Hello List Andrew aka The Stoat was talking about the Looper album: 'I just wish some time had been taken to tune the instruments before it was recorded. I've heard that out-of-tune playing and singing can sometimes be used as an expressive device, but I'm not sure that this is what's happening here.' I know we're not supposed to talk about schoolwork or everyone gets very upset...but I'm writing a dissertation about B&S and other 'twee' music C86 stuff. I'm trying to pin down something within the sound of the music itself which makes it different from other indie music. The main thing I've found is this idea of imperfection, everything sounds home-made (often because it is) and it's as though they're trying to play wrong notes or not tune guitars. I think that the wrong bits are what's endearing about say Looper or B&S - it kind of enhances the beauty of the song. Does anyone have any other characteristics they think are specific to twee indiepop? Do you think the imperfect bits are by accident or design? It would be really helpful to know what you think.
