Whoa, whoa, whoa...Judy Blume "wasn't a great literary figure?"
are you dosed?
Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great changed my pre-teen life! I think her
collection of books was seminal in any girl living in the US (I can't speak
for abroad) in the early-to-mid-80s. Was "Then Again Maybe I Won't" as big a
deal for guys? Anyway...I haven't heard the new EP, but I just wanted to
step in in Judy's defense.

For all Belle & Sebastian lovers,
This is my first ever letter to this list, so if you dont read it I will
be very unhappy.
A BIT ABOUT MYSELF - I am a university student in Melbourne, Australia
studying English (fiction writing and children's literature) and
Psychology.
HOW I HEARD ABOUT B & S - Whilst reading an English music magazine in
January I saw a review of Sinister and liked the description of the music
and the name of the band. About 6 months later I was looking through the
'B' section of a music import store and stumbled upon the album, even
though I had never heard any B & S I had an impulse to buy it, so I did,
fell in love on the first listen and have no desire to scale down the
relationship.
FAVOURITE SONGS are "Seeing Other People", "Fox in the Snow" and "Belle
and Sebastian". What I really love about B & S is the atmosphere of the
music and the imagery that goes along with it. When I listen to the
songs they mean something, they can live on their own, and they have a
specific voice - or feeling - or an atmosphere. I think of
relationships, life, country. I think of young, deep, dreaming, sad,
happy. I picture the songs in my mind and they seem so there, and real
and alive.
I dont know if I explained that very well but that is why i like B & S.
Other music I like includes Saint Etienne, Suede, Smiths, Sinead
O'Connor, Nick Cave, Pulp, Placebo, Tricky and (at the risk of being
struck off the list), I love BiS.
PROFILE OF B & S IN AUSTRALIA is practically nil. I have never heard any
of their music anywhere - on TV or radio. I have never seen a print
article, except for one good review of Dog on Wheels in a small
alternative magazine. However, IYFSinister is just now appearing in
shops after being given a local release and hopefully all this will
change. But Australia being Australia I am not expecting enough exposure
to prompt a tour.
I have been reading the mail on this list for a couple of weeks now and
enjoying it immensely. This site is the only way I can keep up to date
with what is happening in B & S world.

I get a special pleasure listening to the belle &
sebastian at work, because I work at a record label
which is known for especially loud and heavy acts..i'm
the only one here with any pop sensibilities and an
appetite for indie rock ... so I annoy the hell out of folks
around here with it....not to mention that there is a
woman at the company I work for who used to work for
the Enclave and she absolutely hated the "Sinister"
album when she had to promote it, so I really get under
her skin when I play anyhting by B&S.
Auhtors/books: John Fante, William Maxwell, Flannery
O'Connor, "Hunger" by Knut Hamsun and "Paddy
Clarke Ha Ha Ha" By Roddy Doyle.

Here's a brain teaser:
At last count there were eight members of Belle and
Sebastian.
Can you match each member with their favourite food from the
list below?
1: Halal chicken, unpeeld potatoes and broccolli. Fish on
Fridays
2: Alphabetti Spaghetti
3: Magic mushrooms and powdered rhino horn
4: Spangles, Jaffa Cakes and Monster Munch
5: Exotic fruit and rice pudding
6: A cup o' tea and a slice o' cake
7: Anything advertised by Bernard Cribbins
8: Trumpet-shaped turnips.
Answers on a postcard, please.
Well, we need something to do now that the Ink Polaroids
contest is all over bar the shouting.

Re: Bored at work - can we get a show of hands? Listening to B&S really
does help me get through my stressfilled day...
Wow- as I was typing, the woman who sits at the next desk walked over
and said "Is this a CD?" (I'm listening to Sinister on my CD-rom) and I
said yes, and she asked who it was, and I told her. She said, "You know
I hum this on the train, and hear it in my sleep, you listen to it so
much." I began to apologize for annoying her, and she said "No, I want
you to tape it for me."
Books: I like and recommend Fredrick Exley.

I was browsing in Virgin the other day, and I came across three records by
the Bathers. One of the records was called Kelvingrove Baby, and I seem to
remember they were on the bill of the B&S show in Glasgow earlier this
year. Are they any good? They're on Marina, who I think did that tribute to
Postcard a while back, which is probably a good sign. I need advice because
my bank account dictates that I can't be quite as cavalier in my record
purchasing as I would like!
On a literary tip, I remember reading in an interview in Select that Stuart
was heavily influenced by the work of CS Lewis, the Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe guy. Though I'm damned if I can see any evidence. Some of the
songs remind me of the short stories of Lorrie Moore, however.
Finally: Hal Hartley. I remember when The Unbelievable Truth came out in
the mid-eighties, Hartley was saying that he was trying to do in cinema
what the Smiths and other English indie bands were doing in music. So with
his influence on B&S, the debt seems to have come full circle.

I'm surprised no-one's raised this point yet [Ha! Says he who will soon
find he's missed ten screaming rants saying exactly the same thing.....],
but it is my considered opinion that 3, 6, 9 Seconds Of Light EP *is not
yet out*.
If I'm wrong I'll be pissed off, both for making a prat of myself and
missing the opportunity of getting it today - anyway, the bloke in Virgin
said that they had *sold out of copies*, but seeing as it was still only
1.30, and let's face it, few people see B+S like they see Elton John, so I
presumed that he was wrong. I phoned a smaller Indie-type shop, and they
said that it had been *put back a week or so*. So have I missed an
important announcement on the list, or what? Katrina - what the hell?
To put it another way, has anyone else actually got a copy which they
purchased in a shop today?

The Symposium bit is a joke, right?
[Keith Watson]
Aye - it does put a bit of a downer on it doesn't it... Symposium are severely pish - every few years or so, there's a new band that are proclaimed the greatest band in the universe, just cause they play a bit like the Undertones and shitloads of kids jump up and down and mosh at their concerts. Symposium would say can happily be filed under Ned's Atomic Dustbin (1997 model).

That book was written by Peter Hoeg. I haven't seen the movie, but I
know it has already been made - it had a pretty limited release earlier
in the year (definitely in the States and I'm almost certain I saw it
advertised here in Sweden - I know that Gabriel Byrne is either in it or
produced/directed it ).
