Not that I mind B&S becoming famous or going on top of the pops, it's just
that I hate the thought of all the people I've ever played them to and then
been told they were pants, coming up to me and telling me to listen to this
great new band. It happens.
Is anyone else embarassed by the fact that we have a popular music programme
with such a bad name? and that other people in far off lands are laughing
at our stupid '60's TV titles. 'Cos I am.

I'd love to see B&S on 'the Pops' but with the slight apprehension that
if they then rocket to the top of the hit parade loving their music wont
be the cosy convivial habit it is for true believers - but I wish 'em
all the best, mind. And Keith is right: having them on TOTP would be
fantastic by showing what kind of music can be produced these days. I'd
put B&S on immeadiately after some ne'er-do-well Britpop-by-numbers band
and see if the surly lot can stand the juxtaposition (for all you
wrestling fans) with the toppermost of the poppermost.
The most unlikely TOTP moment I ever remember was when New Model Army
smashed into the top 45 at number 44 with No Rest. They had to stick
tape over the obscenities on their T-shirts (which were actually
advising people not to take Cocaine) and Slade the Leveller (crazy name
crazy guy!) prowled the stage snarling at some teeny-bopper in yellow
dungarees who insisted on jigging about clapping her hands above her
head like they were Black Lace.
Oh the majesty of Rock - the pageantry of Roll...

Well, I enjoyed B&S. The only problem for me was the sheer volume of
people of the place - to be expected at a free gig, I know. Much of the
B&S music is really quiet, or starts really quiet and the noise of
people talking often drowned them out (where I was standing anyway).
But what I could hear was good. It seems like ages ago now - maybe time
has altered my perceptions. Monica Queen done a turn as well. And I
was standing next to Eugene Kelly. He looked bored. Douglas BMX Bandit
introduced them (hee hee, it's all coming back to me now) as the hippest
kids on the street, or something like that, which I recall finding
amusing.
The big downers were I had to wait for about hour to get a pint of QM
beer, which tastes like pish (tip: If your in the QM go for bottled
beer). And I had to listen to the Pastels (I admire the Pastels unique
placing in Glasgow pop culture and am even thrilled when I buy records
out of John Smiths on Byres Road and get served by Stephen Pastel. I
just think his music is shite.)
I think the concert was better than it would have been if it was in the
park. Hey I shouldn't complain though. It was free B & S for me.
Anyone else?
Chris

What's a bit of a worry is that the new EP contains 5 songs, at least not all five of them are listed. 5 separate actual songs on a single disqualifies them from the singles chart and makes it viable for the albums chart. Hopefully the chart compilers will not notice this.
The other question is: do you reckon they'll go on top of the pops if it does chart? I mean, they don't even give photographs away never mind go on the telly! It would be totally brilliant since as the Duke says, they are a complete antidote to most of the stuff around at the moment, and I don't think I'd ever have seen a band of their like on TOTP before.
Cheers,
Keith.

Some minor mailing list/WWW news: I have updated the guitar tabs
*again* with more from S.A.Clarke (Lazy Line) and Ben Ufton - thanks
to them. Still looking for Tigermilk tabs... :)
I have also added the superfluous(?) ability to see who's on each of the
mailing lists at the click of a mouse - as some of you are bothering
to send majordomo requests to find out. You can also see a quick and
dirty breakdown of who's from where - which makes me mention that
there's now a staggering 12 people from France on the list - well
done. Waiting for Australia and Sweden to catch up...
It's also worth reiterating that I can't see inside sites called
"*.net" - they could be from anywhere so some people won't be counted
from their own countries. If anyone cares...
All this stuff is available at
http://www.majordomo.net/sinister
as always.
Oh yes, and if anyone would like to volunteer to run a Showaddywaddy
list separately - I had a look on www.ubl.com and there isn't one yet -
so a nice job for somebody :) I'd love to but there's too much real
work to do here just now....
Finally I mailed Rough Guides re. the proposal to do an entry -
nothing back yet. I wanted to know if we should bother, i.e. what
criteria they use to decide if a band makes a worthwhile entry, other
than writing quality. Hmm...

To those who question the excellence of the gainsbourg tribute in
Cottiers, let me say that it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. I am,
however, struggling to think of what was actually my favourite performance.
But hasn't the lead singer from the bathers got a great voice?
So was the concert in the QM good? After wandering through Kelvingrove
park in the rain I retired to a nearby pub and didn't find out about the
changed location until it was too late.

Another clue: The Star Wars t-shirt was mentioned in a
message to the list some time ago. The wearer was at a party
in Edinburgh, probably nicking cans of lager and frightening
the girls....or was that Keith?
Quizmaster Pete, the Bob Holness of indie pop.

Yeah - that was me I'm afraid, *Mystery B+S bloke* was very well behaved in fact, I was razzed up to the eyeballs and making a tit of myself. A friend of mine's still got a photo of me hugging *Mystery B+S block* and now *Mystery B+S bloke* seems to think I'm their biggest fan - which is all very nice, I do totally love them, but when you've got people naming their children after the band I think that qualifies as pretty nutty fandom...
Anyway--- another hint if you like if my mail this morning shouting about who it actually was passed you by... He's got a nice jacket, reminds me of that guy.... what was his name again, Maher? Something like that.
Cheers,
Keith.

I know it's normally Paul's job to complain about things, but it's not the
number of irrelevant postings that's cluttering up my e-mail (because most
of them are still either amusing, interesting, or about Shawaddywaddy);
it's when I keep getting 2 copies of some of the messages. When people
reply to all, which is the easiest way for most of us to reply, could they
remember to delete the other names from the send-to field? At the moment I
keep getting one copy from the list and another copy by being named in the
send-to.
Cheers,
Stuart G
