I'm still working out the kinks of sending stuff to the list...they
keep bouncing. Anyway, the Post covered Belle and Sebastian's visit to
New York last week in their usual fashion. Happy reading. Whoever
spots the worst errors first wins a prize. Okay, not really.

AGED SCOTCH - BELLE (and) SEBASTIAN'S 10TH BIRTHDAY
By MARY HUHN
When Sarah Adams, the violinist in Scottish folk-pop band Belle and
Sebastian, describes the group's new rehearsal space - just a mile
walk from her house - in Glasgow's West End, she talks about the good
greengrocers and curry restaurants nearby.
And when guitarist Stevie Jackson talks about the changes in the
10-year-old band, he practically whispers in your ear, making it feel
like you're sharing a cup of Ovaltine with him, rather than talking on
a phone an ocean away.
Such comfort and homey-ness is what you'd expect from this
once-reclusive cult band, and, at the same time, not what you'd expect
at all.
The band has never had a significant hit in the U.S., yet they figure
big in the minds and hearts of their fans (who might be shocked to
hear of slim sales - a sure sign of a true cult following).
The group's latest tour brings them to the Nokia Theatre on Thursday
and Friday, just a few weeks after the release their fifth studio
album, "The Life Pursuit."
While some bands turn from democracy into dictatorship over time,
Belle and Sebastian has done just the opposite. Co-founded in 1996 by
Jackson and the group's main singer and lyricist, Stuart Murdoch, the
band has become more of a collective.
"Once, Stuart would play the central instrument and we'd fill in
around that. Now sometimes Stuart doesn't even play," says Adams.
"It's less of us just backing up a lead instrument and becoming more
of band."
With a rehearsal space all their own, the band has the luxury of
hanging out, continuously working on songs, instead of bringing
finished songs to studio recording sessions.
"In the first five years, usually whoever had written a song knew
where the chords and verses were and would hand out different parts
for the different instruments to fill in," says Adams, 32. "Now, for
half of the record's songs, when they were brought in, they were
something that would hard to be called a song."
The members have also grown closer - in age.
"We're all kind of more equals now," says Jackson, 37. "When we
started, some of us were in our mid-20s and the youngest were
teenagers. The gap was enormous. Now everyone is pretty much in their
30s."
In those early days, Stuart worked as a janitor in a church and live
upstairs in a dingy, rent-free flat, where the group would drink tea
into the wee hours and make big plans. "Every now and then we'd have
to put the chairs out for the bingo ladies," recalls Adams.
It seems almost surprising to them they've come so far, which just
adds to their charm.
"We didn't become pop stars because of winning personalities and
hairdos," says Jackson. "People were drawn to the songs and the
characters. There's a magic to them."
With the latest disc, the group is inching beyond its signature
twee-pop sound and the '60s - moving almost into the '70s with
glam-rock and danceable soul now in the mix. It's also striking that
there's no string section - the songs evolved without it.
And the group's cultish fans will agree, there's still magic.

When they played the Congress Theatre last time, a list meet was set
up at the Pick Me Up Cafe. I met some awesome kids there, but I stayed
in touch with only one: Jason.
Is anyone planning one? Does anyone want to? Sinister meet ups have
always been fun for me especially since we threw a couple of picnics
in DC.
Either way, I am still psyched to see the band playing TLP songs!

Hello listers,
I'm a long-time lurker on this list but thought that I'd de-lurk for a
moment to give my two-cents about the show in Montreal last night. This
is just a little post I made to my blog about the show.
The show last night at the Metropolis in Montreal was terrific. It was my
second time seeing the band, the first time was last fall at the Across the
Narrows festival in New York.
The New Pornographers were great too. They primarily stuck to songs from
Twin Cinema, which was fine by me. Unfortunately, there were some sound
issues during their set. Mark always jokes that for an opening band, the
sound guy keeps the button "that makes you sound good" locked up until the
headliner comes on. In all seriousness, it was almost as if, when they
first started, the PA was too small for the room and the sound guy was
trying to find a balance between what sounded okay and what would be way
too loud.
Another thing I noticed about this particular crowd, at least in the part
of the club where we stood, was how rude everyone was. I'm not sure if this
a typical Montreal thing or just this show but people never shut the hell
up. Talk, talk, talk...all through the New Pornographers set. It was
actually distracting at times. We also noticed that many of the people
there didn't seem to know why they were there in the first place. They seem
to have little or no interest in either band (not to mention no familiarity
with the music) and rather pranced around a bit, "seeing and being seen."
It was odd. On the other hand, there was no smoking in the venue so, I
guess if the trade off for not smelling like an ashtray and not being able
to breathe was putting up with some chatty kids, that's fair.
The really great thing about the show, that I appreciated, was the
punctuality of it all. Belle and Sebastian took the stage around 9:30 p.m.,
just as scheduled. It was refreshing because I have to tell you, one of the
things I dislike about Kingston or Toronto shows is how late they start.
Anyway, they sounded terrific. Everyone in the band seemed really into the
show, really happy and genuinely excited to be there. I don't know if this
just how they normally are on a tour or if this is a "second day of the
tour" euphoria but I for one, appreciated it greatly.
From what I can remember, here is what they played (in no particular order):
The State I am In
Another Sunny Day
Seeing Other People
To Be Myself Completely
The Blues are Still Blue
Piazza, New York Catcher
String Bean Jean
Dog on Wheels
Mayfly
Sukie In The Graveyard
Electronic Renaissance
Funny Little Frog
White Collar Boy
I'm a Cuckoo
Judy And The Dream Of Horses
Your Cover's Blown (YAY!!!)
Jonathan David
I know I've missed a couple but that's what I recall just now. I was really
thrilled that they did Your Cover's Blown!
One sort of amusing but really sad thing I overheard last night:
girl standing to my left to her male friend, "is that guy out front, like,
the main guy?"
male friend to girl standing to my left, "um, yeah."
I'd love to hear about the Toronto show if anyone on the list was there.

hi all!
sorry to bother you about this, but there MIGHT be a chance someone is interested in two tickets for the b&s gig in copenhagen May 19th. right? oh well...
i think the new album is great btw. especially stevie's new northern hit! it will definitely be in my next dj-set (hm... next to james carr maybe?). speaking of dj-ing - things seem to be going in the right direction for chris jones' band! last friday i had the exquisite pleasure of dancing to both "tuesday girl" and "other boys" at my local indie club. needless to say, i ALWAYS play Tales of Jenny when i'm doing the record-playing! memo to all indie labels: sign them - now!
oh, and there's an academic essay on c86 over here: http://www.indie-mp3.co.uk/2005/12/c86-essay.html (twenty years ago this year, if haven't noticed.) seeing as b&s are often said to be inspired by the scene, although i fail to see the connection. except for the servants, of course. struan DID try recruiting david westlake for the band, you know. and the new servants comp to be released this month is the best news i've heard for ages!
anyways, i'm off to glasgow after the summer! will be nice to see those of you i met there last summer.
love,
chris
