Katie, dear, it literally means the 'Pastie' (an alcoholic beverage popular in France) of the upper-middle-class, but it really means just like, well, you know, the upper class scum stuff type thing.

Are you sure? I was under the impression that it was supposed to be a mishearing of "L'apathie de la bourgeoisie" meaning "The apathy of the middle classes". Anyone else?
