why is no one excited about tortoise at bowlie 2? granted, i can't imagine what they'd be like live, but i thought the same about stereolab...
I saw Tortoise at a somewhat open-air type place (re: it was inside, with trees growing up through what I remember to be a dirt floor and poking through big gapes in the sort of flimsy ceiling, their leaves catching the glow of city lights like so many stars); it was one of the nicest shows I've been to. Stereolab never fails to disappoint live either. I think it has to do with the fact that Laeticia and Mary can actually sing without funneling their voices through-- ?? whatever it is that people funnel their voices through to make themselves sound like Lush^1 or My Bloody Valentine. This makes all the difference in the world w/r/t live performances, I think. 2 cents from Kristen ^1 A funny story about Lush for anyone who's interested: a few years ago (you know, when shoegazing ruled the scene), two of my friends had monstrous crushes on Mickey and Emma, the girls from the band. They had the (mis)fortune of meeting the two after the show. One of said friends said something like, "I think you're beautiful" to one of the Lush girls (I can't remember which one). The girls started to laugh and blush. However, the horror of the story is that, without their voice thingies that made them sound all breathy and soft, they both had incredibly deep, scratchy, masculine voices and Beavis and Butthead-esque laughs. Totally incongruous with their pretty, pretty music and countenances. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
