Sinister: I wish I was at home with a big bag of potato chips ... mmmmm ... potato chips
righto, it's been a while, so goes everything I've been musing over in the last few days. ***ELECTRONIC RENAISANCE*** It's BRILLIANT. One of my all time favourite B&S songs. People slag it off a lot, and I don't really know why. Sure, it's deritive, but in all honesty I think prety much all of "Tigermilk" is. Not in a bad way ... (it's my favourite B&S album), but it is definately an album which wears its influences on it's sleeve, whereas I think that on subsequent releases B&S have developed a very unique sound of their own. With "Tigermilk" you have your Smiths songs ('The State I Am In' and 'I Could Be Dreaming'), your Velvet Underground song ('You're Just a Baby' - surely the most UNDERRATED B&S song ever!), Love ('Expectations', 'She's Losing It') and the English Pastoral Folk-meets Simon and Garfunkel songs ('Mary Jo, 'We Rules the School'). And of course the New Order song - 'Electronic Renaisance'. Dont get me wrong though ... I'm not saying "Tigermilk" is pastiche. Far from it ... I think that, as a debut album it is a clear statement of intent. It's Stuart Murdoch saying "when I say 'nobody writes them like they used to so it may as well be me' - the this is what I mean!". And it works a charm. That was a little incoherent, on hindsight. Probably nobody but fellow New Zealander Ian Halliday will appreciate this, but the Member of Parliment with the eyepatch here made a joke in parliament yesterday about Nation Party MPs engaging in beastiality. It was a beautiful moment for New Zealand politics ...... Cheers Grant. ***NICK DRAKE AND EBAY*** I use eBay quite a lot, grudgingly. I really hate the whole idea of "bidding" for something, but picked up the entire Lilac Time back cataloge, super cheap, as well as an original Postcard LP od Josef K's "The Only Fun in Town", so I can't really complain. However, I come from a western country, where haggling is frowned upon, and have been bought up believing that the price on the tag is what you pay, no arguments. Anyway, I was looking at Nick Drake stuff there the other day, and saw some guy selling a Nick Drake CD-R of demos for US$55.00. He then had at the bottom of his ad "I have a few of these, so if you don't win, e-mail me". ie. I can make as many copies as I like and flog them off at $55 a piece. Anyway, something in me snapped. I don't usually like complaining, but I thought "this is exploitation!" and complained to eBay, because selling CD-Rs is against their rules. So they removed the ad. So some bastard in England somewhere will be cursing me for robbing him of untold riches of the back of Nick Drake fans. Which brings me to my next point .... ***BELLE & SEBASTIAN LIVE AT THE SUPPER CLUB, NYC*** I see this advertised on eBay quite a bit. I was under the impression that Jeepster normally contacted Ebay and sellers of bootlg items and had them removed. But this CD always seems to slip through the net. Does that mean it is an "official bootlg" or some sort of promo or something? Secondly, does anyone know where I could get one from? Reading between the lines, it looks like most of the ones being auctioned on eBay are CD-Rs, and I really object to people making a profit from merely duplicting their CD collection. Thus, if I'm going to spend money I want a "real one". If anyone could help me in this quest, I'd appreciate an e-mail off list. Thanks ...... ***FREAKS AND GEEKS*** Have we talked about this??? (I'm assuming it hasn't ben on in the UK?) American fans ... do you not think this is the most brilliant, realsitic look at college life ever? It is the complate opposite of Dawson's Creek and their ilk. The teenagers are actually liek teenagers. They are not "beautiful people" and they do not tak like 30=somethings with 10 years of intense therapy behind them. And "issues" don't get solved in an hour. it is brilliant brilliant brilliant. But I believe it was canned after one seasn. Am I right? (phew) Long one tonight. Goodnight kids .... and if anyone can help me with the Supper Club thing, please get in touch.
