Dear Sinister, in my humble opinion, Scott Walker is a GREAT BIG GOTH. Nothing wrong with that of course, most goths are FAR worse and can't even claim a decent vibrato for the life of them. At least Scott would rather be French than pretending to be a dour-faced TEUTONIC WARRIOR making wot I believe is called 'electronic body music' - arf, marvellous. Anyway, yes. Buy his records, they're only a fiver in Fopp. Start with "Tilt". Haha. Maybe not. Scotts 1-4 in order is a good a place as any, but then again I only own 1 *and* 4. And "Tilt". So, Belle and Sebby played a gig then? Cor. And your man played Tigermilk the whole way through at an indie disco? What's the world coming to. I wouldn't know, all I do is read Dr Who books and eat chip butties these days. Did they play "Rhoda"? Lots of talk ov the TV Personalities too. It saddens me to hear how terrible their recent gigs have been. Then again I suppose you don't take much time out to practice when you are in JAIL for god knows how long. Look at all the press Pete Doherty gets for taking a few drugz0r, nothing of the sort for Dan Tracey. No, I didn't see two page photoshoots of Dan all over my morning Metro, did I? I was amused to see in the Metro, btw, that people in Wales don't like new "roll neck" black police uniforms, because they are a bit too "fasc15t". "Black uniforms remind people of pre-war fasc15m in Italy and Germany", so said some Welsh Assembly chap. Spot the deliberate mistake, eh!! Sinister: Autumn in Edinburgh - the sun ain't gonna shine anymore...

...well actually it's pretty great weather today, excepting the usual north wind. Brr. Compelled to de-lurk once again in 2 months (wow) by James Laming's addition to the Scott Walker debate: "in this scribe's humble opinion scott could sing the phone book and make it divine." I bought the 'Boy Child' compilation in 2000 on a whim, having only ever heard a couple of Walker tracks before, and fell in love. My favourite song is "Time Operator" - he's crooning to the voice on the end of the talking clock about what a lovely couple they'd make - should I ever end up a lounge act singer, I'd sing it. Insane. The compilation's foreword makes the point clearly, as my belle at the time, Viks, hated his voice - Neil Hannon was commissioned for the intro and closed it "Unlikely as it may seem, Scott Walker is the musical equivalent of Marmite" [you love it or you hate it]. I'm firmly in the former camp. Glad to hear others are too. While we're singing praises, I have Stevie Jackson's XFM hijack set on CD from 2002, and boy howdy, he spins some excellent records on that show. if you email me i'll gladly (eventually) send a copy off! Glad to hear the Barbican was good; it even got a few stars from a Times critic. Damn (Rupert) Murdoch, he should be kinder to his namesake. 'Another Sunny Day' was a new song that sounded a little bit Country upon first hearing, and it was pretty good, too. 3. Electronic Renaissance was GRATE! even though Stevie didn't quite manage the end instrumental solo bit with a blowy device (action: KC to find out what that device was) 4. 'If you're feeling sinister' was very well rehearsed and I think lyrics were very rarely forgotten if at all during this. At the end of 'Judy and the Dream of Horses', there was a standing ovation. 6. 'Dog on Wheels' and 'The Boy With The Arab Strap' made me very grinny 7. Stuart sang the word 'wank' properly at the end of 'The Boy With The Arab Strap' 8. 'The Wrong Girl' and 'I'm a Cuckoo' made everyone stand up and dance ============================================================================ So yes, that was the gig. It was so so good. I was sitting there slouched on the (very comfy!) Barbican sofa, a beer in hand, thinking how good the sound was at the Barbican, how lovely the music is and how it was just the life and that if I had £25 on me every night and it's possible I'd go back and see the same thing over and over again. I'm properly reporting back because I seem to be reporting backwards too, the picnic was also lovely - so many faces turned up, together with their bodies - and we even made it to the top of the hill! It was very nice and I was particularly happy that we've eventually remembered the proper name of the things you bowl with in a game of bowls. And before the picnic Sam, Jo, and I saw STUART MURDOCH, and SARAH MARTIN, AND BEANS, AND IN FACT THE WHOLE BAND WITH LOADS OF THEIR GEAR* just walking down the street and through to the Barbican where they were to do their sound checks. Stuart was very thrilled to see us. "Hi!" I think he said. Sinister: pull out the map

Yesterday was the first day that maybe felt like fall, a slight chill in the air as I cycled in the morning. The sky was a totally clear blue, and stayed so throughout the day, even as it warmed up in the middle. That night I read, by chance, Geoff Dyer's description of the same day. It was neither summer nor autumn. The sun had none of the intensity of summer but the trees were still thick with green leaves. Today was even cooler, even closer to fall. As I rode I thought about why I like days like that so much. The first time I really noticed this feeling it was exactly the same time last year. That exhiliarating combination of things: crisp air, clear sky, the intimation of a brisk fall ahead. The first time fall made an impression on me was two years ago, having just moved to Chicago, and I think this is source of the positive connotations. For the first time I felt like I was where I belonged and things that I wanted to come together were. I had a job where nothing was expected of me and that paid me (just) enough to live on. I had a place I could afford, good roommate, good friends around, and a working bicycle. That was, and still is, really all I need. That fall I cycled incessantly, exploring the city that I had called my own for six years but never actually known. I rode all over the city, eating in dingy ethnic restaurants and riding through neighbourhoods that were fascinating solely because they were there and new to me. I made new friends and revived old friendships, and being anywhere else in the world never occurred to me. The soundtrack to this period was Dear Catastrophe Waitress, which I listened to incessantly at work. I couldn't afford to buy the album, so I would listen to it on a Dutch radio station, from front to back all day, for weeks on end, building up to finally seeing them live at the end of October. By the date of the show I knew every word to every song. One lazy evening I had even cycled out to where the show would be to make sure I knew where it was and could get there by bus. It's a cliché, but it's really true that the more you own and the more responsibilites you have the less free you are. One of the reasons I miss that fall is that there was such a feeling of aimless possibility, that surely anything might happen since I was in a magnificent city with all of my basic needs covered, so I had the perfect foundation to build on. Now, two years later, so much has changed. I am doingat workwhat I want to be doing, I am in school studying exactly what I want to study, I have my name on a lease of an apartment instead of just hanging out there until the demolition crew comes, and I feel like Gulliver, tied down in every way, barely able to move. Every time I think I want to leave, I want to escape, I have to think, No, I have class next week. No, I don't have enough vacation time. No, I don't know anyone who would want to do that. No, that doesn't exist in this shithole of a city. I think about leaving, not constantly, but regularly, and I am painfully aware each time that I can't. I worry what stifling this urge will do to my psyche. I don't want to get used to it, I don't want to become resigned to the fact that for the next two years (or maybe only 20 months, I hope) I have dramatically reduced options. And then what? Will I be too old, too debt-ridden from school, too resigned to not doing things, to take advantage of it and do what I wish I had done. Will there still be things I want to do? In as way this is all academic. Leaving is not really an option, I can't afford to in so many ways. But the possibility is always in my mind, and I don't want it to go away. Sinister: She Made Him Forget His Dreams

Sebastian had been dreaming again. Lisa was not the Belle he had been looking for. And in the end she had lost patience. Falling in love with imaginary people does have a tendency to make friendships turn sour. Half a year of hardly speaking a word, treading awkwardly around each other. That was how long it took. But now they are friends again. Conversing in a more relaxed manner than ever. Maybe it had all just been a bad dream. When Sebastian woke up the sun was in his eyes. It was summer. A time to ponder why windows have blinds and streets are paved with stone. Sebastian always greets the summer with anxious anticipation. It is a time when life weighs easy on his shoulders. Still, at its end he is always in worse despair than ever. With plans left hanging, dreams left unfulfilled, and girls left unmet. What Sebastian didnt know, was that this summer would be different. It was to be the summer he had always been waiting for. Suddenly he had friends to see, things to do, salt water to leave flakes on his skin as the sun made it evaporate. He went to see a band with four boys in their corduroys. There a girl had taken his hand. A herald of change if there ever was one. It was clear it meant nothing to the girl, but it gave Sebastian a boost of self-confidence. Whats more, he now knew who the real Belle of the town was. He remembers clearly the first time he saw her. Two years ago, a brief glance. As if she had stepped out of the cover of his favourite record. Then she had seemed to turn up every now and then. Turn up to make the tears well in his eyes. Sebastian couldnt have dreamed they would ever share a word. And now he found himself in the same city as her. Their paths crossed by accident. Belle was in a band, called The Budgies. Sebastian knew the boy with the drumsticks. So he went to see The Budgies play, if only to hear Belles voice. It felt warm and soothing as it lingered in his ears. These days Belle will stop and talk to Sebastian if she sees him in the street. But Sebastian would find love in someone he never knew. Their eyes met across a sunny lawn at a cancelled TVPs concert. As dusk came, nothing more had happened. Sebastian stood troubled with his hands on the handlebars of his bicycle. He said to himself: Sebastian, if you go home now you know the thought of her will keep you awake all night. If this had been a year ago, he would have straddled his bicycle and been a very tired boy the next day. But tonight was different. He recalled the feeling of a hand in his. It put a new meaning into Having Nothing to Loose. So he walked back, keeping his distance. Minutes passed as he gave her glance. Sebastians heart tought he was short distance runner. His body was aching. Then suddenly he was walking towards her. Lets not speculate about what he asked her. After all, he had never done this kind of thing before and his incompetence is excused. Anyway, the girl mustve thought his question rather cute as she asked him to sit down and talk to her. Sebastian left with dreamy eyes and a piece of paper in his hand. It had a name scribbled on it as well as a series of numbers. Soon as Sebastian started coming to his senses again he learned that the numbers proved more useful if dialed on a phone. He started doing so often and this resulted in many a rendezvous. And the first kiss. And the first mixtape. One day they spent on a blanket by the beach, listening to a song Sebastian had written long ago. A song about that very moment. It was every bit as perfect as he had imagined it. What more could he ever ask for now that he had held her in his arms? Its funny. Sebastian had always cursed his sorry fortune. Being no one and having nothing. But everything he had now was of his own making. He didnt know how hed done it, but he was glad he had. hello sory, this is one of those emails which takes about 20 seconds to compose ... I just logged on to Amazon to order a copy of the new Warchild CD, only to see that the B&S song isn't listed on their tracklist. Can anyone confirm that it's on the CD?
