Hmm.. The parable of the talents is quite gnomic really. Is it a
counterbalance to the 'eye of the needle' comment, or should we not
identify God with the tyrannical lord whose story he tells and instead
see the parable as a description of the injustice of this world (as
opposed to the next)? Whichever, I don't think Jesus would have
looked so kindly upon Zacchaeus if he'd hidden in his tree and shouted
out requests for tips in the 4.20 at Cheltenham.
I promise not to talk scripture anymore. I just thought that as
off-topic tangents go it was more interesting than indie minutiae.

This famed socio-political ballad was by the esteemed folkie and
Childrens TV presenter Ralph Mactell. It was called simply "Streets Of
London". I seem to remember ATV doing it in a boorish punk stylee.
Nick Dastoor the other day mentioned the musical influence that some of
his teachers had on him. My history teacher used to preface his lessons
with selections from Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica". I think it
was an attempt to frighten his pupils into paying attention.
Cheers.

Assuming Adrian, your school assemblies didn't involve you lot howling out
the Anti-Nowhere League's version of this song, then "Streets of London" is
Ralph McTell's 1974 hit. Ralph McTell was a singer on the late sixties/early
seventies folk circuit and knew Nick Drake and John Martyn and suchlike - he
probably knew Sally Oldfield too pop pickers :-)
"Streets of London" was his only hit, and in the early 80's he lent his
deadpan drawl, and habit of wandering around with his hands in his pockets,
to co-present a kids program.
As mentioned before, second generation daft punksters the Anti-Nowhere
League did a curaazzeee cover of "Street's of London" in 1982. It was
crap... and it certainly wasn't funny.
Cheers,
Keith.

True, it is by far the inferior version, but such is the enormity of this song, it still sends the shivers down my spine.
Now I apologise to our non-uk friends as they may not be familiar with this, but when I was at primary school we used to sing a couple of songs in assembly that would make me cry.
One of them was "Leaving on a jet-plane" (Don't laugh you bastards!!), don't ask me who wrote this 'cos I'm hopeless at anything pre '77.
The other was a song which I can't remember the name of, but went.....

Now beat the living shit out of me if I'm way off the mark, but TSIAI totally reminds me of this song and brings back the memories of the only days I can honestly say I was happy and didn't have a care in the world.

Hello all,
Has anyone ever noticed that "Electronic Renaissance" sounds like
a techno song and "Dog On Wheels" sounds like a Flamenco song at higher
speeds. Or maybe it is just me.

My friend, refers to Belle and Sebastian as "Those Pussy Boys," brought it to
my attention that "Century of Fakers" is remarkably similar to "The Wedding
Song (There Is Love)." Not the traditional wedding march ("here comes the
bride...tra la la"). I downloaded a midi file off the internet and listened
with a skeptic ear, and he's right!

I was the one who started the Gaelic/Scottish language thing to do
with the B&S setlist language blunder.
I originally come from Banffshire (that's in Scotland for you non
UK-ers) where we speak DORIC (a very strong dialect), which, in
written form, is pretty near to 'Old Scottish' (with some very
local words). As far as I know there is a society dedicated to
the less used Lowland variety (for you non-Scottish types that's
the populated bit from Glasgow to Edinburgh)
Somehow I don't think Belle & Sebastian would write in any
version of Scottish.
Imagine that!!!
It's already bad enough with B&S being described as Folk-Pop.
Writing in Scottish they would then become Super-Folky.
I've never liked the music journo habit of describing singers or
groups as 'folk'. I think they forget that there might be a local
folk music tradition. B&S certainly don't sound folk in the
Scottish sense (thank God or whatever).
I think I've been watching too much Discovery Channel.
I'm off to dream of horses (maybe).
