And speaking of depressed and beautiful voices ... although that album is inferior, "Afraid" from _Desertshore_ is probably the most touching moment in the history of P!O!P! music ... imagine the intimate atmosphere created by "The boy done wrong again" (my favourite B&S song) and think further ... further ... further ... Besides, how popular is the "Nico Icon" documentary in other countries ? I was pretty disappointed in what Katrina described as 'a special Scottish edition', actually turned out to be a block of about five Scottish videos. I liked the Orange Juice vid, and Snow Patrol sound okay (anybody going to the Attic concert on Saturday?). It was the first time I'd saw the entire DoW video, and I loved it. I've still not seen the 'La Pastie' video yet, unfortunately. BTW, when Sky One finishes broadcasting at night, they start playing music videos. I saw the video for LPG on it just before the Manchester gigs. Haven't watched it since, but maybe they play them quite often. Samiam The PIL song you heard was called "Rise" It was the centre of a particularly amusing marketing campaign. The single had a white sleeve with 'single' written in blue across it. It was also available as a 12" in a white sleeve with '12" single' across it. The album, surprisingly, had a white sleeve with 'album' written across it. Also available where a mug, poster and cassette. I'll leave you to guess what they looked like. Simon p.s. I love this band and when I saw them in London last year they played for more than two hours - now thats what I call value for money. "Songs For A Blue Guitar" is a classy album, but my favourite songs are "Micheal" and "Down Colourful Hill". And heres my B&S story. When I went to the Union Chapel gig last year, I went with my friends Joe and Phil - "..me and Joe and Phil" just like in "String Bean Jean"! (except we didnt have a bath together!). Finally I have found an excuse for contributing! I just love RHP and last summer I got a chance to see them at the Hultsfred Festival. It was just great, but typically, (almost) nobody else really seemed to understand their greatness. The same thing with B&S really, my best pop-loving friends cant really understand how marvellous they are. Nevertheless, their minds are probably not made for indulging in real grandeur. Speaking of RHP, I believe their best efforts so far are the Down Colorful Hill CD (especially Michael and Lord Kill the Pain) and Summer Dress from Ocean Beach. Moreover, you mustnt forget the cover of Kiss%s Shock Me. /New Jersey aint the whole world! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: my first post in a WEEK

Hi all. So many fascinating discussions I had to respond. For novel opening lines, I like "One Hundred Years of Solitude", but I can't remember the line, and I lost the book. It's something like: "Many years later, when he faced the firing squad", something something something. I also nominate a novel by my dad. The book's called "A Girl of Forty" and the opening line is: "'Why does everybody talk about the Virgin Mary,' Suki asked me. 'what about the Virgin Joseph?--if Mary never got around to doing it, neither did Joseph, did he?'" Other than that I have to say, I kind of find Hal Hartley pretentious (will all due respect to those who love him; we're allowed our opinions).... but no matter. I will come to England if there's a picnic this summer. I recommend an amazing book called "Fup" by Jim Dodge. Find it even if it takes some effort. It's about a duck who lives on a ranch with a guy and his crazy grandfather in rural California, and it's beautiful, hilarious, soulful, and mallardian in the best way. by Ari bye, Ari ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: The Monday Poem

With the shock departure of Northy from the list, I think we are all in need of spiritual succour. So in honour of the dearly departed I've decided to inaugurate the "Sinister Poem of the Week". Basically, drawing on from Tag's idea of the list as a daily fanzine, and also the fact that Sinisterines seem to be astonishingly well-read, I thought it'd be fun to have a regular feature every Monday. One of the frustrating things about my job is that I get to read lots of fantastic contemporary poetry, which I know lots of people would enjoy if only they had access to it. So in a spirit of "literary home-taping", I thought I'd choose some excellent new poems, in the same way that you might make someone a tape of a fantastic new group on a tiny label that no-one would've ever heard of otherwise. And of course this helps me feel slightly better about sending private email from work... Of course, it doesn't have much to do with B&S, and if enough people regard it as spam, I'll stop... But anyway... Paul Farley is from Liverpool. He's just won the Poetry Review New Poet of the Year award, and has a new book, "The Boy from the Chemist is Here to See You" out soon, published by Picador. For those of you who are either too young, or not British, Keith Chegwin is an ex-kids tv presenter who turned to the bottle. The poem deals with his early teenage appearance in a Roman Polanksi Shakespeare adaptation... You wouldn't say you sold your soul but learned your line inside a beating tent by candlelight, the shingle dark as coal behind each wave, and its slight restatement. "A tale told by an idiot..." "Not your turn, but perhaps, with time and practice...", the Pole starts. Who's to say, behind the accent and that grin, what designs you had on playing a greater part? The crew get ready while the stars go in. You speak the words you'd written on your heart just as the long-awaited sunrise fires the sky a bluish pink. Hello people, absolutely knackered at work this morning, had a bit of a rough weekend, how's everybody doing? Anyone bought any decent records recently, I need some tips for the moment as I've almost run out of things to buy.I've asked a few people that question recently and virtually all of them don't really have many ideas. It's a pain in the arse - have people stopped bringing good records out for the moment? What do we reckon then about this listy meet up thing, is May the decision, there's no reason why we shouldn't have more than one, let's face it, if it's good fun, we should have loads. London people, I'm a comin' down to London some time in the next month or so, so I'd like to meet you all (again for most of you). Katrina, sorry, never got a chance to listen to SnowPatrol at the weekend, as I said before I was horribly pissed all weekend, will have a listen some time soon.
