Hi my fellow Sinistereens!
This post has become horribly late because Ive had to change mail-addresses (though not from nme!) and stuff and everything has been a real mess and just now I noticed that I wasnt in nursery and maybe I hadnt been put back there at all. So I thought: what better time for a comeback that for a good old reporting back?! Yes, I have finally seen BELLE & SEBASTIAN live. It was indescribably fucking good! (I never use that word but today will have to be an exception). I really cant believe it. And I even got a f.. a Setlist. Actually Id written down all the songs, just case I didnt get my hands on a setlist, which is a kind of an awkward thing to do while dancing around in uttermost joy. Alright its time to get the Story going (if youre really lazy, like me, you should probably just scroll down and read the titles cause that is setlist)
I went to Copenhagen a while after school (if you remember, which you probably dont, I live in Sweden, which is not the same country as Denmark) and it was freezing cold, because I was only wearing my corduroy jacket and a shirt. (Of course I was also wearing my upside-down badge in case there were any sinisters. there probably wasn't, but I think some Icelandic guy was planning to go there. Anyway, no one noticed my badge, until after the show - and they hadn't heard of Sinister.) Waiting outside the door to venue I was amazed how few people there were and they were mostly Swedish. I mean it wasnt sold out when I checked in the morning and even though its Denmark (no offence, if there happens to be any Danish people reading this) seriously!! Its BELLE & SEBASTIAN. In Stockholm and Gothenburg the tickets sold out last year! Here, it didnt fill up until after the opening act and Im not even sure about that. The opening act or foreband if you translate from Swedish wa
s Aerospace, a Swedish band I can recommend strongly, if you bother to care. I new they were really good even though Ive never heard them. They did a fine job, though you could hear the vocals.
Passion Fruit
---------------
Then Stevie, Mick, Bob, Richard and Beans came in and they started playing Passion Fruit, which I had only heard as the end of Stop, Look and Listen. It was great. I didnt have a very accurate picture of what Stevie Richard looked like so it was a bit confusing at first. I even thought that Mr. Murdoch had darker hair.
Expectations
---------------
Then Stuart and Sarah entered and everybody started to shout and scream. At least I did. They all had kind of ordinary clothes, except Stuart who was wearing brown flares to go with the 70s interior of the venue he said. He picked his acoustic Taylor and started playing F#, Bm, F#, Bm . You know what that means dont you? Yes, Expectations! Too bad it was the only Tigermilk song, but according to their secretive encore sign language they were thinking about playing I Could Be Dreaming. They had a woman playing cello, I think youve mentioned her before.
Step Into My Office Baby
------------------------------
Time for a new song, the people in the back had to hear something familiar too. But they thought it was over when it came to the second string part. This when string section started getting busy too. Mick played some horn too. And Stuart was able do his little dance for the first time.
Seeing Other People
------------------------
Stuart moved over too the piano and I thought: can it be an old song, can it be an old song?! I was right! I was under the impression that they didnt play many songs from Sinister. But now they had rehearsed and he didnt even forget the vocals once. Absolutely the best song so far.
DCW
-----
I dont remember much from this song, except that I really noticed the strings for the first time. It is kind of short too.
Belle & Sebastian
---------------------
Yes, you read correctly I didnt mix up the title with the band. Stuart said there are always some hardcore indie kids who wants to hear old obscure songs at shows. Songs I hardly know Ive written. My heart stopped. Were they going to play Rhoda or Pocket Book Angel or something like that. And then they started playing I was one of the few who recognised the song. It was really fantastic! I dont think theyve played that song much, but I was hoping they were going to play something from the EP:s and that is probably the song the song I was most pleased to hear in the whole set.
The Wrong Girl
-----------------
It says Travellin Light in the setlist but thats Stevie-song too.. anyway Stuart said This is a song written by Stevie Jackson on which I play bass. That should be enough for you to know which it is. He played an opaque bass guitar that he was sad to say he could play more on. It was really good to hear Stevie sing a whole song, cause hes a great singer.
The Boy Done Wrong Again
----------------------------------
Whats this I thought, another Sinister song, and a rare one at that! Unbelievable! It was so wonderful with the violin and cello and all. It nearly made me cry.
You Dont Send Me
-------------------
Probably the song on DCW I like the least, its still great I mean, but a little less.
(Family Tree)
----------------
Yes, I know they dont play that song now that Bels gone but it was the time of the show where we usually take a break, which means time for a person (usually a girl) in the audience to sing a song. A girl from Malmö got to sing Family Tree. Another girl wanted to sing Stuarts favourite Smiths song, but he said the band wouldnt play that. She did quite alright although she forgot the lyrics for the second verse it was the only song that wasnt in the song-book. She got a real medal that said I made it with Belle & Sebastian. Now that I think about it wish I would have sung My Wandering Days Are Over, but maybe they would be offended because I sing to much like Stuart. I couldnt even decide what I would like to sing then.
Piazza, New York Catcher
--------------------------------
It was great it in all its simplicity, with just Stuart singing and Mick on acoustic.
Theres Too Much Love
-----------------------------
Yes! The first FISHYCLAP song. And one of the best! I just love the strings at the end!
Love On the March
-----------------------
It was interesting to see who played what on this song. Stevie was singing, Mick played guitar and Stuart played a little keyboard.
Fox In the Snow
------------------
According to the setlist they chose between this and Slow Graffiti. Im glad they took Fox, cause its still on of their best songs. Stevies solo on his Martin is one of the best ever. Yet another Sinister song.
Im a Cuckoo
----------------
They chose between this and If You Find Yourself Caught In Love here. I like the latter better, but they finally got a chance to rock out and there was some serious jumping going on!
Roy Walker
--------------
Time for inviting many kids up on stage for some finger-flicking. I finally understood what the distortion pedal that I laughed at in the sound-check it was for Micks solo. Stevie did own solo, on the harmonica. They didnt really manage the intertwining vocals but it still rawked.
Womans Realm
-------------------
Another one of my favourite FISHYCLAP songs! Again with some glorious strings and guitar at the end.
Stay Loose
-------------
I thought this was going to the last song, but I was wrong. It was very good, but does he have to try to sing with that robotic voice live?
Legal Man
------------
Oh no, its the last song and the first one I couldnt completely sing along with! I have to buy that 12.
Encore
--------
For the encore there were hundreds of suggestions. Someone said Le Pastie and I agreed but Stuart just said Nah, its been a long time They finally decided for Judy and played an extended version of it. It was to good to be true. I almost lost my voice.
You may have noticed there where no TBWTAS songs, but they compensated me with playing the title-track as the real last song. And when Stuarts vocals trailed of there at the end I knew it was over
I hope there will be some reports from Stockholm and Gothenburg. My condolences to Astrid and Johan who werent able to get in. I mean, how stupid is that? 18-year limit at a B&S concert! Old beer-drinkers shouldnt be allowed.
Im sorry if Ive taken up much of your time,
but I warned you!
Chris

skirting disaster
____________
after waking up at 7:30 to call in to see if i've got work today...i don't
so i go back to sleep. so, i'm asleep and am awakened by fire trucks around
noon. fair enough, it's time to get up anyway. the sirens are normal, i
live three blocks away from the fire station, i pay no mind. so i'm chilling
in my apartment, trying to be productive, and what i don't know is
apparently 18 buildings are on fire 5 blocks away.
i hate to reference fox news, but they've got pictures:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,115341,00.html
ohhh shiiiit. i even went out when the flames were in effect. large chunks
of shit on fire apparently coasted 5 blocks the other way onto I-95.
mmm, skirting disaster, yummmmmy.
speaking of skirting disaster, the first (and last) time i visited the world
trade center, was the week before shit went down. i also flew the week
before on the same flight that got hijacked. same flight, previous week.
fuck that. makes me want to not leave the house. or carry an anvil proof
umbrella.
i't not like i'm living in a war zone or anything. or under a fascist
dictator's rule, well, bush is questionable. but i *hate* fire. when i was a
young'un, we had wood heat in a 200 year old house, which had, funnily
enough, 200 year old chimneys. there were chimney fires. i slept through
them, and then woke up on the lawn with my house on fire. fuuuuuuuuuuck.
the world is a mixtape:

it's like 50 degrees and sunny outside, so the
windows open. there's the horn buildup in peaches and cream,
the whooooooooooooooo crazy freakout part. i live 3 blocks away from the
fire station, and
just during this part a fire truck rolls by, sirens wailing; joining in with
the horns, effectively
remixing the song. awesome.

Oh so much dither and hither and thither. The Official Brighton Spring
Picnic 2004 is now back to the orginal date of 3rd April (NEXT SATURDAY)
and no returns.
Please enter indelibly in your diaries and start lining your stomachs now.
I'm sure it will be a marvel of candy-coated alcoholism, virtuoso DDR, big
waves, alfresco eating and dirty jokes as usual.
Thank you for your attention.

Hi,
Sorry for an impersonal and not very well thought out email.
I'm trying desperately to get a copy of the "I'm a Cuckoo" DVD single, and
pre-ordered one from Amazon more than a month ago now. My CD single came
really quickly, but Amazon still hasn't been able to source the DVD for me.
Can anyone (in the UK) tell me if the single is actually easily available.
Has anyone else had issues getting a copy? And if so, any suggestions for
somewhere I can order a copy who won't charge me an arm and a leg for
shipping outside of the UK.
Thanks,
Lawrence in New Zealand

***Caution: boring picnic logistics to follow***
After some discussion and thought, I've decided that a better date for the
Brighton picnic might be April 17th.
If those who regretfully told me they couldn't come on the 3rd, COULD come
on the 17th, please email me again! In fact, everyone email me if you can
come.
Thanks!
OK, back to typing out bad poems.

Better make it a full one or he will SWEAR at you. Does Virtual Neil on
the band website also SWEAR? I haven't got the guts to try it out at
work.
I was thinking about what I'd do if I owned an original TM. Would I get
new members of the band to sign it or would I go for the old school hard
core and then try to track down Stu D and Isobel? And does Mick count? I
think I'd rather get autographs on my fragrant decollete anyway. Mmm,
permanent markers.

The sensible answer to be to find out where band will be after the show.
Chances are Beans will be DJing at some dodgy dive till the wee hours. After
the last Berkeley show I think he did a spot somewhere in Oakland (someone
correct me please!). Most of the band will probably go along to that, and as
long as they have their ID and can actually get in, will I'm sure be more
than happy to break off from boogie-ing to scrawl their name across some
vinyl.
Having said that, my advice is this:
Run naked accross the stage whistling Pocketbook Angels (that'll get their
attention).
Bribe Neil Robertson with a warm half empty bottle of Becks.
Sleep with the violinist who always wears the Hibernian shirt (Frazer or
Alexander or something).

Hello folks,
Usually I've not an autograph person. Autographed items never really did
much for me so I've never chased it. Chasing skirts is much more fun.
However, today it occurred to me that I have something I REALLY REALLY want
to get the band to autograph for me at their SF show at the Warfield next
month. For some reason this completely escaped my mind at the Berkeley show
last year. I must be getting old.
So friends, my question is: What do I have to do at the Warfield show that
night to get the band to sign my original Tigermilk LP? Who do I have to
bribe? Who do I have to kill? Who do I have to sleep with?
I booked a trip to London the day of the show (stupid me), but if I can have
my LP signed I'll have my ticket changed...
Cheers,
-B

Hello kittens.
I've been on holiday, although due to critical fundlessness, this entailed
sitting in my parents' house while they went to Scotland for a week. I did
manage to go for one nice long walk, but the rest of time I was strangely
put off by the gale force winds, hailstorms, and towering waves crashing
over the garden wall...
I did get a bus to Eastbourne on Friday though, and let me tell you, you
have not experienced seediness until you've sat in a deserted Curzon cinema
in Eastbourne on a Friday afternoon. The concept of carpet hadn't reached
them, let alone comfortable seats. I also played pool on the pier (again no
carpet) but can report back that Brighton is a rather more congenial venue
for such activities.
Speaking of which, the sparkling Miss Robyn jogged my memory about the
proposed Brighton picnic in April. And yes, indeed, it is going ahead with
all water pistols blazing:
**********************
Date: Saturday 3 April
Time: ooh, about 2pm
Place: Brighton Station for meeting the usual Sinister Express from London
I suspect, then The George pub just down the road on Trafalgar Street, then
probably the BEACH
**********************
So if you want to come and you need more info, email me. I will even give
out my mobile phone number if you agree to bring me sweets. And if you are
coming from London, get your arses coordinated as per usual I suppose.
Hoorah!

yes yes yes! London baby! I'm going to visit London over the Easter, to be
more specific, from the 9th till the 14th. I would love to meet up with the
London peeps, I've only been there once, so I basically don't anything about
where to meet up. Please let me know if you want to organize a get together
while I'm there.
