I went to Chicago in May. While it's nice enough, it was about -100 degrees there. In the spring. It's very flat and wide, too, which I found mildly disconcerting. Thanks for the lovely welcome, To answer Ken’s question, my favorite album is “Sinister,” but lately I’ve been listening to “Dear Catastrophe Waitress” because that’s just the kind of mood I’ve been in. I have most of the albums, except I only have five songs from “The Life Pursuit” and I’m lacking any songs that were on the EPs that were not featured on “Push Barman.” I did just come into a fifty dollar windfall from volunteering for a test here at the college that ended up being an hour long quiz on abnormal sperm… but fifty dollars is fifty dollars, and that can buy the necessities (You know: “The Life Pursuit,” toilet paper, peanut butter… all the important things.) 'Desperation made a fool of me' made a fool of me - so it *is* there, on the b-side of 'Step into my office, baby'! Thanks to folks pointing that out to me! I had previously kind of boycotted all the singles off album tracks, as I really loved having the EPs that had all non-album songs (save for the funny version of 'The State I am In' in the 'Dog on Wheels' EP). But perhaps that boycott was a mistake, now that I'd been missing all the B-sides like the aforementioned DMAFOM, plus from further research found that I'd been missing also all these songs with interesting titles such as 'Meat and Potatoes' and 'Mr Richard' and 'I took a long hard look'. Anyone care to review? Otherwise I'd just imagine that they're all sex songs ('meat and two veg', 'mr dick', 'I took a long hard cock (up the arse)' - parentheses!). Ken P.S.: The cover of the radio session LP - is Isobel? Hello Sinister, One time, long, long ago, Ken Chu rode in my car in Chicago. This is so far my only true brush with fame in this world. Gayjay, I think Isobel's lines from Marx and Engels are as follows: "The bourgeoisie, historically, has played a revolutionary part to all feudal, idyllic relationships. It has resolved personal worth and in place of freedom is exploitation for profit alone. There is a spectre of the past in my bold assertion. We could learn much from the past." With that out of the way, welcome Leah! Sinister is a sleepier place these days, content to let the time drip by with a fit of activity every so often. Still, it's a pleasant place and I dare say things would pick up quite a bit if there was a new album by B&S anywhere on the horizon. My first experience with Belle and Sebastian was courtesy of a boy named Dmitri. He played Boy With The Arab Strap for me at an arts and crafts party that I was at. It was twee as fuck, of course, both the college age kids cutting and pasting construction paper as well as the music. Being a poor college kid I loved the music but only bought the one I knew was good when I was at the store. A little bit later, I was checking out somebody's illegally shared music collection and found "My Wandering Days Are Over" off of Tigermilk, and it was a prophetic song. My musical wanderings were certainly over for some time as I dove headfirst into as much of the B&S catalog that I could find. I read Sinister regularly, and was a much more frequent contributor to #sinister. Now much of that is just fond remembrances of my undergrad days. I moved back to my college town when I took a job with my alma mater, but by that time Sinister had grown into the grand old dame that she is now. I think it's a fitting development, but at the same time, it's always fun to see these periodic fits of activity. I never really spoke to Dmitri, or thanked him for introducing me to Belle and Sebastian. I'd see him around campus from time to time. He was dating a boy from my dorm at one point. But I had only met him once or twice, so it felt odd to go up and reintroduce myself over such a seemingly small thing. I never knew his last name, so I can't even google stalk him. Oh well. I guess playing a CD doesn't necessarily warrant tracking somebody down to thank them. Sinister: My First Time!

"My First Time"! Sounds racy, doesn't it? Of course, unlike other Sinisterines (looks in askance at Ken Chu and pines -- pines! -- at the memory of Markelby) I'm not actually tarty. I just like to pretend I am, sometimes. And I've no idea why, but in my head just now, I sounded just like Tevye the Milkman saying that. Anyway. I want a go at telling my "First time I heard Belle and Sebastian" story! It's a bit of a long story, so you'll have to indulge me. And it's long because it's part of a much longer story about a boy (one of /those/ kinds of boys) and I have to tell at least a little of it for the B&S story to make much sense. The boy's name was Daniel. I met him my first year of college, back in the mid 90s. When I think of him now, I think of him all in corduroys and Argyle sweaters, but I think most of that is sort of layered on, memories filtered back through TV and movies. Or maybe this time of year just lends itself to thinking of people in browns and greys. He was a year older than me, and I since I was still so fresh out of high school, I still thought that was a very big deal: in addition to being very pretty -- all dark curls over bright green eyes and snowy skin -- he was that much more older and sophisticated. Or so I thought. I'll spare you all the tedious details of how I actually met him (shoved into him by the proprietress of a charity shop on Franklin Street that liked to bill itself as a "vintage" store) and how we got to know one another, and skip to the part where he decided to go to a Study Abroad semester in London the next Spring. He was away all that semester, and when it ended he decided to stay in London through the summer, too, loafing, in my opinion, in a sort of louche hipster grandeur. I, on the other hand, spent the summer dressed as an Elizabethan soldier for tourists at the seaside and tried not to pass out from heat exhaustion We met up again, of course, that Fall. We were lying together on my twin n bed in my dorm room, comparing stories about our summers and listening to the musical treasures he had brought back with him. We were talking about t something trivial when he remembered something. "Oh man," he said, "You have to listen to this. You'll love it." He dug around in his bag and fished out another cassette. It was a copy of a record he'd heard. He took out the tape we were listening to and put another one in the little boombox we were listening to, and then cued up the song he wanted to play. It started, and he looked at me, his eyes shining with expectation. (Or was it Expectations?) I listened. I thought it was crap. I said so. He sort of visibly sank and looked disappointed. "I'm no big fan of techno," I said. "but that isn't even very /good/ techno." To this day, I have no idea why, out of all the songs on Tigermilk, he picked "Electronic Renaissance", or why he didn't give me some prep for it, like "Wait, listen to the lyrics!" or "The next song is better!" I felt really awful, because he had been so excited to share this. I mean, I know: I've felt exactly that sort of evangelistic glee, too, before and since, and for the exact same music. But I didn't get it that night. Not at all. And I really liked him, too, but I was too dumb then to even try to give it another listen, just for him. In the end it was all right. He had brought back a ton of music, and we listened to most of it that night. We ordered awful pizza and stayed up late, annoying my roommate, laughing and trying to correct the faults in each ch other's musical tastes, till we found other ways to occupy ourselves. And clearly I managed to hear some other Belle and Sebastian not much later and liked it. A lot. But that's another story. Oh! I have some actual content: I've been listening to "Marx and Engels" a lot lately. Does anybody know what Isobel is saying underneath Stuart's lyrics in the second half? dear sinister, great to finally hear someone else who's got "beautiful" as their favourite! and equally great to see a new (posting) member on the list. it's true that b&s are not doing much now - i don't think they have even played live since the 'life pursuit' tour... stuart is still working on that musical (http://www.imeem.com/godhelpthegirl/) but i met stevie in glasgow a few months ago, and he said there's definitely more coming. and last week at hdif, ian watson pointed out a new film that has b&s on the soundtrack - but browsing the internet now i can't remember what it was... maybe 'forgetting sarah marshall'? and of course there's the bbc sessions compilation, scheduled to come out in november! any devout fan probably have their treasured mp3s of "my girl's got miraculous technique" and such but i can't wait to hear it all in hi-fi :) stevie was also saying that his long-awaited solo album should be along soon. in fact he's playing in glasgow on the 17th, as 'stevie reverb & the reverberations'. it's part of the sounds film festival and zoey van goey, who are good friends of mine (but also a good band), are playing as well. go. oh, and my story about how i first heard b&s is still here http://heavenisabove.blogspot.com/2007/08/they-call-us-winsome-but-were-jus… kris xx = Shape Welding Machine Affordable CNC welding & cutting system. Sinister: Boozy nine-pinter Jane

Hello! Wow welcome Leah. Have you bought all the B+S albums yet? Which one's your favourite? I really like the red one with the girl holding her face with a book on the bed in the cover, my favourite song is Dog on Wheels though, cos it all sounds spanish and in the end it sounds as though he says "one day in SPAIN I'll take him down to the road anything goes", I still like to imagine that those were the lyrics as I've never been to Spain, but one day I will and it will be anything goes, once the Spainish girls grab a hold of me. I loved all the DIY videos too, they looked so much fun to make and so lo-tech, and I like to think that they probably never imagined how many times those videos will get watched when they made it - there's one on youtube just now for dog on wheels that has been seen 55,623 times, with someone (who isn't even me) writing "my favourite song." as a comment, just 2 weeks ago! My friend went to Stockholm recently and went to see a Vaselines concert! And apparently Stevie was there, and Belfast Bob! It sounded pretty exciting, I would have liked to see the Vaselines I think. Glad that this list is alive again! Sinister: Make a new cult every day

Hiya Sinister! Welcome Leah! Your introduction was lovely to read. There isn't much activity on the list recently, but your post reminded me of when I discovered Belle & Sebastian. I remember how after just a taste of their music I, too, became obsessed with hearing more. I had a friend in Texas whom I'd met at a Suede concert, he and I were rocking the AOL messenger chat every night and I was quite smitten with him. He had discovered b&s and typed the quote "have you and her been taking pictures of your obsessions/cos I met a boy who went through one of your sessions" and said it reminded him of me and my best friend, as we'd been making a fanzine about Suede and had become quite the little stalkers! That piqued my interest, and he sent me a mix tape which included "The Stars of Track and Field" and "Seeing Other People." I instantly fell in love. I must say that this "soundtrack" also helped increase my adoration for this friend, but alas, it was not meant to be (I don't have enough testosterone!) Funny how powerful music can be to romanticize ordinary life. I ended up ordering the "If You're Feeling Sinister" cd from the b&s management/fanclub (can't remember what it was really, got a letter from David Kitchen with it, though) and I was hooked. Like you, Leah, my budget for buying music was limited and I was driving to the Virgin Megastore on Sunset Blvd every few weeks to pick up the imports. "Lazy Line Painter Jane" was next, followed by the double whammy of "Dog On Wheels" and "3 ... 6 ... 9 Seconds of Light". I really couldn't believe how beautiful the songs were and how clever the lyrics were. I had found a band to replace my Suede obsession, which was burning out at that stage anyway. My favourite b&s song is still "Beautiful" from "3 ... 6 ... 9 Seconds of Light" I hope some new b&s material is coming out soon. There wasn't a whole lot of discussion on this list after "The Life Pursuit" came out, I seem to remember that a lot of old school b&s fans on the list weren't too keen on it. I have to say that I really love the album. It took me a while to listen to it enough for it to really grow on me, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that my life has changed a lot and I don't make enough opportunities to listen to music in the same way that I used to. In fact, since moving to London from LA, I really miss listening to music while driving, as I don't drive over here. I used to love to sing along to my favourites at full blast, as loud as I wanted. I suppose I could try it on the Tube, but could very well get kicked off! Nothing worse than loud obnoxious Americans on the Tube! Sinister: Fresh out of the nursery

Ah, my first post on the Sinister List… I’m not really sure how to jump in, so I’ll just go for it, guns blazing like any true Texan would. I am an extremely recent Belle & Sebastian fan compared to everyone else on the list, I’m sure. What’s worse, is I was exposed to the band through the lamest possible way- a friend gifted me the “Juno” soundtrack, which has both “Expectations” and “Piazza, New York Catcher.” Basically, two tracks later, I fell in music love. Deep, irrevocable music love; in a magical, yet almost creepily obsessive way. I absolutely could not stop thinking about getting more of their music, and this was back in the day before I had a debit card, so simply purchasing a CD from online wasn’t a viable option. So began the Great CD Hunts. I went to a plethora of music stores, from commercial chains like Best Buy and F.Y.E. to independently owned little shops, but had no luck. (Though I had to spell “Sebastian” for lots of confused employees) Weeks passed, but I didn’t give up. I couldn’t. My breakthrough came unexpectedly, the mark of all worthwhile breakthroughs. I was shopping at a bookstore, not even thinking about Belle & Sebastian, when the friend I was with pointed out that the shop had a music department. Out of habit, I browsed the ‘B’ section, and, happy day, they had not one, but TWO Belle & Sebastian CDs, “The Boy With the Arab Strap” and “Fold Your Hands…” Sadly, I was still in school, and rocking a minimum wage job, so I only had money for one album, and I chose “Arab Strap” because I am attracted to green more than yellow. I then discovered that I could order B&S CDs from the bookstore, and bought one every two weeks or so (depending on how long it took for the order to come in and when I got my paycheck.) I read about The Sinister List in the 33 1/3 book, and happy day, found the List still existed, and here I am.
