Only English men look good in pink shirts. A former professor of mine even had a lavender shirt - and the color was so rich, it looked sateen. And it suited him well. But it must put women in a strange position, having to dress better than them or else being made to feel unfeminine. When I was an undergraduate, the campus association of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals gave a talk in our dorm. Later on I saw one of the speakers on campus wearing a black shirt with white polka dots. (I remember him because I asked him an overly earnest question about how being gay affected his relationship with women. Somehow, I believed that being gay would carry a man's relationship with women to dizzy platonic heights...) And he looked nice. Not everybody could pull it off. The Great Gatsby had a lot of nice shirts so maybe he was gay and that's the real reason Daisy cried at the sight of them. I said some mean things to my sister on the phone, so I feel bad. I wish we were kids again. I didn't mean to be mean, but I had to explain. Sometimes I wish there were more space between sticking up for yourself and hurting other people. But she doesn't react anymore to anything I say: not directly, not to me. So how can we still be close? No. I don't mean that. She's a materialistic slob. She takes over everything around her. And she took our (not incl. her in 'our'; it's too bad he's so friendly; otherwise, he might bark at her to make her go away) dog for a walk and nearly killed him (she told me he could barely walk and that he threw up when he came home), the walk of course being really for her benefit. I wonder if "Chalet Lines" will be an angry song or a sad song. (Please don't tell me though.) I imagine Stuart to have white heat/silent treatment kind of anger. That's the most cutting.
