The films are usually promotional items, for distribution to places like MTV so people see the band and go and buy their product. The idea being that they make money out of record (or whatever) sales. On the other hand some bands make films because they're FUN. I saw the Lazy Line Painter Jane video the other week for the first time and it's hilarious! Whether B&S made their films for this reason or promotional reasons I don't know. Maybe D&K could tell us.
2. The band makes their money back by getting paid by MTV & other stations for the right to play them. If everyone had them on bootleg, no one would need to watch MTV to get them, so MTV wouldn't buy them, so the band wouldn't get anything for them.
See above. Not everyone CAN watch MTV. I'm not going to get to see this video, probably, unless someone lends me a tape of it, or I get told exactly when it's going to be on telly. I'm hardly out to defraud the band or record company just because I want to see a film of a band I love. If they did a load of promotional films for lots of songs and released them on video I daresay I'd buy it, now in that case they WOULD make money back from me.
3. Videos are copyrighted (of course, just like a movie or TV show) and the law is the law.
I believe songs are also copyrighted, so why overlook cassette tape recordings of stuff? Videocassettes are just like audio ones but bigger, they both store information by polarisation of the magnetic bits stuck to the plastic. You can't turn a blind eye to one and not the other. It's an interesting argument, I suspect that if you were to go exactly by the law then it would ALL be illegal, but if you're going to lend someone the video for 'Wicked' or do a tape of Tigermilk for someone, just don't shout about it to everyone and no-one's going to mind.
