Yesterday, /me bought not one, not two, but THREE swinbeat/r'n'b type singles yesterday. What's happening to me? I even felt the need to make excuses at the counter - at least I had Joni Mitchell and Hefner to give a bit of perspective into my warped musical taste. Okay, one was "No Scrubs" which is one of the finest songs of the last 10 years, but the other two...A prize (okay, a guest list spot at the next Peasantfolding, as I've just this minute renamed Sinister's top P!O!P! extravaganza) for the first person to guess what they are... Which reminds me, I don't think I bigged up Youn for sending me a Venn diagram of Catholics, homosexuals, uncle Tom Cobbley and all, which won the prize even though (or perhaps because) I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. More maths in pop! My first cup of coffee tastes like overpriced corporate heaven in a cardboard mug. Not Starbucks though. Okay, hardcore book recommendation (which I think I've suggested before, but Laura quoting Steve quoting Zardoz reminded me) - "Orlando Furioso" by Ludovico Ariosto. Okay, so it's a thousand pages of densely-packed medieval Italian poetry (so Lucy Alder'll be okay then), but if you can find an English prose translation, you'll be overwhelmed and amazed and astonished in equal measure. It's like every tale of magic and chivalry ever, all intertwined into a narrative which resembles a bloated, magnificent soap opera, only with more blood. There's a lot of blood. For the Belle and Sebastian fans among you, it's a bit like an epic medieval Italian courtly version of "I could be dreaming". Yay! Jessica and Jygsaw Dave are back! Roll on the sinister old people's massive!
