In a recent letter, Genevive said: <there was a heated (well not heated..lukewarm maybe) discussion about <topless bars and B&S...I don't know...stripping to B&S? I thought that music <ahs to be like 'happy birthday mister presidennntt...' i mean,whenever I <hear photo jenny..i jsut do soem cheezy finger snaps...but then again,(uh <oh..another story....I guess if you sung Photo Jenny like 'theyy....got <...the ooh ahhh..druuuggggggggs...*wink wink* i could *fling off goes the <clothes!) use them...but then i don't need any...' and so on and so on.... <and ummm... Actually, as odd as it may seem, it's not like that at all at least where I work. Noone dances to that sort of thing anymore, maybe in films and in the 50s but that time is gone. It's just techno and heavy metal mostly. But not for meActually for me it's got more to do w/performance than nudity. Anyone can take their clothes off, right? But it takes work to make a song that does't lend itself to that sort of environment work. See what I mean? If one can successfully dance to something noone else would think of to dance to and coincidentally something she loves, then she's got one up on those who stick w/general heavy rotation hits. In that one, they've never heard it before and it doesn't fit the bill of what they may expect, therefore it is going to attract attention (be it positve or negative) to the one dancing to it. Thereby resulting in being seen(which could result in tips) or at least by expressing individuality in a place where one is expected to be void of mind and personality. Also, if one has the advantage of having strong emotional attachment to a particular song and goes out on stage and acts out the way it makes her feel the performance can come out far better than it would if she were dancing to something that just has a good beat. Therefore, I would say that it is at least for a rare few a form of art and interpretation in a performance setting that does not have the status that theatre or modern dance has, but if you use it in that way, it can come out well. Hi, Yeah, I also had the chance to talk to Stevie after the show in SF and he was so nice and became really embarrassed when I told him that I haven't liked a band as much as B&S since the Stone Roses. Then he said something to the effect that he gets upset when he talks about the Roses, because they were so important to him when he was younger, and look how everything turned out... Also playing with the BMX Bandits was Sushil the bassist, who used to be in the Soup Dragons! He was also really nice and talked to myself and my friend for an hour after the show. It was great. The Judybats? Now there's a name I haven't heard in years! That is a band that I never personally liked (but they had their fans) that was out of my hometown, Knoxville,TN. They filmed one of their videos on a friend of mine named Bill Harper's farm about 5 years ago. Very sweet poppy stuff, actually. One of the guys from that band is now a server at a bar I frequent. He's not been the same since their breakup. I always remembered them to be quite full of themselves and pretentious, although now it seems they've not much to be pretentious about any longer. So it goes in the music industry I suppose...a hit one minute, starving artists the next. I have been wondering if anyone could tell me why my chat software isn't working. I've read the directions, but it won't even let me sign on. It says valid name, but there is no data or something. Anyway it tells me to try to connect w/a different server. Sinister: Judybats; Eddie Vedder shocker. He is happy! I'm feeling better now...

The quote at the bottom of this e-mail reminded me of the Judybats 'Daylight'. It's an amusing tale of a girl who loses her boy and then disaster strikes, the verse goes: 'She slipped up on daylight crack in the sidewalk she up and dissappeared all the people gathered around said "Gosh, we really liked that girl"' The Judybast is another band I'd recommend, especially to the European contingent because the Judybats were popular on college radio in the states, but I don't think word got across the Atlantic. Before I forget, did anyone catch Eddie Vedder on MTV the other day? He declared that he's not pissed any longer!!! Record execs are now shaking and trembling. Calvin Klein just changed their marketing strategy and will no longer use unhappy/brooding/aloof looking models or concepts. Electronica was not the huge hit that was supposed to sweep America. Americans could not understand what the hell Keith Flint was shouting. What do we do now? What's the world coming to? Will the air waves now be filled with happy bubble gum pop? Sinister: London calling, yes I will be there too

I'll be in London from Thursday through Sunday/Monday (2/12 - 2/15). I will be staying in the Kensington area, I think the tube stops are Bayswater/Queensway or something like that. Is anyone getting together for a show during that time frame? I'd like to meet some people from the list. Don't be shy, I'm harmless and playful. You can ask the Washington DC Sinistereans...well then again they might not back me up on that one :-). If no one is getting together, can someone please give me a list (or web address) for good places to catch some bands, good indie record stores and theaters, cool clothing places, groovy book stores, etc. I would really appreciate it. Sinister: BMX Bandits in San Francisco

good afternoon, just a short introductory entry from a fellow b&s admirer. my name is brian and i live in san francisco. last night i was lucky enough to go and see the bmx bandits play at a very small bar here in town. lucky, not because i found the bmx bandits worthy of my adulation, but lucky because the lovely stevie jackson was in town performing with them. i don't suppose it would be a very good idea to concentrate on the bmx bandits performance, since i'm sure nothing i would have to say about it would make me any new friends. is that general enough? stevie, however, was definitely the star attraction at the show! both times his name was mentioned by the singer, the crowd responded lovingly; quadrupling the amount of applause any of the other band members received. so sorry. my friend jane and i hung out afterwards and talked to him briefly. he was so pleasant and polite and said he was a little bit embarrassed by all the attention. there were a few other people there with b&s merchandise to be signed and he was very chatty and happily obliged. most promising, is suppose, was the mention of some b&s live dates possibly in june. yay! so there you have it. i think it would be great to organize a picnic here in san francisco to coincide with the ones going off in other countries. any bay area folk into the idea? brian ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Happy now? You're all responsible. You with your callous barbs, your trendy lefty politics, and your oh so clever put downs. He was young, innocent beautiful. Who else could have turned us on to the joys of Catatonia, drawn our attentions the filth peddled by Arab Strap, and made us think twice about the terrible problems of those people more fortunate than ourselves? Sinister: Out with the old, in with the new.

Hello fellow appriciators of B & S. I have been on the list for a few weeks but this is my first mail. On the subject of converting friends to Belle and Sebastian, I was actually converted to them by someone on this list. My friend Richard started raving about this band I had never heard of late last year. I heard them quietly in the background in his car and thought, this is quite good but nothing really special. The next week I was in HMV in Kingston with money in my pocket wondering which CD to buy. When I walked past the B section, 'If You're Feeling Sinister' seemed to stand out to me and I picked it up straight away and bought it. At the time I wasn't quite sure why but I have never regretted it. It must surely be the magic of Belle and Sebastian. When I got home and was able to listen to it properly on my own I understood the true brilliance of it. I think Belle and Sebastian's music is very personal and does not work as background music when you are with a lot of people - much better to listen to on your own. The song that really appealed to me first and made me think what a brilliant band they are was Judy and the Dream of Horses. I immediately phoned Richard up to ask him if I could borrow his B & S EPS which I also thought were excellent. If it wasn't for that impulse buy in HMV I wouldn't be writing this now and I would still have been listening to Radiohead, ignorant of the existence of B & S. Richard has lent me his tape copy of Tiger Milk for the weekend and although it sounds rather like 'If You're Feeling Sinister', that isn't really much of a criticism as they are much worse things it could sound like and it does predate IYFS. My friend is infact Richard 'Northy' North. I go to the same college as him and do A - Levels but I do not share his strong right-wing politics (which I am not sure if even he believes in). I do share his appreciation for Catatonia and the Lightning Seeds (who I was into before him and are truly marvellous live). I also went to Catatonia gig with North the other night and Catatonia were good despite what North says. I would also have to disagree with his point about Superstar being 'dull, dull, dull'. On the tube on the way home from that gig, a homeless guy made a speech to the train carriage we were in about his situation. He said he was in a catch-22 situation, no fixed address means he can't get a job or dole, and no job means he can't get a fixed address. He said he had worked all his life and had been in our position and didn't like being bothered by the likes of him. But if anyone could spare any change, food or even water it would be greatly appreciated, and if we couldn't or didn't want to, that was okay too. I had no money or food on me but North had money and gave none, nobody gave the man anything. He didn't complain, he just went onto the next carriage to give his speech again. After he was gone North was complaining saying he hated people like that - making him feel guilty, laying the 'guilt trip' on him. He also said the guy had no right to do that to him. How selfish is Northy? Oh dear, did the homeless guy make poor old North feel guilty. Perhaps if he felt guilty then there was something to feel guilty about. I felt sorry for the guy and wished I could help but did not hate him for talking to us. This is not a personal attack on Northy, I am just letting you all know the truth. I do not need to make the obligatory first mail to the list request for Tiger Milk as I already have a copy (even though it isn't mine). As North will be gone from the list for a while, you will have to make to with me. I am less controversial but also live in Ashford which makes me a perfect Northy substitute. If anyone wants to see what Northy looks like (Tag may be curious) they can mail me privately and I can tell them where on the internet to go (yes Northy is out there somewhere in cyberspace). I would be really interested to hear Beck's interpretations of any B & S songs. I think he would probably ruin most of them but it could work. It would be very interesting.
