I don't know anything about The Go-Betweens & suspect Shoot The Sexual Athlete to be replete with G-B's references. Someone In The Know should enlighten us all. Where is 96 when you really need him? Come on Cookie, fill us in.
I would never attempt to step in for Cookie when it comes to the Go-Betweens (or anything else, for that matter), but I finally downloaded the songs from the Peel session last night and well ... !!! First, thanks so much to David White for putting them up. The miracles of technology! The generosity of fans! No wonder Tom E always goes on about the community B & S has created. Did Nick D say it was like a rap? Well, I can see that. Stevie T mentioned the possibility of a C81 revival soon. Is this a part of it? PF talked about self-referentiality in songs. Leave it to Stuart to sing about songs he could bring home to his mum and dad. Influences left open like this - and then there he was, somehow, out of all that was good before him. And, finally, to hear his speaking voice! Stuart should really do a duet with John McKeown. In that voice! Or with Bjork, in his other voice! The other songs are really good, too. It was a great idea to have Sarah and Isobel sing together. That Sarah - she should sing more! '(My Girl's Got) Miraculous Technique' is a fine song. Like a hand closing 'round something beautiful and delicate. (Insert crass jokes here, and it will just become part of this joy!) Either way, you're losing it. So slow. And the line with "lazy eye"! It's weird that the magic came out again in a live performance. So you're never sure where you are with them. You'll wait forever, and you won't mind. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister@missprint.org.
