Hello hello,
New here, feeling a little cautious about posting--(opening night
nerves!! someone give me a shot of voddie and a slap on the back, would
you?) So be kind, that's all I ask. :)
> I went on to the chat site last night and was having the usual
>music-y conversation when it was mentioned that perhaps people (such as
>those on list this list) who are really into music have no life. Is this
>true? Do "normal" people see such activities as being obsessive about a
>particular band or genre as sad? Or does the obsession hold a mystique
>that makes these people seem more interesting than they really are?(Are
>people into to music simply for this very reason?)
Spod, I didn't think you were serious about posting that! It 'twas
me that said that, but it was partially in jest. A reference to the (ok)
book "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby. Over-rated by now but still hits home
with anyone who's a music junkie. The meaning behind mixed tapes for your
crushes, spending hours re-arranging your record collections, refusing to be
friends with people who like Simple Minds...
And I quote the passage that struck me the most (forgive me if this
book's been discussed before, it's brief je promets!) :
"The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones
who like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has created
this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to the sad songs
longer than they've been leading the unhappy lives."
At any rate, I know I turn into a little hobbit when I'm in my "only
B & S will do" moods. It's music that naturally makes me somewhat reclusive,
which isn't a bad thing, but I do tend to hole up a bit and forget about
being social. (NB: Then again, "lazy line-painter jane" is INCREDIBLE to
dance to when you're out.)
What I *really* need to do is attend one of these Sinister Picnics
I'm hearing about, and then I'll have a healthy balance. ;)
As for other people I know, the most music-obsessed of them happily
admit to having little to no life, as far as the "average" life goes. Work
is simply a way to get pay cheques to pay for records and new fab speakers
and the best record needle on the market. They emerge only for the gigs they
simply can't miss.
I would say being an ultimate music junkie is akin to being a
computer programmer. The characters from 'Microserfs', for example, are
pretty much the same as the ones in High Fidelity, only with Pentiums as
opposed to owning a mint Stax '45 collection.
Some people might think that pathetic, but at the end of the day, if
you're happy, it matters not what anyone says.
> It's like paying £££'s for TM when it isn't really worth that much
>(certainly not to me anyway). Is the price so high because of the
>coolness factor that is associated with the records rather than the
>songs themselves?
Like anything, it can split off into different camps. My friend has
paid ooodles of money to get his Lee Hazlewood Swedish-issue records, but he
paid it only because he HAD to have them. It's a compulsion, to complete the
puzzle and sit there looking at them with a glow of pride. Then you've got
the types another friend has complained to me about, people collecting
Northern Soul, paying exhorbitant prices for '45's only to NEVER play them.
Dishing out major attitude about what they own to score cred/social points.
Stuff like that turns my stomach.
Another thought: do people fill their lives with music when there's
something missing in their lives, especially love? I'm sure I do, a bit.

p.s. I've been enjoying the IRC chat quite a lot-- flabbergasted to meet
people who know people I know, etc. Small world, indeed.

Oooh, I've just started reading Rick Moody's THE ICE STORM. I started
flipping through the pages on the walk back from the library, and found
myself so engrossed, I was hit by a car. I write from a full body cast,
several hours later. The good news is that the book wasn't terribly
soiled by my blood or tire tracks, so I'm off to read more.
Someone said to me today that if there is a bright star of fashion in
this universe or on this planet (maybe Tokyo?), then Trinity University
is the furthest point from that star. So far this week, I have seen FIVE
knee length denim skirts, a staple in my fifth grade wardrobe. The good
news is that none of these garmets were acid washed. The bad news is
that even our local Gap has been displaying these skirts (and, mind you,
I do live in a big city). This phenomenon leaves me cold and
frightened. A friend mentioned once that his personal (and only) rule of
fashion is no denim above the waist. I wish to further extend this rule
to no denim that starts above the knees. I propose a worldwide ban on
denim skirts and shorts (especially the really short, creepy variety that
Texan girls are fond of), and where better to begin than on the Belle and
Sebastian list.
Sorry if I've offended any acid-washed miniskirt and jacket wearers, but
this is an issue I feel strongly about and can no longer ignore.
Jon Parker- Thanks for the "Century" booklet; it's beautiful. I also really
enjoyed Paradiso, which I read between classes.
Emily Pickles- Gordon sends his love and the Juice Tiger is working well.

I never realized that the members of the Catatonia list were the
all-knowing gurus of mailing-list etiquette.

ok now here's where I must say that if you're going to voice strong
opinions on a subject - politics, music or whatever - you should be
prepared to stand up to the rebuttals that they are sure to envoke.
on the other hand, there have been a few unwarranted outlashings on
the list, particularly on the eager new enthusiasts.....
yeah, it may be annoying to read yet another Tigermilk request, but
hey, we were all there once (cept for those fortunate few who have
their own vinyl copies).
and thanks everyone who's contributed to book recommendations. I now
have a list of books a mile long to look out for on future trips
to librarys and bookstores. I'd recommend something too if I could, but
I haven't read that much lately apart from scientific journals and
textbooks - BORING!
I'm just happy now cause Eddie Izzard is doing a 8-week stint in NYC!
yeahhhhh!!!! izzog man rules!

I AM VERY SAD, but:
Wrong Love by Belle & Sebastian
I went looking
For my darling
I went looking
For a sign
And I found her
In the morning
Somewhere in the back of my mind
I'm not what I could be
I need a true love
I went looking and I found her
The wrong love
The wrong kind
The wrong hand to be holding
The wrong eyes to go searching blind
The wrong dream to have in my mind
I went looking
For my darling
I went looking
For a sign
And I found her
In the morning
Somewhere in the back of my mind
I'm not what I could be
I need a true love
I went looking and I found her
The wrong love
The wrong kind
The wrong hand to be holding
The wrong eyes to go searching blind
The wrong dream to have in my mind
[Instrumental]
I'm not what I could be
I need some loving
I went looking and I found some
The wrong love
The wrong kind
The wrong hand to be holding
The wrong eyes to go searching blind
The wrong dream to have on my mind
The wrong love
The wrong eyes
The wrong smile
The wrong love
The wrong love
[Applause]
Belle & Sebastian songs sound so much better when you have the lyrics to go
with them, I find
How young is the youngest person on the list? Me and bethey are just 15.
Can anyone beat that?

many thanks for your kind support of waht really really was a genuine error
on my part. I cant apologise enough and feel I have been punished enough as
I am now on probation and received my quota of seere reprimands. JJ, I feel
there was
absolutely no need for that abusive and totally OTT reaction. My advice
to you and all other sinister hysterics out there is TAKE A CHILL PILL
there are
more worthy causes out there to get excited about. By the way for anyone
interested my aborted message to the list was to recommend a great movie by
t
the director of Bogie nights - Hard Eight.

Hey, JJ
And just where is your politeness? It surely grieves to see such rage
and
anger towards a fellow listee.
So much fuss... it really wasn't necessary. ;)

"to those who doubt, but who have the mind to conceive, and the sensibility
to feel, the disorder, the futility, the meaninglessness, the mystery of
life and suffering, and who can only find peace through a satisfaction of
the whole being." T.S.Eliot
Well... i guess that the perfect sountrack to this poem would be any song
from The Field Mice or Another Sunny Day. They are no longer here, they
left us.
But hey...don´t be sad. We still have the beauty/sensibility of B&S and
Trembling blue Stars to fill our lifes with something REAL.
Thank you, Lord.
Pedro.
