Did anyone else see the compilation of bands from 'Don't Look Down' on
Scottish Television last Thursday night/Friday morning? It was on quite
late, so maybe not. I was pleasantly surprised to see B&S appear with I
Could Be Dreaming. Whilst most bands which were featured had been doing
live performances in the studio, their contribution had been filmed
elsewhere (and I'm not sure whether it was live or from the album -
anybody know about this?). The presenter also mentioned that Tigermilk
was changing hands for £200!
Oh, and wasn't it a travesty that the recent BBC Scotland review of the
last 25 years of Scottish rock and pop ignored B&S as one of the new
bands to look out for. They managed to mention Travis and the
Supernaturals and that was it.

That's a *lazy* line, I'm sure. Where does the terry underwear come in?
Perhaps a card could be drawn to take Jane out for tea, or to get up the
nerve to tell Elvis that your dad looks like him, or to buy a pair of jeans
that's 7-8 years old for String Bean Jean. Oooh! What fun! That could be
a Passover/Easter Weekend project.

To continue in the tradition of living the Belle and Sebastian songs, I faked
a limp for the week, as per "PocketBook Angel". After a week of recovery from
the dear parting of my appendix, I had to return to my temp office job on
Monday. Although most of the employees and I usually ignore each other, that
day everyone wanted to talk to me about the surgery. However, on Tuesday I
had lost the post-op appeal. In an attempt to become popular again I faked a
slight limp; well, I _did_ still have a pain in my side from an incision.
However, I forgot which leg to put my weight on and started to put it on both.
The result was a walk that resembled a drunken stumble. This did not win me
any more sought-after sympathy. Now my co-workers and I have fallen back into
the much more comfortable socializing of murmuring hello as we pass in the
halls. One of my cats has a limp; I am studying her movements now. So,
instead of a drunken stupor-walk, I will be successfully limping soon. . . on
all fours though.
Often I am jealous of the cats when they lay in a pool of sunshine that
steals in through the windows.

Call it divine inspiration, call it the result of enjoying the post-
appendectomy painkillers too much, call it the bouncing of my feeble brain
against the inside of the skull as I faked a limp. . .
Since we still have a few months before the new lp is to be released I
thought that there must be a way for us Sinisterines to entertain ourselves.
Imagine a Belle and Sebastian board game--B&Sopoly, if you will.
For one to eight players. Recomended for people 16 and up, preferably with
the life outlook of an 8 year old, the mind of a 15 year old, and the
weariness and sorrow of the human race.
For your game piece choose either a fox, a camera, a bus, a dog-on-wheels, a
piece of cake, an Elvis (whatever that is), a line, or a horse.
Instead of pieces of real estate to buy as in Monopoly, this board has places
that figure in the band's history and songs. Featured sites are the
churchhouse, Kelingrove Park, the coffeehouse the members met, Union Chapel,
Gloucester Road, Manchester Town Hall, Liverpool, West 54th. Street studio,
etc.
No "Go Directly to Jail" cards in this game; it would be replaced with "Chat
With Fans on IRC", or "Sit Down For Proper Interview". (However, if you the
player decide not to show up to either, no one can make you.)
There would be other cards to be drawn in the course of the game. Examples:
"Return to Manchester because Isobel left her rockstop", or "Lose turn while
searching for Lawrence from Felt in London".
No money, play or real, would exchange hands during the coure of the
game--that would just be vulgar to sensitive sensibilities. Unless of course,
you draw a card that offers you the chance to buy a copy of _Tigermilk_. Then
it is a free for all.
The objective of the game? There is none. Move your piece around the board
for a few hours until you lose interest to do something more worthwhile, like
taking a nap, or writing a story or song.
Who else would like to play?
Living and loving

Someone mentioned fraggles, right?
Well, it was the Doozers (the really tiny thangs) that I felt sorry
for. They spent the entire time making things out of this weird
clear plastic stuff (Where did it come from-did they EXCRETE it??!!),
and these truly magnificent pieces of far-out architecture were
invariably crushed, or in some cases eaten, by passing Fraggles.
I think there's some kind of message for everyone there.....
See y'all around,
Andrew B.

lalala
tonight i saw the beautiful pastels at last they played at a record shop
here in los angeles and it was so very lovely i talk to them afterwards
and they were all very polite and darling... i missed their show at the
club they played at here because i am a mere 19 instead of the 21+ that
was required...
it made me happy to see them especially because contrary to popular belief
not a lot of bands really come through los angeles and also there is a
lack of all ages clubs at the moment since most of them shut down towards
the later half of 1997...
i donot know why i am really telling all this but i just wanted to share
my happy pastels experience...
its late however and im running off at the mouth again...
its bedtime i think...
take care

Hello there,
Hope most of you are having nice easter holiday.
As Aya mentioned, our Japanese and Asian citizens are having just
another ordinary weekend.
But, even in the far east, we can share the joy of Northern Ireland
peace negotiation issue. That's been a head line news here in Japan as
well. When I picked up newspaper this morning, I was almost
crying....well, I did cty a bit.
I know it's only the beginning, but I wish people will work it out for
the sake our precious lives.
By the way, I am reporting something very shocking and embarassing.
I was reading a Japanese music magazine and foung one of the record
shop's ads
selling B&S material.
At this record shop, all the standard cd single price is about 5 pounds
but
Dog On Wheels CD, they priced about 12 ponds saying "they are limited
and it's getting very difficult to find" Is this true? But I wonder 12
pounds is right price even it's so hard to get?
And more, They are selling LLPJ promotion video(?!) with the comment of
"very rare, promotion video made in '97". And the price is pathetic 30
pounds(!!!!!!!!!). THIRTY POUNDS!. for one song only and in PAL(in
Japan, we are on NTSC system). I guess this video is made from MTV or
other TV broadcasting stuff.
What a rip off!
But there must be some Japanese naive B&S fans here who are willing
spend on this kind of thing so the shameless people can run their
business and keep making money from other people's pocket......
ta ta,
Kaori

HEFNER are our newest signings and have been in the studio in Scotland with Tony Doogan of Belle and Sebastian fame. Sounding like Belle and Sebastian and the Violent Femmes all mixed up with Palace, Hefner are set to capture heart and souls. The album, Breaking Gods Heart will be out 15th June, preceded by two singles, Pull yourself together [20th April] and Love will destroy us in the end [18th May], though the first release on Too Pure will be a 5 track 10 ep entitled The Hefner Soul. Darren also has a short story in BOA, a fanzine which you should get hold of in any case for the sheer amount of brilliant records reviewed by Gayle Harrison.
