Moving on to acts who *do* occasionally venture, blinking fervently, into the big bad world, I went to see the Magnetic Fields at Ronnie Scott's in Birmingham last night. (That's industrial wasteland Birmingham in England, not the American one in, er, America). Ronnie Scott's is an odd place for a gig. People who have paid their tenner to watch the gig huddle around the back of the room straining to hear whilst corporate people sit at tables in front of the stage chatting whilst pretty waitresses bring them plates of food. Wasn't the French Revolution supposed to put a stop to all this? Anyway, Stephin was on fine form, starting with quite a few new songs before hitting the 69 Love Songs motorway, which left me with a nice warm glow, which I then greatly enhanced by leaving my departure for the last train out of Brum until what I calculated to be the last minute (start of third song in encore) and then running like a mad thing to the station.
