> My copy of Telstar (b/w "Jungle Fever"!) came out in 1962, which
would have made me 6 years old at the time.
More old folk - triple hurrah!
All this Telstar talk has inpsired me to do a silly thing and make a
list of all the "That song sounds just like that" comments I can
recall or have come up with myself. So:
Mayfly...'Telstar' - The Tornados
Dog on wheels...'Alone again or' - Love
Seeing other people... Peanuts theme by whoever
Lazy line painter Jane... 'I can't stand it' - Velvet Underground
(the intro, anyway - listen to it)
Slow graffiti... 'The laughing gnome' - David Bowie
The stars of track and field...'Shangri-La' - The Kinks
The Boy done wrong again...'Pink moon' - Nick Drake (well he had to go
somewhere)
Hmmm.. haven't quite completed the Donovan Lovedrake triangle. Can
anyone suggest a plausible Donovan song? Or any other daft
comparisons? I think someone once came up with one for 'Le Pastie.."
that I really couldn't see myself, but I've forgotten it.
Sudden thought: people might get angry with me for doing this. Please
understand that I mean no harm, am rarely seen sporting a cagoul, and
don't think for one minute that Belle & Sebastian are shameless
plagiarists who need exposing. This is my new defence against flaming
- come over so wet in the original post that that the flames can't
catch.
Nick

It's me dad's address, he's called Alan. Doh! But of course you probably
new that already (it's not a pseudonym/porn name or anything...but just for
the record, it would be Licorice Pettigrew- crap, I know)
Lets all us Edinburgh B&S fans meet up for a piss-up or something sometime!
(who needs picnics...bah!) I'll be the one dancing on the tables (before
turning them round) shouting my usual catchphrase; "DO WHAT THE GIN TELLS
YOU!" Smashing.

Can anyone help me out on the title of the Me Me Me song?
This is all my friend Duncan managed to come up with....
I remember they had a song out a few years ago that everyone was
singing along to. Can't remember what it was called but was a
pleasant little ditty maybe linked with either a film or charity. As
far as I am aware, they have ceased to exist and only came together
for whatever reason they came together for

Lee, the song was "The State I Am In". IMHO, an inferior version does exist on
the Dog on Wheels ep. The version you want to have is on TigerMilk, and if you
can't get someone in your country to tape it for you, e-mail me off-list and
you'll get one from Los Angeles.

Well i`ve been on this list a few months now and i have finally plucked
up the courage to write. I`ve started to feel like Mr Burns silently
watching the workers at the nuclear power plant over cctv, but no longer.
I figure whats the worst that could happen to me if i introduce my self,
it`s not as though you`ll come round and give me a kickin is it... errr
is it?
First of all heres my story. I was introduced to the delights of belle
and sebastian by Mark and Lard when the were on at night, or maybe not. I
definitely remember hearing a record played by Jo Wiley on a sunny
Saturday afternoon whilst i was reading a book in the garden the
first few lines of the song were something about a wedding day and
and telling your brother your gay. On hearing this song i remember
thinking to myself 'what a fine song that was' and
'has`nt that bloke got a weird voice'. A few months later i brought
the album on the strength of that one song i had heard. On the train on
the way home i read the sleeve notes and inspected the lyrics to look for
the name of the mystery song only to find it was`nt there. I thought i`d
wasted my money on another shit album like the time i bought a Cocteu
twins album, but as you may have guessed by now it turned out to be a
sound investment (no pun intended), and thats my story. I still don`t
know what that mystery song was, i expect it was on the Dog on Wheels EP,
so if anybody has bothered to read this far could you enlighten me
please. Well after all these months of watching and reading these pages i
thought i`d have 1000 question, but i only have one, if i think of
anymore i`ll let you know, probably in a few months!
In a few seconds i`m going to press send, i`ve got a felling i may have
the address wrong, oh what the hell here it goes..........

Nick Dastor wrote
"Hoorah for Martin and Amanda's dad..... The young and the old are
much better." He also spotted a mesage from David Moore:
"My copy of Telstar (b/w "Jungle Fever"!) came out in 1962, which would have
made me 6 years old at the time..
12 year old son and to really enjoy B & S gigs with my 19 year old daughter."
and remarked
"More old folk - triple hurrah!"
It's good that the list is expanding so rapidly because with people as old as
us three (and there may be more?), the mortality rate will be enormous! And if
somebody of 50 joined the list, how would Nick describe them, since we're "old"?
Nick also wrote:
"I have no idea what Stormbringer is, but I'm sure it
rocks like a beast. There used to be a bearded Maths teacher at
school who'd lost interest in rock since Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin et
al. The only modern band he liked was The Smiths."
Stormbringer was a very gentle album by John and Beverly Martyn (Scottish?).
It came out c. 1969 and has a B&S-type tone (some of them are bound to know
it). John Martyn has made tons of albums since but I never cared much for his
solo efforts. Anybody know what happened to Beverly? The Smiths opened my
eyes, too, but in terms of certain songs and overall sound rather than a
particular album.
Nick also wrote:
"I enjoyed your horse tale, Martin. But God doesn't smile upon those
after a quick buck. In fact he drops delibarate red herrings to make
them look foolish. The devil is a better bet for gambling tips. A
horse called "Fashion Victim" ran at a meeting hours after Versace was
shot. It came in first at 20-1.after a quick buck."
It's back to Bible studies for some. What about the parable of the "talents"
or maybe the bucks in question there weren't amassed very quickly? Anyway, the
next time Versace is shot, I'll know what to do.
Finally
"Does your son like Belle & Sebastian?"
He's 7 and I'm afraid Christmas carols are more his cup of tea. He also sings
a version of "My Lovely Horse" from "Father Ted" (pity about the death of Fr
Ted/Dermot Morgan). But I wouldn't encourage him. After all, Mr Murdoch
sings; "Could I write a requiem for you 'n' your Dad?" As far as I know,
requiems follow death and there may be a subliminal message there to children
to commit parricide, then suicide. Amanda's Dad and David Moore better watch
out, too. I know that some will say it's actually "Could I write a requiem for
you when you're dead" because that's in the Official Website Lyric Sheet, but
that's not what he sings.

Shirley Watton from her velvet lined Art Deco apartment writes: please
would all subscribers to the digest remember that if they just hit
reply their replies will go into a black hole. For reasons too
tedious to relate (original list members will remember the Great
Sinister Crash of 1997 when everyone got 25 copies of each mail), the
reply-to address comes to owner-sinister, a Shirley who has no time
to readdress them. So you need to readdress to "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
I'm going to rehash the FAQ for the mailing list in due course with a
littl ehelp from others to better define what the majority of people
want from this list. I've had quite a lot of emails privately asking
me to do something so I'm going to have to get tough soon, which I
hate. For now I ask as always that everything thinks before they
send, that we avoid quizzes and number games and things not of the
heart or the ribs, that we don't slag each other off, and that noone
sends an excessive amount of one-line replies to things. Please
bundle up a day's replies into one email as much as possible.
Someone asked how many people is too many on this list. Well we're
growing at a scary rate (someone told me we have beaten the George
Michael list for members which frightens me for several reasons :)
and sometime I may have to do something like put all new subscribers
only on the digest. In the meantime I appeal to you all to save
bandwidth this end by sending out stuff that is genuinely
interesting, personal or funny.
Oh and finally everyone who doesn't use their porn name this week
will be banned - remember - pet's name + mothers maiden name.
