In an attempt to try and settle this discussion about whether Monica Queen is actually Isobel... She was in a band called Thrum. Many years ago they performed on British TV, on 'The Word', playing their rather fine single, "So Glad". I've got the album it came off - the only one that they made. It's a bit patchy but if anyone wants a copy I'd be quite willing to make them one... Thai-an wrote:

Sorry Anna, I think i emailed you personally rather than the list by mistake. My apologies.
NEWS A good place to find B & S videos is on Sky Hitmix in the middle of the night. I saw Lazy Line and Dog On Wheels in the space of one week. So I think they have a fan somewhere on there.
Does anyone like Frank Black? I always felt that he should have been a lot bigger. * as a member of the E.E. Cummings literary society, all this talk of his poetry got me hot and bothered enough to post on here as a newbie; perhaps not much b&s content but it seems that conversation has gravitated towards the literature corner.
amh wrote "ok, so he has to be held responsible for the fact that everyone and her cat now uses lower case letters, even tho that wasn't the point: cummings did use upper-case (as you'll know, having read the stuff: i guess i'm talking here to people who haven't) .."
well, yes, i have read cummings & realized that even his name is officially capitalized. i just thought i'd put my two cents worth that i think that eec is a wonderfully overlooked poet of the 20th century & everyone should try him out, if but once (i must say that his complete works are my bookshelf's pride & joy)
try out his 6 nonlectures if you're not into poetry, or if you get very ambitious, try out his biography 'dreams in the mirror' .

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence: in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me, or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me though i have closed myself as fingers, you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens (touching skilfully, mysteriously)her first rose
or if your wish be to close me,i and my life will shut very beautifully,suddenly, as when the heart of this flower imagines the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility: whose texture compels me with the colour of its countries, rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens;only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

I wouldn't worry about it. I once *did* write to Betty Boo. I sent her a page ripped out of Smash Hits asking her to autograph it, but never got a reply. Bitch.
I was seriously thinking about writing to her, I was really quite keen. Then in an interview in the NME or something they asked her about being fancied by people and she said, "Well, they're not going to get me, are they?" and I thought oh no! I've turned into a pervert! I was unemployed at the time. Anyway, I still think it's a great idea to write to Belle and Sebastian. Don't forget you can do it by e-mail. What could be simpler? You can also write to Quentin Crisp and William Hague MP, both of whom I have been in contact with. But they haven't been in contact with me.

If Hollywood were filming Belle and Sebastian: the Movie, who would play the members of the band?
Steve McQueen would be Stuart M? (or perhaps in a curel twist of fate, now that he's acting--Damon Albarn?!?!??) Sharon Stone, Isobel? uhmm... George Clooney twould be Stevie? Noah Wylie, Stu D? Claire Daines, Sarah M? uhmm... uhh. ahem.
Sorry.
But honestly, who'd play our erstwhile heroes/heroines, eh? Casting begins now!

No, no I didn't mean it like that. I like the idea of the list being a sort of daily fanzine though. Basically, I love it when people tell me with a certain passion about new things, but I get a bit narky when I hear such and such are good, no they're not, yes they, fuck off, wanker ... and so on. If someone writes I like Murray whathisfaace because he makes me feel like this ... well that's great. I may not agree - I mean I remember going out for a drink with someone I used to work with who loved opera. I don't, but the way this guy talked about it was very special. Errm ... yeah sorry, the list as a fanzine ... I like it!
The list is already a bit like a fanzine for me. I no longer feel the need to shell out for "real" publications, such as the NME or Q or The Face or anything of that kind. This is a major saving for me because they're all twice the price here. Having said that, I do miss a bit of breakfast reading. Had to make do with "Slaves of New York" this morning. Talk about the cutting edge! I don't often buy things people talk about on the list, but I do pick them up, turn them over, and think about it. I am one of those sad people who wanders around shops in the afternoon, horribly aware that the staff are thinking "Oh look, it's him again. Hasn't he got anything better to do? He never buys anything. I wonder if he's mentally unstable? Why is he looking in the back of "Uncut"? Why doesn't he just buy it? Doesn't he like Monkey Brown?"

I thought it was really good. I particularly like the way it makes you feel kind of dirty for about two weeks after. I certainly don't think it was easy. I couldn't do it. I wouldn't know where to start. And it's a long way from New Kids on the Block. And now Burt Reynolds has got two good films under his belt. And nobody says "squeal piggy, squeal!" in this one. And it features the godlike genius of ELO, which is really stirring, and God Only Knows, which is really moving in that context. Sorry to ramble, I am trying to practise what I preach.

Ok, I've been reading for two days now, and I have finally worked up the nerve to write something. I write from the beautiful metropolis (interpret sarcasm here, if appropriate) of San Antonio, Texas. The only music store in town that is not connected to a bookstore or owned by the Blockbuster corporation specializes in heavy metal, punk, and the like, so I have been piking up all of my B&S merchandise in Austin, about 90 minutes away. (A small price to pay...) Um, I think the Beanie Baby fad is finally starting to die around these parts. I'd love to hear Michael Stipe sing "Judy and the Dream of Horses" or Helium do a really creepy cover of "Beautiful," complete with video-game-esque sound effects. I love, love, love, love ee cummings, though my favorite writer is probably Scott Fitzgerald. Sorry if this is really boring; email is still very new and exciting to me, and I haven't quite figured it out.

This message has nothing to do with B&S so I'll just say that they are indeed the finest band on God's green Earth and get on to what I wanted to say.
I am a sad student boy and was last night talking about kid's TV as sad students do. HOWEVER, no-one in my flat remembers 'CAPTAIN ZEP', who was a super space detective, or something who around the galaxy solving mysteries.
Did he actually exist or have I just made him up.
He was indeed a super space detective, who detected which of the large cardboard cutouts "done the murdurs" as Taggart would put it. It was shite, so it only ran for one series, and as I remember, this was circa 1981.
