sound was so good that a few missed out or modified lyrics added an element of old skool charm. During Judy and The Dream of Horses, Stuart called some dancing kids up on stage and they went mad. The encore was an array of other favourites including twattybus. People got up out of their seats and danced. It was a really good time.
