Noting the Vic Chesnutt discussion of late, I cringe and recall my dumb ass faux pas with the FDR of Georgia rock. At a Bob Mould show a few years back, Vic was opening and I was crammed up front waiting for his Bobness, the god of sweet, sweaty melody. Well, I couldn't help but notice that Vic was tapping his foot as he warbled. Odd, I thought, because he is a paraplegic, no? Cruel instinct or a cruel hoax? I leaned over to shout my question in my friend's ear. I meant to discreetly say something like, why is his leg moving? Alas, the music cut out at a humorously improper moment, and so I was caught screaming "His leg is moving!" into the stunned and silent air. Yes, I was rewarded with an acute glare from Vic as I hung my head in shame. Someone else noted the greatness of the Silver Jews record. Uh huh. Dry as dust off the parched skeleton of Patsy Cline, a fellow Virginian. Then why does it fill me up everytime? Just as lyrically dense as B&S, but the soft drawl of y'all gets lost amid the phlemmy purr of the scottish burr, eh? I got the "Some Kind of Wonderful" soundtrack yesterday for two bucks. Version of J & M Chain's brilliant "The Hardest Walk" except it's the Johnny Hates Jazz remix, so big suxx to them. I'm sure some listee at somepoint has recast the Hughes ouevre with Belle and Seb. Isobel wakes up flat-chested and on the wrong side of the moors, with the awful lads from the Arab Strap trying to trick her into dating them. And Stuart is the Amanda Jones character: untouchable and dreamy.
