hello folks, a couple of people have said they'd rather have seen the release of new b&s material rather than the repackaging of records that were originally released in 1997. the reasons behind the absence of any new b&s material seems to be explained in an article on the nme.com website, i've included it here as i don't think anyone else has sent it to the list yet. bye, kevan
WHY HAVE THERE BEEN NO NEW BELLE AND SEBASTIAN RELEASES SINCE 1998?
1999 started well for the Scottish media shy eight piece Belle and Sebastian, but almost after a year on from claiming the Brit Award for best newcomers the band have yet to release any new material. It now emerges that the reason for this may lie with the bands' maverick record label, Beepster Records.
It emerges that Beepster have been concentrating their efforts and capital into Beepsterworld, an indiepop theme park to be located just outside Dagenham.
This shocking news came to the attention of the NME after blueprints for the site surfaced in a folder marked "Confidential" found near to the waste outlet of the Beepster International Tower in Central London.
Further investigation reveals that development has already begun at the site, and that the 360 degree Looper is already complete. The Gentle Waves water ride is also well into development.
The Snow Patrol miniature railway will tour the site, dropping off it's passengers in a fibreglass mountain range, reminiscent of the French Alps, which is to be called the Belle and Sebastian Zone. There is some confusion over whether this has any connection to the French book and cartoon of the same name.
An anonymous source from within the construction team working on the site reveals that the project has not been without it's problems: "The Belle and Sebastian Zone in particular has been hit by a series of inexplicable and embarrassing delays, and the rollercoaster ride just seems to be going on and on forever."
Dagenham council have confirmed that planning permission was granted some months ago and describe the venture as "very exciting", whilst admitting to some nerves about the competition from Leatherhead's rival venture, the National Lottery funded Celine Dion Adventure Park, as reported in last weeks NME.
A Beepster employee told us confidentially that amusement parks are what the kids want, and it is expected that Beepster A&R man Mark Bones will be issuing a press release later this week.
