Hello, As we are on the subject...... I have been listening to a bit of Northern Soul !! Well, to be honest, I know very little about it, so I went out and bought the "Wigan Casino Story" Volumes 1 and 2. Both are excellent.
Maybe I should buy more. But buy what ? I don`t fancy going to seedy holiday camps and paying 100 quid for a single (or spinning on my back either to be honest !). Anyone have any great insights into the murky world of Northern Soul ?
A murky dredged darkly majestic like world it is. From what I have read the band where in the throes of breaking up whlst recording A Northern Soul. They ended up splitting for a while........

.......Emotions I think of are oceans, flying, darkness, isolation and in some way sheer survival. Oh god this sounds like and undergraduate record review
....... Anyhow I digress. A Northern Soul is their best album, and a great title, for all it's majesty, it is northern soul.
I didn't really say anything much hear I guess, but I do recomend you all getting it, and then follow that up with a Dirty Three CD, and I will take to your with warmness.

I'd just like to waste everyone's time by saying this is the best message we've had on the list for a long time. I kept waiting and waiting for the punchline but it didn't come, and is all the better for that. Next time I see that album at a knockdown price I will snap it up as a tribute. Or get it taped. The other Nortern Soul is a bit of a murky world as well. I don't know how it is defined but it seems to cover just about anything you want it to. I've got quite a few of the Kent compilations and I like them a lot, not least because they represent excellent value for money. They are mostly uptempo things that go bum bum bum in a Motown or Fine Young Cannibals style, but there is also a CD entirely devoted to end of the evening smoochers for lovers in the dark. I haven't got it because I don't think anyone wants to snog with me for seventy-odd minutes. Most of the CDs cloudly proclaim the inclusion of singles that cost a hundred quid in holiday camps. There is also something called Southern Soul, so called because it is from the South. Volume Three of The Heart of Southern Soul describes itself as "gritty church-based vocals testifying to the joys and pain of sexual relationships", which brings us neatly back to Belle and Sebastian. More fun'n'frolics to be found at : http://www.acerecords.co.uk The good thing about these albums is you can listen to them loads of times without getting bored. There are also some fantastic fashions on display. How I long for a lifesize poster of Bobby Powell. Better still, his outfit. A collar the size of Concorde, big puffy sleeves, double breasted waistcoat and big fuck off flares. All in a lovely shade of orange. Intersted parties can borrow them from the Virgin Mega Library, tape them and then take them back. I still find that hard to believee. Don't you even have to make up some excuse about it being a present but they already had it? The times they are a changing. According to Phil Collins.
