Ah, the heady BritPop summer of '95. Happy days! oh, how i remember that magical summer of 95,, I had just turned 18 and was going to London for the first time- the city of Britpop( the wonder of it all). Imagine my delight when I arrived and I thought to myself ' I'm in the same city as Jarvis Cocker' coming from a hillbilly country like Iceland where there are no big stars to daydream about, it was like magic! Being an all britpopper at the time, I myself too liked menswe@r and this beautyfull list has made me come to terms with it,there was a time whenI felt slightly embarresed about it, but i remember one actually good song- it's called I'll manage somehow... I was too a Gene fan, and I dont know what to think about that now, should I be embarresed too or should I show off my three cd's I got with them? I was watching bbc prime the other day and I saw a show called Britpop now- remember? it was in the blome of britpop and had: Blur(in school uniforms singing country house), Echobelly, Sleeper(oh
they still exist), Elastica,Menswear and Supergrass,,, it took me back,,, some bands did come out of that area ok, and are still live and kicking and I dont mean to trash any of them. But now I'm (almost) 21 and I look back to those days with a bit nostalgic mind I must say. Being on this list is not only entertaining, it's educative too, I'm learning all these new words and learning the names of bands I would really like to listen to, but it's no chance of me purchasing the cd's here( in the fasist state I live in) but there will be a fest next time I go abroud, and what books to read-although they are all in english and I dont find it fasanating enough to read a whole book in english without getting a grade for it,,, but I'll wait till they are translated.. on B&S content....ummm no I cant think of a thing.. I like them, did I mention that...? Could somebody pass Begbies homepage address to me, I've been to Sarahs and I want to judge which is better ...................................................................... ..............................................................olla ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . That summer was a defining time in my life. I'd started University a year earlier, a reader of Q and a listener of Virgin 1215 -- an old fart before my time! However, in my first term, I fell in love with a girl who was a total indie-kid, which probably accelerated the change in my music taste. By the end of the year, I was an Oasis-T-Shirt wearing, NME-worshipping stereotype! My summer was spent going to see Oasis at Irvine Beach, T in the Park and Reading. I saw more live bands that summer than I have done in the rest of my life[1]! I was in record shops every week snapping up the 7"s that the papers were recommending. The week of the "Battle of the Britpop", I was in Belfast, relaxing in the sun with afore-mentioned girl. She got annoyed, though, because I bought Oasis and Blur, but not The Charlatans who were released the same week! It *was* a generation-defining moment, no matter what your opinions now of those bands involved.

I've still got that show on tape. It also features the woe-fully underrated Powder with their hit-single "Aphrodisiac", which won brownie points just for mentioning the kids TV show "Crackerjack" (see also "Jackanory" in Country House)

Sleeper are rumoured to be no more. According to "those" in the "know" on uk.music.alternative, Ms Wener is now a solo artiste. The band wanted to split a while back, but decided (read: were forced) to stay together for the tour. Other rumours: Elastica have decided that everything they've recorded over the last year is shite (including the stuff recorded with Mark E Smith), and have wiped the tapes. Booo! Elastica at TitP'95 was one of the best concerts of my life.

Me too! It's strange, but all I remember from that summer is hot sunny days, listening to great music, and metamorphising from the geek of old, to the geek of new!

Erm.... me neither... erm... I listened to If You're Feeling Sinister this morning, in the shower.

http://www.begbie.com Today's useful tip: Always check that the washing machine has completely drained of water before opening the door. Rod. [1] At that point, I'd been to five concerts - Danny Wilson, Tanita Tikaram, Teenage Fanclub, The Boo Radleys and... The Senseless Things. Ah, the heady BritPop summer of '95. Happy days!
Oh yes, I remember that summer well... (I'd love to be able to write the rest of this in sepia, but it's a bit difficult on email... oh well, you'll just have to imagine it...). I'd just finished school, waiting anxiously for exam results to see if I'd got into Uni, lazy sunny days, working in the local McDonalds. Oh dear, it doesn't seem quite so romantic any more.
However, in my first term, I fell in love with a girl who was a total indie-kid, which probably accelerated the change in my music taste. By the end of the year, I was an Oasis-T-Shirt wearing, NME-worshipping stereotype!
I really got into indie music purely thanks to the Radcliffe graveyard shift show. I remember listening to the first ever show he did on Radio 1 (and even a few of the shows he did on Radio 5 on Wednesday evenings - Hit The North I think they were called) and thinking, yeah, it's really funny, shame about the music. This was in a period of my life when my taste wasn't very developed (Confession time: forget Menswear, anyone remember the London Boys?!?) and Radcliffe's music seemed too obscure. But as time went on, and I listened more and more, I came to love the music as much as the comedy, and I haven't looked back since. The man is indeed a genius. And that's where I first heard B&S... By the way, the other DJ that has been mentioned recently is Chris Moyles; and guess who is sitting in for Mark and Lard in the afternoon slot for the next 2 weeks while they're on holiday...
The week of the "Battle of the Britpop", I was in Belfast, relaxing in the sun with afore-mentioned girl. She got annoyed, though, because I bought Oasis and Blur, but not The Charlatans who were released the same week!
I still remember the day of the denoument, the Sunday afternoon when the chart was announced and we found out who had won. I wasn't anywhere near a radio at the time, I was walking across a field carrying a sleeping bag and some alcohol on my way to meet a friend to go with him to a party ('cos he had a car). After waiting outside his house for about an hour, wondering who was number 1, I gave up and went home - it turned out I'd got the time wrong and I should have been there an hour earlier. So I missed the party, and still didn't find out until the next day what had happened. On a completely different (and almost entirely irrelevant) note, has anyone out there seen Acetone live? They're described in this month's Select as an "American Belle and Sebastian", and they're supporting Spiritualised here on Saturday; is it worth turning up early for them?
