I'm so sorry I didn't see this message until now! My husband and I would have loved to have shown you the sights of L.A. Did you make it to the show and around the city okay? The Bowl show was FABULOUS. Legendary. :-) I'm so happy we had box seats on the floor, so we could be right in the thick of it. Bonjour, I feel all French listening to Yann Tiersen's masterpiece, the Amelie soundtrack - it just urges a cycle ride into the sunset, baguette over shoulder, beret perched jauntily atop la tete, to go on strike for ever. Vive la revolution! Ken tried to chivy the list into action in a bid to reclaim the once cherished fraternite of this fine parish by way of glorious satire. After such a fine display, I felt utterly compelled to post. BELLE AND SEBASTIAN Don't they seem to be playing a lot. Constantly hopping over land and water. If any of you want to hear them playing live somewhere in America, I think Washington, go here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5235927 The lovely Iain Baker of XFM told us all. I bought the single last week and, though not surprised, was a bit bemused at the quality of the b-sides. Combined with Stevie's effort on the Funny Little Frog single, they have to be amongst the weakest songs the band have ever put out. I still can't get into the last couple of tracks on the album either - ...Cup Of Tea just makes me hum Big John Shaft and ever since Archel mentioned that Mornington Crescent was an Oasis b-side, I haven't been able to disagree. On the plus side, all the records still make me tingle. I should stick on TWATTYBUS and remember what glorious times they were. CAMERA OBSCURA I went to see them in Leeds for the first time last month and what a lovely affair it was. Despite coming on stage half an hour late, they charmed the pants off everyone. Traceyanne did look like a rabbit in headlights though - I wonder why after 10 years she still seems so very uncomfortable with the idea of performing in such a well loved band. Indie boys were going weak at the knees LILY ALLEN Apparantly she is the new "MySpace sensation", elected straight from the streets in the greatest music democracy. But as Stuart (Tales of Jenny guitarist and former sinisterine) pointed out to me, she is not exactly from the streets, she's Keith Allen's daughter. I can't help but be suspicious. PICNIC What's this about a picnic? Was I not paying attention to that bit. It's been years since I trundled down to the smoke for pringles and red knickers - what a lovely idea. I go down quite a lot for band practices these days (shameless plug - www.myspace.com/talesofjenny - straight from the streets and no relation to Keith Allen) so I might be able to make it along. Please repost details if there are any - merci! BAPPS TRAINS Woah! I saw the link at the bottom of Rachels message and decided to investigate - Bapps makes models of the Metropolitan Line in Lego! If a cooler thing has been done, I've yet to see it. There're even little videos - you should really take a ganders BIKE I think it's time to go and have a bike ride along the river and out into the countryside of North Yorkshire. Hello Sinister!! I must say that Ken Chu is still impressing me with his clever keystrokes, even after all of these years! Most of my knickers are red, so I'm sure to have a clean pair to wear to a picnic next month, not that anyone will really know (whether they're red OR clean!) I usually try to avoid being photographed in pants on social outings but mostly because there's no way I could look better than Ken does in undie photos, the beefcake. So you'll just have to take my word for it. A couple of weekends ago, Ken and I were walking along the seaside discussing the raging music scene in Hastings. Robster took a photo of Gaylords Hair Centre. Ben ate jellied eels. Marianna and Ken frolicked in the sea. We decided that if this were five years ago, we'd probably post something about it on Sinister. I used to post anything and everything here. Mostly I just talk to people now, but I realise that most of these people are the same I met through this list. I guess that's part of the reason why I left posting for so long. Like Ian, I was recently listening to The Boy With The Arab Strap and feeling really nostalgic and happy. I think TWATTYBUS withstands the test of time. Ben and I heard a song or two from Dear Catastrophe Waitress again after not hearing it for quite a while and I recall, I think we both kind of like it. I wonder what The Life Pursuit will sound like in three years ... or eight years? Actually, I've been wanting to post ever since The Life Pursuit was released, about a strange picture I get in my head when I hear "The Blues Are Still Blue". I have an image in my mind of washing machine races, where people put an off-balance load of laundry in a couple of washing machines and when they start them, they shake so much that they "walk" and the winner is the one that crosses the finish line first. I must have seen it on tv or in a film, probably when I was a kid. That's what I think of when I hear that song. You know, laundrette, place a little bet ... yep. I told Ben about it and he thought I was a little screwy, too. But I'm not embarrassed. If anyone is going to appreciate it, it will be someone who still reads Sinister posts. Anyone? Anyone? I asked about a digital version of the new 7" b-side, and after some googling I found http://www.bleep.com, which sells non-protected MP3s (as opposed to DRMed files) and doens't restrict sale to the EU or USA. (I problem I find with most download sites is that you can't buy them if you're outside of those two territories) So there you go ... I know have a nice, legitimate copy of "Baby Jane" downloading for the princely sum of US$1.35. Hurrah. OK, I'll shut up now. Also, for all of you who are going to see B&S in New York this coming week, Camera Obscura is playing next Friday, July 7, at the Bowery Ballroom, which is a very nice venue to see a band... and tickets are available.
