Hello listers, I'm a long-time lurker on this list but thought that I'd de-lurk for a moment to give my two-cents about the show in Montreal last night. This is just a little post I made to my blog about the show. The show last night at the Metropolis in Montreal was terrific. It was my second time seeing the band, the first time was last fall at the Across the Narrows festival in New York. The New Pornographers were great too. They primarily stuck to songs from Twin Cinema, which was fine by me. Unfortunately, there were some sound issues during their set. Mark always jokes that for an opening band, the sound guy keeps the button "that makes you sound good" locked up until the headliner comes on. In all seriousness, it was almost as if, when they first started, the PA was too small for the room and the sound guy was trying to find a balance between what sounded okay and what would be way too loud. Another thing I noticed about this particular crowd, at least in the part of the club where we stood, was how rude everyone was. I'm not sure if this a typical Montreal thing or just this show but people never shut the hell up. Talk, talk, talk...all through the New Pornographers set. It was actually distracting at times. We also noticed that many of the people there didn't seem to know why they were there in the first place. They seem to have little or no interest in either band (not to mention no familiarity with the music) and rather pranced around a bit, "seeing and being seen." It was odd. On the other hand, there was no smoking in the venue so, I guess if the trade off for not smelling like an ashtray and not being able to breathe was putting up with some chatty kids, that's fair. The really great thing about the show, that I appreciated, was the punctuality of it all. Belle and Sebastian took the stage around 9:30 p.m., just as scheduled. It was refreshing because I have to tell you, one of the things I dislike about Kingston or Toronto shows is how late they start. Anyway, they sounded terrific. Everyone in the band seemed really into the show, really happy and genuinely excited to be there. I don't know if this just how they normally are on a tour or if this is a "second day of the tour" euphoria but I for one, appreciated it greatly. Sinister: Tonight in Camden

Hello Sinister, I may have missed this being posted to the list already, but I thought that London listees might be interested to know that Beans is deejaying tonight (Sunday) at the Lock Tavern in Camden for the launch of the band's rather exciting Late Night Tales compilation. No other news, although (in a shameless plug) the band I'm in(www.sunsetgun.co.uk) are playing a gig at the Bull & Gate in Kentish Town next Friday, 24th February. Alas, we're first on the bill and thus terrified that no one will be there. It's a worry, dear Sinister, but one that would assauged if YOU turn up. So if you're at a loose end, come and see us. We're not terrific but we're competent. And, probably more pressingly, we sound precious little like Belle & Sebastian. Sinister: The sun was a demon

Blimey, it's over a year since I posted and I hope I never have to say *that* again. However it is somewhat fitting that I should post now that LIFFYPOO (bet the Dirty Vicar's done a poo in the Liffey in his time) has come out as in my last post here: http://www.mail-archive.com/sinister@missprint.org/msg01261.html I was banging on about the bit in Stuart's diary where he describes the process of writing what became The Blues Are Still Blue which is one of my favouritest tracks on the album. I am so glad it is going to be the next single. Hmm, no. 8 in the album charts - is this a best placing for the band? I am at work so the Guinness book of Hit Singles and Albums (in one handy volume) is not to hand. Incidentally, Another Sunny Day is the first song in ages to actually make me cry when I heard the lyrics, especially the last verse. I love Sukie in the Graveyard - I think I might play it at the work Stick it On night. I think the album's biggest surprise is Song for Sunshine. It reminds me of Summer the First Time by Bobby Goldsboro. It's quite ambitious and certainly doesn't sound like a song from 2006. I hope everyone enjoyed the Hammersmith gig. It certainly seems to have gone down well with Mr Walton, my fellow TV quiz-fiend of old. My absence was in no small part due to my self-imposed exile from the big city on account of the fact that I am BUYING A FLAT and so am doing anything and everything to save money. The fact that I no longer seem to have the wherewithal to actually get my ass in gear and buy a ticket for a big gig before they actually sell out might have something to do with it too. The frugal thing does seem to have taken hold of me in a big way. Sunday eve it actually extended to abstaining from alcohol, which those of you who know me will know was an enormous wrench. The weird thing was when I woke up this morning to go work I found that I actually felt *worse* than usual. Let that be a lesson to me. Or something. Is it possible to be 'worried sick'? It is a phrase I had previously associated only with anxious parents waiting in bed or behind the front door for errant offspring to appear, with the well rehearsed line of "You said you'd be back at X A/Pm I/we were worried sick". That said, the hassles involved in the home ownership malarkey do seem to have me feel like I have just run several marathons and it isn't helped by the fact that my landlady seems intent on changing the locks and dumping all my belongings on the garden path. Well, ok, maybe not, but "when are you going?" noises, of varying degrees of subtlety, have taken the place of proper conversation in recent weeks. Apparently she "needs the space" (like, why all of a sudden? Surely she needs the money more....). I did manage to smuggle a microwave in past her yesterday lunch time though, escaping her attention but not that of her eight year old as she told me that evening that he had seen me "carrying some sort of appliance"...snarf. Two independent people have recommended the Bel/Lanegan collaboration to me now, although one worryingly prefixed his praise by "I don't like Belle and Sebastian, but..." which hardly augurs well. Primavera Sound (Barcelona, 1-3 June) line up is announced 21st Feb - that's next week, people! Flat or no flat, I'm going to that! Wonder if I'll bump into Arantxa again....? Work beckons Mark. Sinister: 70s WHO

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5180/430/1600/hammy-who.0.jpg Here is a picture of the 70s WHO and Jimmy outside the Carling Apollo Hammersmith, where we all went the other night and where we saw Go Kart Mozart and B&S. I managed to keep to a bare minimum the number of new people I met, but they included Chris and Julia, perhaps best known as Bailey's mum and dad, and Carsmile Steve's best man and a woman who was once on the cover of a PiL album. This should be my new hobby - meeting women who have been on album covers. I'm going to start with that Roxy Music one where they're in their see-through pants. I also met some people I have met before, like Mooro, The Pinefox, Jerry the Nipper, indie legend Andrew Dean, Lixi, and some others. It was nice to see people, albeit briefly in many cases. Only the hardcore went to see Go Kart Mozart, others preferring flavoursome booze and discussion of Softly Softly Task Force and other Shepperton Babylon antics. I resisted the temptation to talk on Mooro's bootleg tape, but just thinking about it enlivened the first fifteen minutes or so of the gig. Sinister: NY Picnic, anyone?

Dear Sinister -- I almost never get up early on Saturdays. But I did today, because my nose was bleeding and I couldn't get back to sleep. I took care of that, and then read all the past few weeks' worth of your posts. Heady stuff, that. It was quite pleasant -- the house was all quiet and still, and Sebastian, the (Bassett) Hound of Rock was keeping my feet warm underneath the computer desk. I've been pondering how I can get him into the Nokia Theater for the New York show next month. He should see his partial namesake, after all. I'm stuck between pretending he's my Seeing Eye Bassett (a fatal idea, using him as a Guide Dog. He'd drag you into the streets if he smelled something interesting) or putting him in a little duffle-bag, a la chihuahuas on the subway. But he's 50 pounds (no clue what that is in kilowatts or whatever that funny metrics is) and that's a lot to haul around. But there would be a lot of new things for him to sniff... In other less Doggy pursuits, I think there should be some manner of Picnic before the New York gig. I am completely willing to organize it, if people are willing. Sinister: Apollo 9

Hello Sinister As various media corporations keep reminding me, the Brit Awards are taking place this week. Last night Carsmile Steve reminded me that Belle & Sebastian once won a Brit Award, after the release of their third album, for best newcomer. But that was seven years ago, and things were very different then. Indeed, I don't think many could have plotted a seven-year plan which transformed the Brit Award-winning B&S into the just-plain-winning group that performed last night. It seems that every time I post to you these days I bleat on about how satisfying it is to see the band all grown up and confident, how much I love seeing them swagger, without all the nervousness and diffidence of old. Sure, the records were great then, but the live shows were a little underwhelming. Now, as someone else said, the band are "tight" and "in tune", and there is a polish and ambition, which means that they're actually choosing to play their most difficult songs, but playing it really well. So last night we got a frankly astounding version of Your Cover's Blown, replete with crisp harmony and a lot of very tight funk, and seriously raving version of Electronic Renaissance, which appeared to have three of the band on percussion duties and Beans enjoying his new role as programmer/dance wizard. Much of the new stuff, too, with its three-part harmony and glam stomp would sound rubbish done by a less accomplished set of musicians, but they were professional and well-reheased (dirty words!) and the results showed. I was particularly impressed by the vocal breakdown of White Collar Boy ("She said you ain't ugly you can kiss me if you like"), and most of Sukie in the Graveyard, which beforehand felt like a bit of a filler on the LP. With this new-found confidence throughout their set, it was slightly funny hearing the old stuff. Fox in the Snow, perhaps the wettest of the "old-B&S" cannon, mutated into an assured, accomplished song, so much so that it was almost like hearing a "pops orchestra" version of the tune, like those 70s LPs you get of "chart hits" as performed by So-and-so So-and-so and his Orchestra. Judy & the Dream of Horses and Pastie, too, were greatly improved by the new style, rounding themselves up in the most satisfying of dins, and the finale of Swing Your Cock Around even had strobe lights and a house beat. Dazzling stuff. Struan is now a true showman too, shaking hands with the crowd, cracking jokes on stage, and writhing on the floor for the last verse of Your Cover's Blown before announcing that he thought he'd pulled something and appealing to a masseur to ease his pain after the show (that's my boy!). Disappointingly, Stevie's songs continue to let down the rest of the set, and his voice seems to jar with Struans when they sing in unison. These are minor gripes though, the performance was masterful and slick, and there ain't nuttin' wrong with that. We discovered their nationality when the match went to penalties. Inside the pub, meanwhile, was an assembled crew of Carsmile, Brapps, Aerosmith Guitarist Jo Perry, Gillian Kirby, and a couple of others whose identities escape me at the moment. That's all for now.
