i am very grateful for the lengthy and detailed discussions upon "rock 'n' roll" and its relative proximity to heaven. however, i feel that certain arguments quickly became tied to an attempt to distinguish between rock and roll and pop. this, at least in my mind at the time of conception, was not the intended focus. i took it in its broader and more nebulous sense - music. the reason i say this is becase of its context; it is of course a lyric from Aztec Camera's "Somewhere in my Heart". i may be wrong, but i feel that the intensity and dynamism of this particular section of the song transcends the issue differentiation that was so eloquently, but perhaps wrongly, dwelt on. if indeed, music is to remembered as "little moments", i believe the value of the moment should be respected. i believe that during the moment when this particular lyric was penned, and then fused with the music, the moment was all-encompassing and universal, panoramic and devoid of judgement. in any way perhaps we should wonder why "this ain't the planet of sound" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . the beauty of email discussion is once you hit that send button, it's out of your jurisdiction and people will take it wherever they will... this is something i love with a passion :-)

it seems to me that we're arguing to the same end point around a nebulous phrase. i wholeheartedly put my hand in the air and plead 'guilty' to making distinctions in my own interpretation of my moments, and make the arbritrary choice of the word 'Pop' over 'rock'n'roll' simply because Vic Godard made such a strident point about it, and that someone like Lawrence also made the same choice. referential reverence... which is entirely Pop because Pop is obsessive, and is obsessively about the moment of transendence... it's always about reaching (back) to That Moment / That Feeling. Call it what you want... but i don't think that just saying 'music' is enough. 'music' is just the empty potential, because not all music makes me feel That Feeling. You need to make the distinction between that which does, and that which does not. You might, as Kevin Pearce has said, say simply 'Great' or 'Not Great', but i don;t think that's expressive enough. I choose the word Pop because i feel it annoys enough people, and because it sounds right! :-) are we through yet? the duke -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . "this ain't no fuckin' around!" I have listened to the Pixies for most of the 12 hours I spent driving this weekend up to Manchester and back again. I love them. Whoever was asking about Let's Go Out, it was indeed by The Very Things who, as someone else said, did indeed do This Is Motortown which was ace and also Mummy You're A Wreck which is scary. I bought the Cornershop album the other day, it is graet too! I'm bluudy graet! And two marmoite sandwiches please!
