Basically, I love it when people tell me with a certain passion about new things, but I get a bit narky when I hear such and such are good, no they're not, yes they, fuck off, wanker ... and so on. If someone writes I like Murray whathisfaace because he makes me feel like this ... well that's great. I may not agree - I mean I remember going out for a drink with someone I used to work with who loved opera. I don't, but the way this guy talked about it was very special. Errm ... yeah sorry, the list as a fanzine ... I like it! The list is already a bit like a fanzine for me. I no longer feel the need to shell out for "real" publications, such as the NME or Q or The Face or anything of that kind. This is a major saving for me because they're all twice the price here. Having said that, I do miss a bit of breakfast reading. Had to make do with "Slaves of New York" this morning. Talk about the cutting edge! I don't often buy things people talk about on the list, but I do pick them up, turn them over, and think about it. I am one of those sad people who wanders around shops in the afternoon, horribly aware that the staff are thinking "Oh look, it's him again. Hasn't he got anything better to do? He never buys anything. I wonder if he's mentally unstable? Why is he looking in the back of "Uncut"? Why doesn't he just buy it? Doesn't he like Monkey Brown?" Someone wrote
And Boogie Nights is crap.
I thought it was really good. I particularly like the way it makes you feel kind of dirty for about two weeks after. I certainly don't think it was easy. I couldn't do it. I wouldn't know where to start. And it's a long way from New Kids on the Block. And now Burt Reynolds has got two good films under his belt. And nobody says "squeal piggy, squeal!" in this one. And it features the godlike genius of ELO, which is really stirring, and God Only Knows, which is really moving in that context. Sorry to ramble, I am trying to practise what I preach.
