Excellent idea, Ian, and very much in keeping with the general tone of Sunday's messages. Robert, Alistair and David remind me of a cross between the Why Don't You Gang and a man whose enthusiasm for all things pop enabled him to buy a farm and go horse-riding whenever he feels like it, top Radio One disc jockey Simon Bates. "It's very easy to criticise, not always quite so easy to find something positive to say", as Batesy used to say about the much-missed Poll Tax. Not to mention my own dear mother, whose catch phrase used to be "Why don't you make your own entertainment?" Nowadays she says, "Just as long as you're getting paid". Richard, it's not nice to call Porky Spice a "fat ugly whore" like that. She's a very nice young lady whose mother is from Huesca. And she's getting married to someone from Manchester United, a regular Busby Babe. As far as being inspired to go do something a little less boring instead goes, a long time ago some friends and myself had the bright idea of writing a fanzine. It was going to be great, it was going to have a top ten clubbers feature, we even got round to doing excruciatingly embarrassing interviews with top pop stars such as the charming Throwing Muses and kindly uncles and aunties of Sonic Youth. It was really good, I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought "what a great way to spend your time" but then everything went horribly wrong. Some of our correspondents were dispatched to the gruesome opium den of the Spacemen 3 dressing room, hoping to get some illumination from some of the greatest minds in the late eighties indie rock galaxy......"Mister Boom, if you were a pizza, what flavour pizza would you be?"...... About five fragrant minutes later Sonic spoke...."That's a.....stupid question." End of interview. End of fanzine. End of enthusiasm. I do like Sonic Boom though.
