It's easy to blame the demise on these bands (both of whom I was a big fan of - and still love a lot of their stuff) on their association with THE MAN, but surely it's not inconceivable that they just ran out of ideas, and would have gone down the pan anyway, regardless of whether they "sucked the corporate tit" (I think that's one of Matt Kaplan's?) or not.
