First, if you haven't already, run out and buy a Prefab Sprout record. _Steve McQueen_ is a bit moody, while _Jordan: The Comeback_ is brighter in mood and is almost like a series of intertwining concept-EPs. Second, the real reason for this post. The new album by Eels came out not too long ago, called _Electro-Shock Blues_. An illustration of a tombstone in the booklet, inscribed with "Sing along at home", gives you a fair idea of the tone of the record. Even as E, the band's leader, sometimes gets dangerously close to self-parody and morose self- indulgence here, the witty lyrics and clever arrangements make for a surprisingly touching and oddly humorous album. Eels have a previous album called _Beautiful Freak_. E released 2 albums under his own name, _A Man Called E_ and _Broken Toy Shop_. Both are excellent, but I personally prefer _A Man Called E_. Pure pop with a great deal of class, wit, and sophistication. --Mark __ Burning Rome : SENSELESS CD on Mindfield Records MindCD03 Cathartium 14
