Sinister: i hate coming up with a subject every time
hey again. i'm on a couple of other lists and it seems that every day, someone is recommending another band. i've noticed that i've heard no recommendations from this list (since i've been on it at least). now, i know we can't all be listening to nothing but belle and sebastian, so what is everyone out there listening to? i'll start off with a recommendation of my own. now, i know a lot of you are tindersticks fans as well. well, i have another band. lambchop. they are i guess what the tindersticks would be if they grew up in tennessee and were raised on country music. there's about 11 or 12 members in the band, everything ranging from tuba to "open-ended wrenches"? if you like the tindersticks, you'll like lambchop. almost guaranteed. that's my recommendation. they have a new album out "thriller" but i haven't got my hands on it yet. but i recommend "jack's tulips / i hope you're sitting down" their first album. bye. -brad ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . i've had Thriller for about a month now and i've played it a fair amount. i like it... i like the 10" they did a while back as well. They are peculiar, have an odd axis that appeals, and hey, i like country music anyway, largely speaking. Um, anyway Thriller is worth investigating, not least because we have songs on there by FM Cornog, who, the eager eyed amongst you will realize, is the sometime genius behind the very fine East River Pipe. Other recommendations: just picked up the Photek LP and you'd probably hate it but i think it's rather fine. Also imagine my amazement to see 'Circles' by Alex F at #20 in the UK singles charts! Only a couple of years late... sigh. What next, Bukem on TOTP? Barbles on about drum'n'bass for too long, therebay getting all the lists hackles up (except Alex! Respect to him... and anyone else who i'm blanketing). Kerouac's beckoning with open arms... that's my B&S reference :-) the duke -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Alex F....did I read somewhere that he's Alvin Stardust's son? Or am I "on one", as they used to say?
I haven't heard Mister Photek's album. Needless to say it's unavailable here...I have bought some compilations, but sadly I've no idea whether they're any good or not. I have the same trouble with jazz. I need a jazz'n'jungle Yoda to show me the way. I bought the Chemical Brothers album when it came out on the strength of the "bringing the sixties up to date" hype. At first I didn't like it ever so much, but it's grown on me a lot. And I do like that bloke with the long hair. Blimey! I've just looked through my extensive drum'n'bass collection and lo! Photek - Rings Around Saturn. You can tell I don't listen to it much. Another reason I don't know whether it's any good or not is because it's got Everything But The Girl on it, and I don't know how they rate on the coolometer these days. I used have quite a fixation on them at first. I think I was thinking of Adam F earlier on. So anyway, the point is a lot of people don't dig techno rubbish and so onn because it's like a foreign language. But like a foreign language, time and patience works wonders. And an inexhaustible bank account helps too. The one I like best on this CD is Dillinja - The Angels Fell. My puny stereo can't cope with the monolithic bass. For the first time since the weekend's Belle fest in Barcelona, I'm feeling quite comfortable at home, so please forgive my endless ramblings off topic. Off topic for now, that is. Nobody knows what's round the corner for B&S.... Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . This message was brought to you by the Sinister mailing list. . Yes I love Lambchop too, but I CAN'T GET THRILLER ANYWHERE! I will look properly on Saturday - by the way is it a remake of Mr Jackson's LP? Now I'd love the hear that done by Lambchop... :) Other than that I'm with duke on the "what else are we listening to" thread - I bet we find a huge variation of seemingly unrelated stuff, along with the Tindersticks and Arab Straps. I'm suffering from post-Summer "oh my God there are too many good albums being released" adrenaline-rush just now. I was, for instance, pretty taken by the first half of Cornershop's new LP this morning in the car: "When I Was Born For The 7th Time" - not just because the second track reminded me of my girlfriend's little squirrel-kicking cousin (Asha). Best happy British/Indian indie/hip-hop I've heard all day :) Anyone here Earthling's wonderful LP "Nefisa" - well it's like a distant friendlier cousin - with a sitar. So far.. New Stereolab's already been mentioned... new DJ Krush is a bit tasty, and, I'm sorry, I can't get over Bjork's "Homogenic" just now. Just slag me off in private.. This isn't very helpful is it, particularly if I add that I have trouble not listening to: Nick Cave, John Coltrane, Mouse On Mars, The Fall, Bill Evans, MBV, Lee Perry, Stina Nordenstam, DJ Shadow, Culture, Digable Planets, Serge Gainsbourg, Shellyan Orphan and (swoon) Disco Inferno for any extended period of time. None of this seems in anyway related to B&S. Phew, got away without mentioning Nick Drake. Paul ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
