in Philly we called the mullet a "guido," and it meant less that you listened to country music and more that yer doorbell would chime "Eye of the Tiger" when rung and that you wanted to date a girl named Adrian, but it was sort of a faggy name, and you think John Turturro is the real hero of all of Spike Lee's flicks. To other matters:
And yet, when you dare to assert that something reveals bad taste, you get a whole host of people calling you a snob and suddenly you don't feel so liberal anymore.
What is "taste" exactly? Is good taste based on technique and an obvious display of craft. Which doesn't give a wide berth to your more compulsive or idiot savant types. And it's seems that there are plenty of people dying to be labeled as in bad taste-and they might have all the craft in the world but have chosen to turn their back on it. There are so many "tastes" in the world now, with so many theories and whims and fans gunning behind each of them that never again will history be in complete agreement over what is good or bad. Belle and Sebastian seem to be in sort of good taste, in that they're mild of manner and well-behaved, but consider how someone a bit more fuddy would consider "Seeing Other People" or their use of strings as ham-fisted and unsophisticated. Are they snobs? And "high" and "low" culture is so impossible to fret over, are you talking about the product produced or who produced it? The person behind the product tends to mean as much as, if not more, than what is actually produced these days. Because you know when Versace introduced his line of pre-stained panties that all notions went straight to mindfuck. Again it seems to go back to how much thought went into something beforehand. As I fretted once in front of a boyfriend over the Spice Girls, i.e. excellent pop but at what cost feminism?, he said: "If it makes your tits wobble then it's good." Oh, and that's squarely in the realm of bad taste, natch. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
