listening to music whilest going through such negative emotions (like a break up) then over time the music will act as a stimuli to those negative emotions, like pavlov's dogs.

I have heard that too but for me this has never been true. I always or at least during the past few years listened to music I liked when I was miserable ..and so far there hasn't been any negative feelings attached to any song, thaknfully ... But music does help ...
